Exploring Kochi's Natural Beauty

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the natural wonders of Kochi. From cascading waterfalls to sprawling karst landscapes, Shikoku Island continues to surprise and delight us with its diverse beauty. It’s moments like these that remind me why Hans and I crave these adventures, a world away from our cozy Bonn apartment.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop. It's a family restaurant, and it was just the ticket to fuel up for a day of exploring. I had a traditional Japanese set meal – rice, miso soup, and grilled fish – simple and satisfying. Hans opted for something a bit more adventurous, a local recommendation from the friendly staff. The restaurant was bustling with locals, families chatting, and friends catching up. It was a comforting start, a bit like the familiar warmth of family meals back in Anse Boileau.

With our bellies full, we set off to Todoroki Falls. The drive itself was scenic, winding through lush greenery that reminded me of the vibrant plant life of Seychelles. Upon arriving, we embarked on a leisurely hike, the air thick with humidity and the scent of damp earth. The trail meandered alongside a series of smaller waterfalls, collectively known as the 99 Todoroki Falls. Each one had its own unique charm, the water cascading over moss-covered rocks, creating a symphony of soothing sounds. The hike to the main falls was about 1.5 kilometers, a manageable distance that allowed us to soak in the tranquil atmosphere.

Finally, we reached Todoroki Falls, Shikoku's largest waterfall and one of Japan's top 100. The sight was simply breathtaking. The water plunged down from a height of 58 meters, creating a misty spray that kissed our faces. We stood there for a while, mesmerized by the power and beauty of nature. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the forces greater than ourselves.

After taking in the falls, we continued our journey to Shikoku Karst. This unique geological formation, straddling the border between Ehime and Kochi prefectures, is one of Japan's three major karst landscapes. As we ascended, the scenery transformed dramatically. The lush greenery gave way to rolling grasslands dotted with white limestone formations. It felt like we had entered another world.

The Shikoku Karst stretches for 25 kilometers, with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 meters. We drove along Route 383, also known as the “Road in the Sky,” and it certainly lived up to its name. The views were panoramic, with the Pacific Ocean glistening to the south and the jagged peaks of the Ishizuchi Mountain range to the north. We stopped at Tengu Kogen, the highest point of the karst, and took in the 360-degree vista. It was a moment of pure awe, the vastness of the landscape stretching out before us.

We learned that in the summer, the hills are carpeted in green grass, and in the autumn, pampas grass flowers. From spring to autumn, cows graze the slopes, creating a pastoral scene. We spotted a few grazing cows, adding to the idyllic charm of the place. It felt like a scene from a painting, the white limestone contrasting against the green grass and blue sky.

For lunch, we stopped at Hakkenden Nankoku Osone, a restaurant that serves authentic charcoal-grilled yakitori. It had a retro Showa atmosphere, which I found quite charming. We sat at the counter and watched the chef expertly grill the skewers, the aroma of smoky meat filling the air. The yakitori was delicious, the chicken tender and flavorful, the sauce perfectly balanced. It was a delightful culinary experience, a taste of local flavors that we won't soon forget. Hans, ever the adventurous eater, tried a few different types of yakitori, while I stuck to the classic chicken and vegetable skewers.

In the late afternoon, we made a quick stop at Plugs Market Kochi Store. It's a gift shop located in the Da丸 Kochi department store, and I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs. I was able to find some small trinkets. I picked up a few small gifts for my friends back in Bonn.

For dinner, we decided on Restaurant&Cafe Riina. It was a cozy spot, with a relaxed atmosphere and a menu that offered a variety of dishes. I opted for a light salad, while Hans chose a hearty burger. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and attentive. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring.

As we drove back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the cascading waters of Todoroki Falls to the surreal landscapes of Shikoku Karst, Kochi had truly captivated us with its natural beauty. It was a day of immersion, a day of connection, a day of pure joy. I’m so glad that Hans and I decided to come to Shikoku Island, and I look forward to seeing what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we are off to Kurushima Strait Observatory and Aji Ryuozan Park. I am excited to see more of what Shikoku Island has to offer!

Back at our Ryokan, I was just thinking about how much I miss the laid-back island lifestyle of Seychelles. I miss the warmth of my family, the taste of Creole cuisine, and the sound of the ocean. But then I look at Hans, my travel partner and my rock, and I know that I am exactly where I am supposed to be. We are creating our own adventures, forging our own path, and discovering the beauty of the world together. And that, my friends, is a feeling worth cherishing.
