Whimsical Adventures and Timeless Traditions

Today was a delightful mix of childhood nostalgia and deep cultural immersion. It’s amazing how a single day can offer such a rich tapestry of experiences, from the playful world of Anpanman to the solemn echoes of ancient samurai history. Hans and I embarked on a journey that touched both our hearts and minds, reminding us of the simple joys and profound stories that make Shikoku Island so special.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Dining Room Hibari. This restaurant is renowned for its generous portions and delicious local cuisine. I decided to try their famous tonkatsu donburi, a pork cutlet rice bowl, while Hans opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set. The food was hearty and flavorful, providing the perfect fuel for our day of exploration. It reminded me of the comforting meals my grandmother used to make back in Anse Boileau – simple, honest, and full of love.

With our bellies full, we set off to Kami City to visit the Kami City Takashi Yanase Memorial Hall & Anpanman Museum. As someone who grew up on a small island, the vibrant world of Anpanman was not part of my childhood. However, since moving to Germany, I’ve come to appreciate the universal appeal of such stories, especially their ability to bring joy to children and adults alike. The museum is dedicated to Takashi Yanase, the creator of Anpanman, and is located in his hometown. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by colorful displays and cheerful music.

The museum itself is a treasure trove of Anpanman memorabilia, featuring original drawings, dioramas, and interactive exhibits. I was particularly impressed by the Yanase Takashi Gallery on the fourth floor, which showcased a wide variety of images from the world of Anpanman. Hans, with his technical mind, was fascinated by the intricate details of the dioramas recreating the streetscapes of Anpanman's town. We wandered through the exhibits, discovering hidden Anpanman characters and learning about the values of kindness, courage, and helping others that are central to the Anpanman series.

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”

What struck me most was the sense of community and warmth that permeated the museum. Families laughed together, children’s eyes sparkled with excitement, and even Hans, usually reserved, couldn't help but smile. It was a heartwarming experience that transcended language and cultural barriers. It reminded me of the simple joys of childhood and the importance of cherishing those moments.

After immersing ourselves in the whimsical world of Anpanman, we drove to the Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore. This museum offered a stark contrast to the lightheartedness of the Anpanman Museum, providing a glimpse into the history and culture of the Heike clan. The Heike Yashiki Folk Museum is designated as a tangible cultural property of Miyoshi City. The thatched-roof main house and storehouse, built in 1867, have been preserved in their original state. The house belongs to the descendants Naiki Horikawa, who traveled into Iya with the fugitive Heike, and it is said that he was the personal doctor of the young Emperor Antoku who was brought to Iya to hide.

Located on a mountainside, the museum offered stunning views of the Oboke Gorge and the surrounding mountains. The traditional architecture of the house, with its thatched roof and ancient wooden beams, was a sight to behold. Inside, we explored a collection of antiques and relics, each telling a story of the Heike clan's rise and fall. The museum is a fine example of a stately traditional home and a great place for those who are interested in learning about Iya's history.

I found myself particularly drawn to the irori floor hearth, where a fire is lit daily. Sitting around this traditional fire pit, I could almost feel the presence of the Iya people who once lived here. Hans, ever the history buff, was captivated by the ancient documents and artifacts on display, piecing together the story of the Heike clan and their escape to the Iya Valley. As we left the museum, I couldn't help but reflect on the parallels between the Heike clan's story and my own journey from the Seychelles to Germany. Both involve leaving behind a familiar world and adapting to a new culture, carrying with us the memories and traditions of our past.

Before dinner, we stopped by Suehiro Shopping Center. This local shopping center offered a glimpse into the daily lives of the people of Kochi. We wandered through the aisles, browsing the fresh produce, local snacks, and artisanal products. I picked up a few souvenirs for my family back home, including some unique sauces and regional snacks. It reminded me of the bustling markets in Victoria, where I used to shop with my mother. This shopping center caters to commuters and travelers in the city.

For dinner, we decided to try Tataki Kobo, a restaurant specializing in katsuo tataki, a local delicacy. The restaurant had an inviting atmosphere, and the staff were eager to share their knowledge of the dishes they served. We ordered the signature katsuo tataki, which was prepared using traditional straw-roasting methods. The seared bonito was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the smoky aroma of the straw added a unique touch. Hans, who is always up for trying new things, declared it one of the best meals he’s had in Japan.

As we savored our meal, we discussed our plans for tomorrow. We’ll be heading to the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge and the Hinoji Valley - Iya River Bend Observation Point. I’m particularly excited about visiting the vine bridge, as I’ve heard it’s a thrilling and unforgettable experience. Hans is looking forward to capturing the stunning views from the observation point. Before that, we'll have breakfast at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop, and lunch at Tosa Rokkon. We might even grab a drink at tone dining bar in the evening.

Today was a reminder of the beauty and diversity of Shikoku Island. From the playful world of Anpanman to the solemn echoes of ancient samurai history, we experienced a range of emotions and sensations. As I reflect on the day, I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Hans and to connect with the people and culture of Japan. It’s moments like these that make travel so rewarding and that create memories that will last a lifetime. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll introduce Anpanman to the children in my English class in Bonn!

Tomorrow promises more adventure and discovery, and I can’t wait to see what awaits us in the heart of Iya Valley.
