Exploring Matsuyama's Timeless Charms

Today was a delightful blend of history, relaxation, and local culture in Matsuyama. From the heights of Matsuyama Castle to the soothing waters of Dogo Onsen, every moment was a new discovery. I'm so excited to share our experiences with you!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ombelico. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Hans enjoyed a Western-style omelet. It was the perfect fuel for our morning adventure to Matsuyama Castle.

We decided to take the ropeway up to Matsuyama Castle. The ascent was smooth, and the views of the city sprawling beneath us were simply breathtaking. As we climbed, I couldn't help but reflect on the castle's history. Built in the early 17th century by Katō Yoshiaki, it has stood the test of time, witnessing countless events and guarding the city for centuries. Reaching the top, we explored the castle grounds, marveling at the intricate architecture and the strategic design. The main keep, rebuilt in 1820 after a lightning strike destroyed the original, is an impressive sight. Inside, we found exhibits detailing the castle's history, complete with samurai armor and ancient blueprints. The panoramic views from the top were stunning, offering a 360-degree vista of Matsuyama and the Seto Inland Sea. I could almost imagine what it must have been like to be a feudal lord surveying his domain from this very spot.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After descending from the castle, we strolled through Minami-Shinmachi Shopping Street. This bustling arcade offered a vibrant mix of shops selling everything from local crafts to delicious snacks. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs, including a beautiful hand-painted fan and some local sweets. The energy of the street was infectious, and it was a joy to see locals and tourists alike enjoying the atmosphere.

For lunch, we stopped at Eki-mae Shokudo, a charming eatery known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. I savored a bowl of udon noodles with tempura, while Hans opted for a set meal with grilled fish and rice. The flavors were simple yet satisfying, highlighting the freshness of the local ingredients. It was a perfect, comforting meal that gave us a true taste of Matsuyama.

In the afternoon, we made our way to Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest and most famous hot springs. The main building, a stunning wooden structure with a rich history, is said to have inspired the bathhouse in Studio Ghibli's film *Spirited Away*. As we approached, I could feel a sense of excitement and anticipation building within me. Before entering, I made sure to review the onsen etiquette. It's important to cleanse yourself thoroughly before entering the baths, and of course, no swimsuits are allowed. I gathered my small towel and headed into the women's bath, while Hans went to the men's side. The atmosphere was serene and calming, with the gentle sound of water and the soft scent of minerals filling the air. Stepping into the hot spring water was like entering another world. The heat enveloped me, easing every ache and tension in my muscles. I closed my eyes and simply let myself relax, feeling the centuries of history and tradition surrounding me. The waters of Dogo Onsen are known for their therapeutic properties, and I could certainly feel them working their magic. It was an incredibly rejuvenating experience, leaving me feeling refreshed and renewed.

After our onsen experience, we met up and wandered through the Dogo Onsen shopping street. It was lively with people in yukata, and we picked up some treats before heading back to freshen up for dinner. For dinner, we decided on Hattorikun, a local restaurant known for its delicious cuisine. We enjoyed a variety of dishes, including fresh seafood and local delicacies. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration and relaxation.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Shikoku Village and the Otsuka Museum of Art []. I'm particularly excited about the museum, as I've heard it houses an impressive collection of Western art. For dinner, we're planning to try Yoronotaki Gomenten, and perhaps stop by BAR OOKUNI for a nightcap. I can't wait to see what new adventures tomorrow brings! Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the chance to immerse myself in new cultures, explore historical sites, and discover hidden gems. Matsuyama has truly captured my heart, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity to experience its timeless charms with Hans. Good night from Shikoku!
