Exploring the Untouched Beauty of Masoala National Park
Day 10: A Sunday Stroll Through Masoala: Discovering Local Treasures and Tastes
Immerse yourself in Masoala's vibrant culture with a visit to local parks, a taste of Malagasy cuisine, and a shopping adventure.
Discovering Masoala's Heartbeat
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to soak in the local atmosphere of Masoala beyond the rainforest's edge. Jean-Pierre and I decided to venture out, not with a strict agenda, but with open hearts and curious minds, ready to embrace whatever the day offered. It turned out to be a delightful mix of nature, culture, and culinary delights, painting a vivid picture of life in this corner of Madagascar.
Our day began, as usual, with a lovely breakfast at Masoala Forest Lodge. Sipping on strong Malagasy coffee while overlooking the lush greenery, I felt a sense of anticipation for the adventures that awaited. The lodge itself is such a haven, nestled perfectly into the landscape. It's hard to believe it was built over two decades by adventurers; it blends so seamlessly with its surroundings.

With our bellies full and spirits high, Jean-Pierre and I set off to explore Ambalatelo parc. It wasn't a challenging hike, but a pleasant walk through a landscape dotted with local flora and fauna. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me as we strolled hand-in-hand, the sounds of nature our only companions. It reminded me of the local parks back in Montreal, but with a distinctly Malagasy twist.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
Next on our list was Tany Luc. While different from Ambalatelo, it offered its own unique charm. I found myself reflecting on the importance of preserving these natural spaces, not just for the sake of biodiversity, but for the well-being of the local communities who depend on them. It's a cause close to my heart, and one I hope to continue supporting through my blog and travels.

By lunchtime, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we headed to Aero Pizza in Maroantsetra. I know, pizza might seem like an unusual choice in Madagascar, but I had heard great things about this place. Plus, after days of mostly rice and local dishes (which I adore, don't get me wrong), Jean-Pierre was craving something a little different. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! The crust was perfectly crispy, the toppings were fresh, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. It was a delicious and unexpected taste of home, mixed with the unique flavors of Madagascar. It was a welcome change, and Jean-Pierre was in heaven.

After lunch, we decided to do some shopping at Tranombarotra Goulamhoussen Maroantsetra. I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home, something that would remind me of our time in Masoala. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, textiles, and other goods. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven scarf and a small wooden carving of a lemur, the iconic symbol of Madagascar. Supporting local artisans is so important, and I was happy to contribute to the local economy.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Albert et Lily for dinner. This charming restaurant is known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious Malagasy cuisine. We savored every bite, reminiscing about the day's adventures and feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and warmth of Masoala. The food was incredible, a true celebration of local flavors and ingredients.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Plantation vanille sous bambou and Andemby. I am particularly excited about the vanilla plantation, as Madagascar is famous for its high-quality vanilla. I'm eager to learn more about the cultivation process and, of course, to sample some of the delicious vanilla-infused treats. Andemby, I've heard, is another gem, offering more opportunities to connect with nature and the local culture.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post under the soft glow of our lantern, I can't help but smile. Today was a perfect example of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, but about immersing yourself in the local culture, connecting with the people, and discovering hidden gems along the way. Masoala, you have captured my heart!
Even though I miss Miarinarivo, where I grew up, and Montreal, where I live now, every day here feels like coming home. I am so happy to share this journey with Jean-Pierre, and with all of you. I am so grateful for the chance to experience the untouched beauty of Masoala National Park.
And to anyone considering a trip to Madagascar, I say, do it! Come with an open mind and a sense of adventure, and you will be rewarded with an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.
I should also remember to charge my portable solar charger because I forgot to pack it. I also wish I had a waterproof backpack cover, since it rains a lot here.
Bonne nuit, everyone!
