A Fond Farewell to Snaefellsnes

As our journey through the enchanting Snaefellsnes Peninsula draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. Today, our final day, was a blend of literary pilgrimage, geological wonder, and culinary indulgence, a perfect encapsulation of Iceland's multifaceted charm. It’s hard to believe our nine-day adventure with Jean-Pierre is already coming to an end.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Hlaðan Veitingahús. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly baked bread and local delicacies were the perfect start to our last day on the peninsula. I opted for the traditional Icelandic skyr with berries, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a hearty lamb burger. It was a delightful way to fuel up before embarking on our final explorations.

Our first stop was the Jules Verne monument near Arnarstapi. As a lover of classic literature, I was excited to pay homage to the author who so vividly captured Iceland's mystique in Journey to the Center of the Earth. The monument itself is a simple signpost, but its significance is profound. Standing there, with the wind whipping around us, I could almost feel the echoes of Professor Lidenbrock's adventurous spirit.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

The monument, though unassuming, sparked a sense of wonder and adventure within me. It was a reminder that even the most fantastical journeys often begin with a simple idea, a spark of curiosity. It also made me reflect on how much Iceland itself feels like stepping into the pages of a Jules Verne novel, a land where the earth's raw power is palpable and the landscapes are nothing short of otherworldly. Jean-Pierre, ever the pragmatist, chuckled at my literary musings but couldn't deny the allure of the landscape. It's easy to see why Verne was inspired, he admitted, snapping a few photos of the monument against the backdrop of the dramatic coastline.

Next, we ventured towards the Lava Rocks Formations. The rugged coastline was a sight to behold. The formations, sculpted by centuries of volcanic activity and relentless waves, stood as silent sentinels against the crashing surf. We spent hours exploring the jagged cliffs and hidden coves, marveling at nature's artistry. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of salt and seaweed. I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me, a feeling of being utterly present in the moment.

As we wandered through the lava formations, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey that had brought us here. From the moment we touched down in Reykjavik, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula had cast its spell on us. We had traversed black sand beaches, hiked through moss-covered lava fields, and stood in awe before towering waterfalls. We had tasted traditional Icelandic cuisine, met friendly locals, and learned about the rich history and folklore of this captivating land.

For lunch, we stopped at Hótel Snaefellsnes. I opted for the catch of the day, a perfectly grilled cod served with roasted vegetables. Jean-Pierre chose the hearty fish soup, declaring it the best he'd had on the entire trip. The restaurant's cozy ambiance and panoramic views of the harbor made for a truly memorable dining experience. It was a perfect interlude, allowing us to savor not just the food but the stunning scenery that surrounded us.

In the late afternoon, we decided to indulge in a bit of local culture at Skipper Restaurant. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with locals and tourists mingling over drinks and conversation. Jean-Pierre, a connoisseur of craft beers, sampled a few local brews, while I sipped on a glass of Icelandic schnapps. We shared stories with fellow travelers, swapping tips and recommendations for our next adventures. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places but also about connecting with people from all walks of life.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the peninsula, we made our way to Bjarnarhöfn Bistro for our farewell dinner. The bistro, known for its traditional Icelandic shark cuisine, was a fitting choice for our last meal. I hesitated at first, unsure about trying fermented shark, but Jean-Pierre encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. When in Iceland, he said with a grin, do as the Icelanders do.

I took a deep breath and sampled the hákarl, the infamous fermented shark. The taste was… unique, to say the least. It had a pungent, ammonia-rich flavor that lingered on the palate. I won't pretend that I loved it, but I appreciated the experience. It was a reminder that travel is about embracing the unfamiliar, even if it challenges our preconceived notions.

After the shark tasting, we indulged in more palatable dishes. I savored a delicious fish soup, while Jean-Pierre devoured a hearty portion of lamb chops. The bistro's warm and inviting atmosphere and the friendly service made for a memorable final meal. As we raised our glasses in a toast to Iceland, I felt a pang of sadness knowing that our adventure was coming to an end. But I also felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared.

As we prepare to leave Snaefellsnes tomorrow, I know that this journey will stay with me long after we return to Montreal. The dramatic landscapes, the rich culture, and the warm hospitality of the Icelandic people have left an indelible mark on my soul. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a transformative experience that has broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for the beauty and wonder of our world.

Reflecting on our commitment to sustainable travel, I am proud of the choices we made throughout this trip. From supporting local businesses to minimizing our environmental impact, we strived to be responsible travelers. I hope that our journey has inspired others to explore the world with a sense of curiosity and respect for the planet.

As I write this, I can hear the wind howling outside our cozy guesthouse. It's a fitting soundtrack to our farewell to Snaefellsnes. Tomorrow, we'll begin our journey back to Reykjavik, carrying with us a treasure trove of memories and a renewed appreciation for the wild beauty of Iceland. While I am eager to return to Montreal, I know that a part of me will forever remain in this magical land of fire and ice.

Perhaps it's the Malagasy blood in me, always yearning for the open road and the thrill of discovery, but I already find myself dreaming of our next adventure. Until then, Iceland, bless.

It's time to say goodbye to the land of fire and ice, a place that has captured my heart with its raw beauty and captivating spirit. Though our journey ends, the memories and lessons learned will forever be etched in my mind. This trip was more than just a vacation; it was a pilgrimage to the heart of nature's grandeur, a testament to the power of exploration, and a celebration of the human spirit. I'm already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever it may lead.

Thank you, Snaefellsnes, for the memories. À bientôt!
