A Day of Discovery in Seydisfjordur
Today was all about embracing the raw beauty and quaint charm of Seydisfjordur. From chasing waterfalls to soaking in the local culture, it was a day that perfectly captured the essence of this Icelandic gem. It’s days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the magic of discovering new places, one adventure at a time.
My day began, as most days here do, with a hearty breakfast at Hótel Snæfell. Fuelling up with some traditional Icelandic fare, I was eager to set out and explore. The weather was playing its usual game of peek-a-boo, with the sun occasionally breaking through the clouds, promising a day full of photographic opportunities.

First on the agenda was the majestic Gufu waterfall. The drive there was stunning, with the road winding along the fjord, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. I have to admit, I nearly forgot my sunglasses again, luckily I remembered just in time. As I approached the waterfall, the sheer power of nature was palpable. The water cascaded down with a thunderous roar, creating a misty spray that kissed my face. I took my time to hike around the area, capturing the scene from different angles. It’s moments like these that make me feel so connected to the earth, a feeling that’s hard to come by in the bustling city of Montreal. It reminded me of the waterfalls back home in Madagascar, but with a uniquely Icelandic twist.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are found just beyond the beaten path.
Next, I headed back into town to visit the Seydisfjordur Information Centre. I wanted to gather some insights about local events and hidden gems that might not be on the typical tourist trail. The staff were incredibly helpful, providing me with maps and insider tips. I learned about a local art exhibition happening later in the week and a hidden hiking trail that promised even more stunning views. It’s these interactions with locals that truly enrich the travel experience, offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of a place. I also grabbed a few postcards to send to Jean-Pierre, who I know would appreciate a little piece of Iceland back home.

After the information center, I decided to take a leisurely stroll around the Seyðisfjörður Marina. The marina was a hive of activity, with fishing boats coming and going, and the colorful houses lining the waterfront creating a picture-perfect scene. I watched as some kayakers paddled through the calm waters, their silhouettes framed against the backdrop of the mountains. It was a scene that felt both timeless and uniquely Icelandic.

For lunch, I ventured to Vi∂ Lónið guesthouse, a charming spot known for its traditional Icelandic cuisine. I savored a delicious lamb stew, which was the perfect comfort food on a slightly chilly day. As I ate, I struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler from Germany, who was equally captivated by the beauty of Seydisfjordur. We shared stories and travel tips, bonding over our shared love for exploration.

In the late afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of local culture at Skaftfell Bistro. This cozy spot is known for its vibrant atmosphere and connection to the local art scene. As I sipped on a locally brewed beer, I admired the artwork on display, each piece telling a story of Icelandic life and creativity. The bistro was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. It reminded me of the cafes in Montreal, where art and community come together in a beautiful way.

As evening approached, I found myself reflecting on the day’s adventures. Seydisfjordur had truly captured my heart with its stunning natural beauty and vibrant cultural scene. From the thundering Gufu waterfall to the charming Seyðisfjörður Marina, every moment had been a feast for the senses.
For dinner, I decided to try Tvísöngur, a restaurant recommended by one of the locals I met at the Information Centre. It was a bit of a drive, but the promise of authentic Icelandic cuisine was too tempting to resist. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, rustic ambiance. I ordered the Arctic char, a local specialty, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a true taste of Iceland.

After dinner, I couldn't resist a final stop at Skaftfell Bistro for another locally brewed beer. The atmosphere was even more lively than before, with live music filling the air. I chatted with some locals about the upcoming LungA Art Festival, which I'm now determined to experience if I can extend my stay. It sounds like an incredible celebration of art and community, something that resonates deeply with me.
As I walked back to Hótel Snæfell, the stars began to emerge, twinkling in the clear Icelandic sky. I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a magical place. Seydisfjordur had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Seyðisfjörður itself, taking in the colorful streets and perhaps finding some unique souvenirs. I'm particularly interested in visiting Steinholt & Co., a shop I heard about that sells locally made crafts. I also want to try Borgarholl for lunch, another local recommendation. And of course, I'll be back at Hótel Snæfell for breakfast to start the day right. I’m excited to see what new adventures tomorrow will bring. Until then, goodnight from Seydisfjordur!
This trip has been a wonderful reminder of the beauty and simplicity of solo travel. It’s given me the space to reflect, recharge, and reconnect with my passion for exploration. And who knows, maybe Jean-Pierre will join me on my next adventure! Until then, I’ll continue to share my experiences and inspire others to embark on their own journeys of discovery.
