Echoes of Ancient Kyoto

Today in Kyoto was a journey through time, a blend of the ancient and the modern that only this city can offer. From the serene halls of Sanjusangendo to the towering heights of Kyoto Tower, I experienced a day filled with cultural immersion and breathtaking views. It was a day of contrasts, a dance between the traditional and the contemporary, leaving me with a deeper appreciation for Kyoto's multifaceted charm.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Hanasaki Nishikiten. The restaurant was conveniently located near Nishiki Market, and I was able to enjoy a Kyoto-style breakfast. It was a perfect start to the day, fueling me for the adventures that lay ahead.

Sanjusangendo: A Thousand Arms of Compassion

Sanjusangendo was my first stop, a temple renowned for its remarkable collection of 1,001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. As I stepped inside, I was immediately enveloped in a sense of profound tranquility. The sheer scale of the hall, Japan's longest wooden structure, was awe-inspiring, but it was the sight of the golden statues that truly took my breath away. Each statue, with its multiple arms, seemed to radiate compassion and serenity. It was a truly humbling experience, a reminder of the power of faith and the boundless capacity for human kindness.

The temple, officially known as Rengeō-in, was founded in 1164 by Taira no Kiyomori for the cloistered Emperor Go-Shirakawa. It is said that the name Sanjusangendo, meaning Temple of thirty-three bays, comes from the number of intervals between the building's support columns. The temple has a rich history, having been rebuilt in 1266 after a devastating fire. Today, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Kyoto and its people.

I spent a long time in the hall, simply absorbing the atmosphere and marveling at the artistry of the statues. It was a truly unforgettable experience, one that I will cherish for years to come.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not only in its ancient temples but also in its ability to seamlessly blend tradition with modernity.

Toji Temple: Echoes of Esoteric Buddhism

Next on my itinerary was Toji Temple, another of Kyoto's UNESCO World Heritage sites. Toji, meaning East Temple, was founded in 796, just two years after Kyoto became the capital of Japan. It was one of only three Buddhist temples allowed in the city at the time, and it has played a significant role in Kyoto's history ever since.

As I wandered through the temple grounds, I was struck by the sense of history that permeated every corner. The temple's five-story pagoda, the tallest wooden tower in Japan, dominated the skyline, a symbol of Kyoto's enduring spirit. The Kondo Hall, the main hall of the temple, housed a magnificent statue of Yakushi, the Buddha of healing, while the Miedo Hall was dedicated to Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. It was fascinating to learn that Monk Kukai, also known as Kobo-Daishi, first boarded a boat to China in AD 804 and studied Esoteric Buddhism and cultural arts.

I spent some time in the temple's garden, admiring the serene pond and the vibrant koi swimming within. It was a peaceful oasis, a place to reflect on the beauty and tranquility of Kyoto. The Toji Flea Market is also held on the 21st of each month, but unfortunately, I was not able to visit it today.

Lunch at Gion Nanba: A Culinary Journey

For lunch, I ventured into the Gion district to dine at Gion Nanba, a Michelin-starred kaiseki restaurant. Tucked away in a quiet alley, the restaurant exuded an air of understated elegance. The interior was small and intimate, with only a few counter seats and private dining rooms.

Kaiseki is a traditional Japanese multi-course meal, and Gion Nanba is known for its exquisite cuisine. The chef uses only the freshest seasonal ingredients, and each dish is a work of art. The flavors were subtle and refined, a testament to the chef's skill and artistry. The service was impeccable, with the staff explaining each dish in detail. It was a truly memorable culinary experience, one that I will savor for years to come.

I enjoyed the unique flavors of Gion Nanba, and the menu changes daily. I had dishes using seasonal ingredients, and the chef has over 20 years of experience. I was also glad to see that Gion Nanba allows web bookings by foreigners, which is not always the case with high-end restaurants in Japan.

Daimaru Kyoto Store: A Shopper's Paradise

After lunch, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Daimaru Kyoto Store. Located near Kawaramachi Station, Daimaru is one of Kyoto's largest department stores, offering a wide range of goods from high-end fashion to local crafts. I spent a few hours browsing the various floors, admiring the exquisite displays and sampling the local delicacies. The food floor was particularly impressive, a culinary paradise filled with gourmet delights.

I picked up a few souvenirs for Jean-Pierre and myself, including some traditional Japanese sweets and a beautiful silk scarf. Daimaru is a great place to find unique gifts and mementos of your trip to Kyoto.

Kyoto Tower: A Panoramic Perspective

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Kyoto Tower, the tallest structure in the city. Standing at 131 meters, the tower offers panoramic views of Kyoto and its surrounding landscape.

As I ascended to the observation deck, I was struck by the beauty of the city stretching out before me. The ancient temples and shrines, the modern buildings, and the rolling hills in the distance all combined to create a breathtaking vista. I spent a long time simply gazing at the view, soaking in the atmosphere and reflecting on my time in Kyoto.

The tower was completed in 1964, the same year that Tokyo hosted the Olympic Games. It was designed to resemble a traditional Japanese candle, a symbol of Kyoto's enduring spirit. The observation deck stands 100 meters high and offers a fantastic panoramic view over the entire city. I could even spot some of the major sites in Kyoto through the telescopes.

I learned that Kyoto Tower has faced considerable opposition during its construction, with many locals concerned that its modern design would clash with the city's traditional aesthetic. However, today, it stands as a beloved landmark, a symbol of Kyoto's ability to embrace both tradition and modernity.

I had dinner at Fujiya. The restaurant's interior had counter seats, and it served Kyoto beef, seafood, and Kyo vegetables for the courses. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day in Kyoto.

As I headed back to Hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo, I couldn't help but smile. Today had been a whirlwind of cultural immersion, culinary delights, and breathtaking views. Kyoto had truly captured my heart, and I knew that I would never forget my time in this magical city.

Tomorrow marks the end of my journey in Kyoto. My itinerary includes visits to Shimogamo Shrine, Kamigamo Shrine, and the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. In the evening, I plan to unwind at Bar Fishbowl before my departure.

It was also interesting to note that today was the Rain Prayer Festival (Amagoi Sai) at Kifune Shrine, and the Kyoto Higashiyama Hanatoro 2025 is ongoing until March 10. Kyoto is always bustling with events, making every day a unique experience.

I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore Kyoto, and I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you all. Until next time, safe travels!
