Day 1: A Grand Start: Discovering the Untamed Beauty of Douro Internacional
Exploring the Douro Valley's wild side: Parque Natural do Douro Internacional, culinary delights, and the charm of Peso da Régua.
First Impressions: Douro Valley's Embrace
After a smooth flight from Zurich, I've finally arrived in the Douro Valley with my friends. The anticipation has been building for months, and stepping onto Portuguese soil felt like the beginning of a new chapter. Our first day was a blend of natural beauty and culinary exploration, perfectly setting the tone for the rest of our adventure. The landscape here is truly breathtaking, a stark contrast to the orderly streets of Zurich, and I'm eager to share every moment with you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at A Companhia - Museu do Douro in Peso da Régua. The museum setting added a touch of historical charm to our meal. I opted for a traditional Portuguese pastry and strong coffee, which was the perfect fuel for the day ahead. The views overlooking the Douro River were simply stunning, offering a serene start to our explorations. The building itself is of historic interest, and I was able to enjoy the exhibits after breakfast.

Fueled and ready, we ventured into the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional. The park stretches along the Douro River, marking the border between Portugal and Spain. The landscape was rugged and dramatic, with deep river valleys and steep cliffs that told a story of millions of years of erosion. The park's Mediterranean microclimate, with its warmer winters, was a welcome change from the lingering chill of Zurich. I was particularly excited about the possibility of spotting some of the rare bird species that call this park home. Although we didn't see an Egyptian Vulture, the park's symbol, the views alone were worth the trip. The almond trees were just beginning to blossom, painting the landscape in delicate shades of pink and white. It reminded me of a Slovenian folk tale where almond trees were planted to appease a princess longing for snow, a beautiful gesture to chase away winter's blues.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found in the places where nature reigns supreme.
After immersing ourselves in nature, it was time to indulge in the local cuisine once more. We headed to Castas e Pratos for lunch, a restaurant recommended for its modern take on traditional Douro flavors. Located in a renovated railway warehouse with views of the Douro, the setting was as impressive as the food. I enjoyed a dish that highlighted the region's fresh ingredients, paired with a local wine, of course. The blend of traditional and modern gastronomy was a delightful experience. I'm always fascinated by how different cultures express themselves through food, and Portugal is certainly making a strong impression.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to DOC - Chef Rui Paula for dinner. This restaurant, helmed by a Michelin-starred chef, promised an unforgettable culinary experience, and it certainly delivered. The restaurant's modern architecture stood out against the riverside backdrop, and the interior was just as striking. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing Chef Rui Paula's innovative approach to Portuguese cuisine. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was both elegant and welcoming. It was the perfect way to celebrate our first day in the Douro Valley. I felt transported back to some of the fine dining experiences Ana and I have enjoyed in Slovenia, where the chefs are equally passionate about showcasing local ingredients.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped by In Douro Bar for a nightcap. It was a cozy spot with a great selection of local wines and cocktails. We chatted with some locals, sharing stories and laughter, and I felt a sense of connection that transcended language barriers. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding, the chance to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

Reflecting on the day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region with my friends. The Douro Valley has already exceeded my expectations, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. We plan to visit Quinta do Bomfim and Miradouro Casal De Loivos, which I hear offer stunning panoramic views. Before that, we'll grab breakfast at Douro Velho, and have lunch at Toca da Raposa.
I'm also looking forward to visiting Douro Gourmet, a shop that I'm sure will be filled with local delicacies and souvenirs. I'm already thinking about what to bring back for Ana and Luka. Maybe some local wine or a handcrafted souvenir.
As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for the days ahead. The Douro Valley has captured my heart, and I'm eager to continue exploring its hidden gems and sharing my experiences with you. I hope you'll join me on this journey as we uncover the beauty and charm of this remarkable region. I'm looking forward to sharing more stories and photos with you soon.
The trip reminded me of why I started this blog. It's not just about ticking off destinations, but about immersing myself in new cultures, connecting with people, and sharing those experiences with others. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a new skill or two along the way. After all, life is a journey, not a destination, and I'm grateful for every step of the way.
I also realized that I forgot my sunglasses and travel adapter. I will have to buy those tomorrow.
Good night from Douro Valley!
