Kyoto's Hidden Gems: A Day of Discovery
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of modern pop culture and ancient traditions that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Kyoto. From exploring the world of manga to visiting serene shrines and indulging in exquisite cuisine, it was a day that deepened my appreciation for this city's unique charm.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at French Dining Top of Kyoto. The panoramic views of the city from up there were simply breathtaking, a perfect way to start the day. I enjoyed a classic continental breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventures.
Next up was the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Now, I must admit, I'm not the biggest manga aficionado, but I appreciate the artistry and storytelling involved. The museum is housed in a former elementary school, which adds to its charm. Inside, I was amazed by the sheer volume of manga on display – shelves upon shelves of comics dating back decades. It was fascinating to see the evolution of the art form and learn about some of the most influential manga artists. Although a lot of the manga is in Japanese, the exhibits are in English, and I even saw a small foreign language section. I even saw a few people getting their manga caricatures done by a professional artist.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
After immersing myself in the world of manga, I decided to explore some of Kyoto's more traditional sites. I headed north to visit the Kamigamo Shrine and Shimogamo Shrine, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The crisp February air was refreshing as I walked through the serene grounds of Kamigamo Shrine. Founded in the 7th century, it's one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. The intricate architecture and the peaceful atmosphere were captivating. I learned about the shrine's history and its importance in protecting Kyoto from evil influences. The two sand cones, tatesuna, were particularly interesting; they are believed to purify the sanctuary. It was fascinating to learn that Emperors visited the shrine and designated that the deities would be notified of all imperial edicts.

Shimogamo Shrine, located downstream where the Kamo and Takano rivers meet, was equally impressive. Surrounded by the Tadasu no Mori forest, it felt like stepping into another world. The shrine is dedicated to the deity of marriage and child rearing, and it's known for its Koto sub-shrine, which houses seven smaller shrines dedicated to the Chinese Zodiac signs. I found the shrine dedicated to my birth year and offered a prayer for good fortune. I also learned about the rugby shrine within Shimogamo, dedicated to the sport after a historic game was played there in 1910. As a keen follower of sports, I found this particularly interesting.

For lunch, I ventured to Izutsu Yatsuhashi Honpo at Takashimaya Kyoto. It was a delightful experience, sampling local sweets and traditional snacks. The yatsuhashi, a Kyoto specialty, were particularly delicious.

Speaking of Takashimaya Kyoto, after lunch I decided to explore this large department store. It's a shopper's paradise, with everything from fashion and cosmetics to homeware and local crafts. I was particularly impressed by the T8 specialty store zone, which features art, records, and fashion items that you can only find there. It was a great place to pick up some souvenirs for Ana and Luka back home. I found a beautiful silk scarf for Ana and a traditional Japanese toy for Luka.

As evening approached, it was time for the highlight of the day: dinner at Kikunoi Roan. This renowned kaiseki restaurant is known for its exquisite cuisine and impeccable service. I had made a reservation well in advance, and I was eagerly anticipating the meal. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a serene atmosphere and elegant décor. The staff were incredibly attentive, explaining each dish in detail. The kaiseki menu was a culinary journey through the seasons, with each course showcasing the freshest ingredients and traditional techniques. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful grilled fish and the comforting rice dishes, every bite was a delight. I was particularly impressed by the chef's attention to detail and the artistry of the presentation. It was an experience that truly awakened my senses and deepened my appreciation for Japanese cuisine.

After such a delightful dinner, I decided to take a leisurely stroll back to Hotel ZIZI Kyoto Gion, soaking in the atmosphere of Gion. The streets were quiet, with only a few people out and about. The traditional wooden machiya houses were illuminated by soft lanterns, creating a magical ambiance. I couldn't help but reflect on the day's adventures and the incredible experiences I had had. From the modern world of manga to the ancient traditions of Shinto shrines and the exquisite artistry of kaiseki cuisine, Kyoto had once again captivated me with its unique blend of old and new.

It's hard to believe that tomorrow is already my last day in Kyoto. Time really does fly when you're having fun. I'm looking forward to exploring Kodaiji Temple, Maruyama Park, and Chionin Temple tomorrow. I also plan to visit Kyoto Star Bar for a nightcap before heading back to Zurich. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences. I am already thinking about what I am going to tell Ana and Luka when I get back. I am also thinking about all of the amazing photographs I have taken and how I will present them on my blog.
I'm also reminded of my forgotten portable charger and umbrella. I will make sure to add them to my packing list for my next adventure. I am glad that I brought my camera, travel guidebook, comfortable walking shoes, Japanese phrasebook, travel adapter and reusable water bottle. They have all come in handy during this trip.
