Explore the heart of Kyoto in Gion, where ancient traditions meet modern delights, creating an unforgettable cultural tapestry.
Kyoto's Timeless Charms
Today, I let myself get lost in the captivating alleys and vibrant culture of a district that truly embodies the spirit of Kyoto. It was a day of sensory delights, from savoring exquisite meals to witnessing the serene beauty of ancient shrines. Join me as I share the enchanting moments of my Sunday in Gion, a journey that deepened my appreciation for Japan's cultural heart.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at MUGHAL Indian Restaurant & Bar. It might seem odd to start a day in Kyoto with Indian food, but I was curious to experience this highly-rated spot. As someone who appreciates a good curry, especially after my hiking trips in the Swiss Alps, I was eager to see how it compared. The restaurant was cozy, tucked away near the Kamo River. I opted for a traditional thali, and it was a delightful surprise. The naan was particularly impressive, light and fluffy, reminiscent of the best I've had in Zurich. It was a satisfying start to a day dedicated to exploring the traditional heart of Kyoto.

With a full stomach, I set off to explore Gion, Kyoto's famed geisha district. The narrow streets, lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, transported me back in time. It felt like stepping into a living museum, where every corner held a piece of history. The air was filled with a sense of anticipation, the possibility of catching a glimpse of a geiko or maiko adding to the allure. I strolled along Hanamikoji Street, the most famous street in Gion, known for its preserved architecture and exclusive teahouses. The red lattice windows and bamboo fences exuded an air of elegance and mystery. I was mindful of the signs prohibiting photography of the geisha, respecting their privacy and the unique atmosphere of the district.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its iconic landmarks, but in the subtle, everyday moments that reveal its timeless spirit.
Next on my itinerary was Yasaka Shrine, a vibrant Shinto shrine at the eastern end of Gion. As I approached, the vermilion gates stood out against the clear February sky. The shrine was bustling with activity, as it was the day of the Setsubun Festival. The festival is celebrated to ward off evil spirits and welcome good fortune for the coming year. There were dance performances and bean-throwing ceremonies. It was a lively and colorful spectacle, offering a glimpse into Kyoto's rich cultural traditions. I watched as geisha and maiko participated in the bean-throwing, their graceful movements adding to the festive atmosphere.

For lunch, I ventured to Oryori Menami, a long-established izakaya known for its Kyoto cuisine and obanzai (traditional Kyoto-style home cooking). Finding the restaurant was a bit of a challenge, tucked away in Nakagyo Ward, but the search was well worth it. The atmosphere was tranquil, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I opted for the obanzai platter, a selection of seasonal dishes that showcased the flavors of Kyoto. Each dish was carefully prepared, highlighting the natural flavors of the ingredients. It was a delightful and authentic culinary experience, a true taste of Kyoto's culinary heritage.

As evening approached, I decided to indulge in a special dinner at Gion Mikaku, a wagyu specialty restaurant along the Shirakawa River. This restaurant is renowned for serving only unbred Tajima female cattle, prepared by skilled chefs on a teppan grill. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary. The wagyu beef was incredibly tender and juicy, cooked to perfection. I savored each bite, appreciating the rich flavors and the artistry of the chefs. The ambiance was elegant and refined, with breathtaking views of the Shirakawa River adding to the overall experience.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Bar Fishbowl, a unique bar known for its impressive selection of Japanese whiskeys and craft beers. The bar had a quirky and inviting atmosphere. As I settled in, I struck up a conversation with a local who shared some fascinating insights into Kyoto's nightlife. I sampled a few different Japanese whiskeys, each with its own distinct character. It was a relaxing and enjoyable way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity that defines Kyoto. From the ancient shrines to the bustling streets, every corner of the city tells a story. As I prepare for tomorrow's exploration of the Philosopher's Path, Nanzen-ji Temple, and Heian Shrine, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this remarkable city. I'm also looking forward to browsing the Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade. I'm sure I'll find some lovely souvenirs to take back home to Ana and Luka.
Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, leaving an indelible mark on the heart. I hope you'll join me as I continue to uncover the hidden gems and timeless treasures of this extraordinary city.
