Solo Adventure in the Cultural Heart of Japan: Exploring Kyoto
Day 10: Kyoto's Grand Finale: Temples, Parks, and Farewell Drinks
Exploring Kyoto's serene temples, vibrant parks, and enjoying a final toast to this enchanting city on my last day of solo travel.
A Fond Farewell to Kyoto
As my ten-day solo adventure in Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had. Today was all about soaking in the last moments of this ancient city, from the tranquil gardens to the lively atmosphere of its traditional bars. It's a bittersweet feeling, knowing that tomorrow I'll be heading back to Zurich, but I'm determined to make the most of every remaining second.
My final day began with a delightful breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. Located in a cozy setting, it was a nice experience with a variety of small, delicious courses. I enjoyed the warm and welcoming atmosphere. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The owner, was very friendly, making the experience even more memorable. Apparently the place is closing in February 2025 and reopening as a Karaoke bar. Times change.
With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I set off to Kodaiji Temple. The temple, founded in 1606 by Kōdai-in in memory of her husband Toyotomi Hideyoshi, exuded a sense of peace and history. As I wandered through the temple grounds, I couldn't help but admire the Momoyama-style architecture, characterized by its colorful wood lacquering and lavish gold décor. The gardens, designed by Kobori Enshu, were particularly stunning, with their meticulously manicured landscapes and serene ponds. The plum blossoms are starting to bloom, which signals the coming of spring in Kyoto.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not only in its historical landmarks but also in the moments of quiet reflection found within its serene gardens and temples.
One of the highlights of Kodaiji Temple was the bamboo grove, a tranquil oasis of towering bamboo stalks swaying gently in the breeze. Walking through the grove, I felt a sense of calm wash over me, as if the world outside had faded away. I also explored the Kaizando Hall, where Nene would pray for Hideyoshi, and the mausoleum, richly decorated with Kodaiji Makie lacquerwork. It's fascinating to learn about the history of the temple, which was supported by Tokugawa Ieyasu, a key figure in Japanese history. The temple is currently undergoing reconstruction near the entrance until March 15, 2026, but the impact on the visit was minimal.
Next on my itinerary was Maruyama Park, a vibrant green space adjacent to Yasaka Shrine. Though it's still February, there's a sense of anticipation for the cherry blossom season, which typically peaks from late March to early April. I strolled through the park, taking in the serene atmosphere and imagining the beauty of the cherry blossoms in full bloom. It's easy to see why Maruyama Park is a popular spot for hanami, the traditional custom of cherry blossom viewing. The park's centerpiece, a majestic weeping cherry tree, is particularly stunning when illuminated at night. I made a mental note to return during the cherry blossom season someday.

Nearby, I visited Yasaka Shrine. In February, the Setsubun festival is celebrated at the shrine, where maikos and geikos dance and throw soybeans to ward off bad fortune and disease. While I didn't witness the festival firsthand, I could feel the energy and excitement in the air.
From Maruyama Park, I made my way to Chionin Temple, the headquarters of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Sect) of Buddhism. As I approached the temple, I was immediately struck by the colossal Sanmon gate, the largest surviving structure of its kind in Japan. The temple's vast compounds include the site where Hōnen, the founder of the Pure Land Sect, settled to disseminate his teachings. I explored the temple grounds, admiring the intricate architecture and learning about the history of the Pure Land Sect.

One of the unique features of Chionin Temple is the Uguisubari-no-rōka, a corridor that produces a distinctive sound resembling the call of nightingales when walked upon. This ingenious design served as a warning system against intruders. I also saw the temple's giant bell, which weighs 74 tons and requires 17 monks to ring. The Gongen-do mausoleum enshrines the spirits of Tokugawa Ieyasu, his son Hidetada, and his grandson Iemitsu. Chionin Temple has a historical timeline that stretches back centuries. The temple was built in 1234 by Hōnen's disciple, Genchi, in memory of his master.
For lunch, I decided to try Tategami, a Kyoto cuisine restaurant near Nijo Castle. I opted for a mini kaiseki meal, which allowed me to sample a variety of seasonal delicacies. The dishes were not only delicious but also visually stunning, showcasing the beauty of Kyoto's culinary traditions. The restaurant had a calm atmosphere with a traditional Japanese aesthetic, and I appreciated the attentive service.

As the day drew to a close, I wanted to experience Kyoto's nightlife one last time. I ventured to Kyoto Star Bar, known for its rock-solid whisky and gin-based cocktails. The bartender, dressed in a kimono, added to the authentic atmosphere of the bar. I ordered a Ki No Bi Negroni, a local favorite, and savored the complex flavors as I reflected on my journey.

Before heading to the bar, I enjoyed a memorable dinner at Nishikawa. The restaurant is known for its Kaiseki cuisine, and I was excited to experience the elegance and grace that it offered. The service was gentle and polite, and every dish was light yet filled with seasonal aromatic ingredients. The dining ware was carefully selected to reflect current scenes in the natural world. After numerous courses, my body was full but not overwhelmed. It was a perfect way to end my culinary journey in Kyoto. The chef greeted every customer before the service started, which was a nice touch.

Tomorrow, I'll be making my way back to Osaka to catch my flight back to Zurich. While I'm eager to see Ana and Luka again, I'll miss the tranquility and beauty of Kyoto. This solo adventure has been an incredible experience, allowing me to immerse myself in Japanese culture and discover the hidden gems of this ancient city. I'm already looking forward to my next visit, hopefully with Ana and Luka by my side. Until then, Kyoto will always hold a special place in my heart.

My thoughts are already turning to future trips. Perhaps I’ll take Ana and Luka to see Slovenia, my homeland. I want them to see the beauty of Škofja Loka and experience the warmth of Slovenian hospitality. It's a different kind of beauty than Kyoto, but just as special to me.
For now, though, it's time to say sayonara to Kyoto. It's been an unforgettable journey.
