Blue Reflections and Mountain Air
Today was all about experiencing Chefchaouen beyond its famous blue walls. It was a day of contrasts, from the refreshing sounds of cascading water to the breathtaking panoramic views overlooking the entire blue city. Jean-Pierre and I set out to discover the natural beauty that surrounds this Moroccan gem, and we weren't disappointed.
Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air as we settled into our seats. It was a cozy spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of exploration. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen (buttery flatbread) with honey and a steaming glass of mint tea. Jean-Pierre, ever the adventurous one, opted for a tagine, even at breakfast! The friendly atmosphere and delicious food set the perfect tone for the day.
Fueled and ready, we made our way to Ras El Ma, a spring just outside the medina. The walk there was an experience in itself, as we navigated the bustling streets, each corner revealing a new shade of blue. I couldn't resist stopping to snap a few photos, capturing the vibrant colors and intricate details of the architecture. Even though it's March, the weather was pleasantly mild, with a gentle breeze that carried the scent of orange blossoms.
Arriving at Ras El Ma, the sound of rushing water immediately enveloped us. The spring gushes forth from the mountainside, creating a series of small waterfalls and cascades. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the medina. Locals were gathered around, some washing clothes in the cool water, others simply enjoying the refreshing spray. We watched as children splashed and played, their laughter echoing through the air. I dipped my hands in the water, feeling its invigorating coolness against my skin. It was a simple pleasure, but one that I deeply appreciated.

Sometimes, the most beautiful experiences are the ones that connect us with nature and the local culture.
After spending some time at Ras El Ma, soaking in the atmosphere and capturing the beauty of the cascades, we decided to embark on a hike to a viewpoint overlooking Chefchaouen. The trail wound its way up the hillside, offering glimpses of the blue city through the trees. The ascent was a bit challenging, but the anticipation of the view kept us going. Along the way, we passed locals tending to their gardens, their faces etched with the wisdom of generations. I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to this place and its people.
Finally, we reached the viewpoint, and the sight that greeted us was simply breathtaking. The entire city of Chefchaouen sprawled out before us, a sea of blue nestled against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. The sky was a brilliant azure, dotted with fluffy white clouds. It was a scene that seemed straight out of a postcard. Jean-Pierre and I stood there in silence, taking in the beauty of it all. I felt a sense of awe and gratitude for the opportunity to experience this magical place.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back down to the medina, our hearts full of the beauty we had witnessed. We stopped for lunch at Assaada, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I ordered a tagine with chicken and olives, while Jean-Pierre opted for the couscous. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We chatted with the friendly staff, learning more about the local culture and traditions. It was a truly immersive experience.

With the sun beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the blue city, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Chez Hicham. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. The aroma of spices and grilled meats filled the air, tantalizing our taste buds. We savored every bite, reminiscing about the adventures of the day.

To cap off our evening, we ventured to Restaurant Bar Chaouen, a local hotspot known for its lively atmosphere. The bar was buzzing with conversation and laughter, as people from all walks of life mingled and enjoyed the music. I sipped on a refreshing mint tea, while Jean-Pierre sampled a local beer. We watched as a group of musicians played traditional Moroccan music, their melodies filling the air with a sense of joy and celebration. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post from our cozy hotel room at Hotel Parador, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a day of discovery, a day of immersing ourselves in the beauty and culture of Chefchaouen. From the refreshing cascades of Ras El Ma to the breathtaking panoramic views, every moment was a treasure. And as I look forward to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of this enchanting city, starting with Plaza Uta el Hamman and the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. I have a feeling that Chefchaouen still has many more surprises in store for us.

I'm also hoping to pick up that adapter I forgot at home. It's always something, isn't it? And maybe a light jacket too, as the evenings can get a bit cooler than I anticipated. But even with these minor hiccups, I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. Chefchaouen has captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Good night from the Blue Pearl!
I'm particularly excited about visiting Plaza Uta el Hamman tomorrow. I've heard it's the heart of Chefchaouen and a great place to soak in the local atmosphere. And of course, I'm eager to explore the Ethnographic Museum to learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating region. I also plan to do some shopping at Chefchaouen crafts, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home to Lyon. Jean-Pierre is already eyeing a few leather goods, and I'm on the hunt for some traditional Moroccan jewelry.
And who knows, maybe we'll even stumble upon a hidden gem or two along the way. That's the beauty of travel, isn't it? The unexpected discoveries that make each journey so unique and memorable.
