A Day of Discovery in the Blue Pearl
Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Chefchaouen, a place where every corner tells a story and every meal is a celebration. From exploring ancient fortresses to savoring local delicacies, it was a day filled with unforgettable experiences. The weather was a bit unpredictable, with some heavy rainfall expected, but that didn't dampen our spirits one bit. Armed with our umbrellas and a sense of adventure, my friends and I set out to discover the magic hidden within these blue walls.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant populaire. After a quick search online, I knew we had to try this place.
The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Moroccan coffee filled the air as we settled into our seats. I opted for the traditional *ftour beldi*, a delightful spread of goat cheese, eggs, and olive oil. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. Jean-Pierre would have loved this breakfast, I know it. I miss him already!
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we made our way to the Kasbah. The Kasbah of Chefchaouen is a restored fortress with red walls that beautifully contrast against the blue city. Built in the 15th century to defend against Portuguese invasions, it has served as a governor's residence, a military arsenal, and even a prison over the years. As we walked through the entrance, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history contained within these walls. The entry fee was 60 MAD per adult, which felt a bit steep, but I was eager to explore the ethnographic museum housed inside.

The museum offered a fascinating glimpse into Moroccan culture, with exhibits showcasing traditional musical instruments, pottery, and weapons. I was particularly captivated by the displays of traditional clothing, each piece telling a story of the region's rich heritage. The Kasbah itself is surrounded by a wall with ten towers built in the Andalusian style, with a central garden featuring two basins. It was easy to imagine what life was like back in the 15th century. We wandered through the serene Andalusian gardens, a peaceful oasis amidst the bustling city. The architecture was stunning, with intricate details that spoke of a rich and complex history. The rain held off just long enough for us to explore the grounds and take some photos, capturing the essence of this historical landmark.
Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found in the places where history whispers.
Next on our list was Bab El Ain, one of the main gates to the medina.
As we approached, we were immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere. Locals bustled about their daily lives, and the air was filled with the sounds of lively chatter. Bab El Ain, meaning the gate of the spring, marked the entrance to the blue village. The gate itself wasn't just a physical structure; it was a gateway to a world of winding alleys and blue-washed buildings. I was fascinated by the map near the gate, even though getting lost was part of the fun.
We paused to take in the views, soaking up the energy of this bustling entrance. I imagined all the people who had passed through this gate over the centuries, each with their own stories and experiences.

For lunch, we decided on Restaurant Dar El Salam.
Online reviews promised an authentic Moroccan dining experience, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional decor that made us feel right at home. I opted for the tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, while my friends tried the couscous. Each bite was a burst of flavor, and we savored every moment. It was the perfect midday pick-me-up. I made a mental note to try and recreate the tagine when I got back to Lyon – Jean-Pierre would adore it.

After lunch, we wandered through the narrow, winding streets of the medina, getting delightfully lost in the maze of blue buildings. Each corner revealed a new surprise, from artisan shops selling handcrafted goods to hidden squares where locals gathered to chat and play games. The buildings are just magical, as though bathed in the colors of the clear March sky. I found a beautiful hand-painted bowl that I knew would look perfect in my Lyon kitchen. My friends and I bartered good-naturedly with the shopkeeper, a friendly man with a twinkle in his eye. It was moments like these that made the trip so special, connecting with the local culture on a personal level.
As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin. The name alone was enough to pique our interest, and the promise of Moroccan cuisine sealed the deal. The reviews were fantastic, with many praising the tagine and the friendly staff. We weren't disappointed. The restaurant had an exotic ambiance and lovely decor. I ordered the orange chicken, while my friends chose the tajine and laing. To finish, we shared crepes, parfait, and chocolate mousse. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Café Mundial for a nightcap.
I had read about its transformation into a lively sports bar at night, and we were eager to experience it. The café was buzzing with energy, filled with locals and tourists alike. We ordered some Moroccan mint tea and settled in to watch a football match. The atmosphere was electric, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of camaraderie with everyone around me. I was reminded of the cafes back in Lyon, where people gathered to celebrate life and enjoy each other's company. The tea was delicious, and the company was even better.
Café Mundial is more than just a place to grab a drink; it's a hub of community interaction and cultural exchange. I can see why it's so popular with locals and tourists alike. It’s the perfect spot to immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy a taste of home.
I was able to confirm what I read online: Café Mundial offers a diverse menu, friendly staff, and a picturesque setting. I tried the Moroccan mint tea, as recommended, and it was heavenly!
