A Sunday Kind of Blue

Today was all about embracing the rhythm of Chefchaouen, letting the day unfold as the locals do. No rigid plans, just a gentle immersion into the sights, sounds, and flavors of this captivating blue city. It’s funny, I’ve been to so many places, but there’s something about the way of life here that just seeps into your soul. It's a reminder that sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones where you simply allow yourself to be present.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at MIDO'S. Jean-Pierre and I shared a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with warm bread, olives, and mint tea. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The sun was just beginning to paint the sky with soft hues of pink and orange, making the blue walls of the city seem even more magical.

After breakfast, we decided to explore the Kasbah. This historical fortress, built in the 15th century, stands as a testament to Chefchaouen's rich history. Wandering through its walls, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like centuries ago. The Kasbah offered stunning views of the city, a sea of blue stretching out before us. We explored the Ethnographic Museum within the Kasbah, which gave us a deeper understanding of the local culture and traditions. I was particularly fascinated by the displays of traditional clothing and musical instruments. It's amazing how much history is packed into this relatively small space.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from simply being present in a place, absorbing its atmosphere, and allowing the unexpected to unfold.

Leaving the Kasbah, we ambled towards Jamaa, a significant mosque in Chefchaouen. The White Mosque of the Souk, as it is also known, stood as a serene contrast to the bustling market streets surrounding it. Though non-Muslims can't enter, admiring its architecture from the outside was a peaceful experience. The structure was beautiful, and it was interesting to see how it was a part of the local community.

Lunch was at Restaurant Morisco, a place recommended by several locals. It was located in Outa el Hammam square, and we managed to snag a table on the rooftop terrace. Jean-Pierre opted for a tagine, while I decided to try the ftour beldi, a regional specialty consisting of goat cheese, eggs, and olive oil. It was absolutely delicious, and the views of the square were fantastic. We spent a leisurely hour there, watching the world go by and soaking up the atmosphere.

After lunch, we wandered through the souks, the vibrant markets that are the heart of Chefchaouen. The narrow alleyways were filled with colorful shops selling everything from handmade textiles to spices and leather goods. I was on the hunt for a unique souvenir, and I finally found it at B & H Art Shop. It was a small shop, but it was packed with beautiful handmade garments. I ended up buying a lovely blue scarf, a perfect reminder of our time in Chefchaouen. The owner was incredibly kind, sharing stories about his craft and the history of the shop. It’s these personal connections that make traveling so rewarding.

As the afternoon waned, we found ourselves drawn to the quieter corners of the medina. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards adorned with potted plants and intricate tile work. It was in these moments, away from the crowds, that I truly felt connected to the spirit of Chefchaouen. The gentle murmur of conversations, the scent of jasmine in the air – it all created a sense of tranquility that was deeply soothing.

For dinner, we chose Bar Oum Rabie, a cozy spot known for its traditional Moroccan dishes and live music. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and we quickly struck up a conversation with a local couple who shared stories about their life in Chefchaouen. I tried a local specialty, a hearty stew made with lamb and vegetables, while Jean-Pierre opted for grilled fish. The food was delicious, but it was the company that made the evening truly special. As the music filled the air, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place.

As we walked back to Hotel Parador, the city was bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights. The air was cool and crisp, and the stars twinkled above us. I thought about how much I had fallen in love with Chefchaouen. It wasn't just the blue walls or the stunning scenery; it was the warmth of the people, the richness of the culture, and the sense of peace that permeated every corner of the city. I made a mental note to remember every detail, every moment, so that I could carry a piece of Chefchaouen with me wherever I went.

Thinking about tomorrow, our last day here, I’m already feeling a pang of sadness. We plan to visit Lavadero de la ciudad and Tuiles colorées, hoping to soak up every last bit of Chefchaouen’s charm before we head back to Lyon. I’m especially looking forward to breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah – I’ve heard they make a mean Moroccan mint tea! We'll have lunch at Restaurant Hajji, and for our farewell dinner, we're trying Mandala, a place that offers a mix of Moroccan and international cuisine. And perhaps, we'll end the night with a drink at BILMOS, a local bar, to toast to our Moroccan adventure.

Tomorrow marks the end of our stay in this blue-washed paradise, and while I'm eager to return to Lyon and share my stories with friends and family, a part of me will forever remain in the tranquil, azure embrace of Chefchaouen. It’s a place that has a way of capturing your heart and leaving an indelible mark on your soul. I know I’ll be back someday.
