Day 4: Lost in the Blue: Discovering Chefchaouen's Hidden Corners
Wandering through the enchanting blue streets of Chefchaouen, discovering hidden gems and savoring local flavors with friends. A day of pure bliss!
A Day in the Azure Dream
Chefchaouen, oh Chefchaouen! It’s hard to believe that each day here manages to outdo the last in terms of sheer beauty and immersive experiences. Today was no exception. With the girls by my side, I set out to explore the nooks and crannies of this blue-washed city, determined to get wonderfully lost and find some unforgettable moments along the way.
The day began, as all good days should, with a hearty breakfast. We ventured out to Cafetería Lhawta, a local favorite, and indulged in some traditional Moroccan breakfast fare. The strong coffee was just what I needed to kickstart the day, and the pastries were delightful. Jean-Pierre would have loved the strong coffee here; he always appreciates a good, robust brew.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was Darb Limoun. Wandering through its narrow, winding streets felt like stepping into a postcard. The vibrant blue hues of the buildings created a surreal and calming atmosphere. It’s amazing how a single color can transform an entire town into a work of art. I couldn't resist snapping countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. Every corner turned revealed a new, picturesque scene – a vibrant blue wall adorned with colorful flower pots, a tiny doorway leading to who-knows-where, and the friendly faces of locals going about their day. It's hard to believe such a place exists; it feels like something straight out of a dream.

Next, we made our way to Bab El Hammar, one of the city's iconic gates. The architecture was stunning, and it was fascinating to watch the locals pass through, carrying on with their daily routines. The gate served as a perfect frame for the blue city beyond, offering yet another photo opportunity that I couldn't resist. I imagined all the people who had passed through this gate over the centuries, each with their own stories and destinations. I felt a sense of connection to the past, a reminder that I was just one small part of a much larger narrative.

All this exploring had worked up an appetite, so we decided to have lunch at Restaurant Triana. The restaurant was charming, with a lovely outdoor seating area. We ordered a variety of Moroccan dishes to share, including tagine and couscous. The flavors were incredible, and it was such a treat to savor the local cuisine while soaking in the atmosphere of Chefchaouen. I made a mental note to try and recreate the tagine recipe back in Lyon – Jean-Pierre would be thrilled! The spices and aromas transported me; it's funny how food can evoke such vivid memories and emotions.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the warmth of its people and the richness of its culture.
After lunch, we continued our exploration of the Medina, getting wonderfully lost in the labyrinthine streets. We stumbled upon hidden squares, artisan workshops, and tiny shops selling everything from spices to handmade crafts. I couldn't resist buying a few souvenirs to bring back home – a colorful scarf for my mom and a small ceramic tagine for our kitchen. I love finding unique items that remind me of my travels and add a touch of exotic flair to our home in Lyon.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to take a break and enjoy a drink at Bar Oum Rabie. Apparently, it’s the only place in town that serves alcohol. We sat outside, sipping our drinks and watching the world go by. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The bar had a lively atmosphere, and it was fun to people-watch and soak in the local vibe. I even struck up a conversation with a friendly local who shared some interesting insights about the history and culture of Chefchaouen. These unexpected encounters are often the most rewarding part of traveling.

For dinner, we opted for Mandala, a restaurant known for its unique pizzas. I know, pizza in Morocco might sound a bit strange, but we were curious to try it, and it didn't disappoint! The pizzas had a Moroccan twist, with flavorful spices and local ingredients. It was a delicious and unexpected culinary experience. Plus, the restaurant had a cozy and inviting ambiance, making it the perfect place to end our day. Jean-Pierre, with his love for all things Italian, would have approved of this culinary detour.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Hotel Parador, our hearts full of wonderful memories. Chefchaouen had once again cast its spell on us, leaving us enchanted and eager for more. I already can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. We're planning to visit Park Sidi Abdelhamid and Plaza Mohammed V, and maybe do a little shopping at Jabir shop chefchaouen. I have a feeling it will be another day filled with beauty, adventure, and unforgettable moments. Getting to explore the city with my friends has been a delight. I feel so grateful for their companionship and the shared experiences we're creating together.

Back at the hotel, I’m sitting on the balcony, the cool night air washing over me. The sounds of the city are slowly fading as Chefchaouen prepares for another night. I can’t help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude for this incredible journey. It's moments like these that make me realize how lucky I am to be able to explore the world and share my experiences with all of you. And as I look up at the stars twinkling above, I know that tomorrow will bring even more magic and adventure. Goodnight from the Blue Pearl of Morocco!
P.S. I almost forgot! Today, I realized I desperately need an adapter for the Moroccan outlets. Charging my camera and phone has been a bit of a struggle. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!
