Blue Hues and Mountain Views

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of nature's tranquility and the vibrant energy of Chefchaouen's city life. After several days immersed in the blue labyrinth, I felt a yearning to connect with the natural world. Little did I know, Chefchaouen had just the right balance waiting for me.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ. Jean-Pierre and I decided to fuel up for our hike with some traditional Moroccan fare. I remember when we first moved to Lyon, discovering the local markets and bakeries was such a treat; this breakfast felt like a similar exploration of a new place through its food. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the fruit salads were particularly delightful. I must admit, the strong Moroccan tea was exactly what I needed to kickstart the day. I even made a mental note to try and recreate the mint tea when I got back to Lyon; Jean-Pierre is quite fond of it.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off for the Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. The drive itself was stunning, with the landscape transforming from the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen to the rugged, green hills of the Rif Mountains. As someone who grew up surrounded by the natural beauty of Massachusetts, I always feel a sense of peace when I'm in nature. I was excited to see what this Moroccan nature reserve had in store.

The Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve is a sprawling protected area, and I was immediately struck by the sheer diversity of plant life. The reserve is known for its efforts to conserve biodiversity and encourage sustainable development, which is a cause near and dear to my heart. We chose a trail that promised a mix of gentle slopes and panoramic views, perfect for a moderate hike.

As we ascended, the air grew crisper and the sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. The views were breathtaking; from certain vantage points, we could see the blue city nestled below, a striking contrast against the green landscape. I couldn't help but snap dozens of photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment. It was the kind of scene that made you feel incredibly small yet deeply connected to the world around you. We even spotted a few Barbary macaques frolicking in the distance, a truly special sight!

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

After a few hours of hiking, we decided to head back down, our legs tired but our minds refreshed. We had worked up quite an appetite, so we made our way to Café Restaurant Marisco Twins for lunch. Located in the heart of Chefchaouen, this spot offered a delightful change of pace from the tranquility of the mountains. The café was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to enjoy a meal.

I opted for the fish tagine, while Jean-Pierre chose the couscous with vegetables. Both dishes were flavorful and satisfying, a testament to the fresh, local ingredients. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the prices were quite reasonable. It was a great spot to people-watch and soak in the energy of the city. I remember when Jean-Pierre and I first started dating; we would spend hours in cafes in Lyon, talking and laughing, and this lunch felt like a sweet echo of those early days.

With our bellies full, we decided to take a stroll down Boulevard Mohamed V. This bustling avenue is the heart of Chefchaouen, lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. It was a sensory overload in the best way possible – the vibrant colors of the shops, the enticing aromas of street food, and the lively chatter of locals and tourists alike.

I couldn't resist popping into a few shops, browsing the colorful textiles and handicrafts. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven scarf as a souvenir, a reminder of my time in this magical blue city. Jean-Pierre, ever the patient husband, waited outside, people-watching and taking in the scene. He later told me he enjoyed observing the locals going about their daily lives, a slice of Moroccan life unfolding before his eyes.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to treat ourselves to a relaxing break at Cafe Clock. This place came highly recommended, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The cafe has a unique, multi-level setup, with cozy seating areas and a rooftop terrace offering stunning views of the city. The decor was eclectic and artsy, a refreshing change from the traditional Moroccan style.

We ordered some mint tea and pastries and settled in to enjoy the ambiance. The cafe had a laid-back, bohemian vibe, and I felt instantly at ease. The prices were a bit higher than other cafes, but the quality of the food and service made it worth it. We lingered there for a couple of hours, chatting, reading, and simply enjoying the moment. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Jbaria. We enjoyed a wonderful meal on the terrace, away from the bustling tourist crowds. The vegetarian tagine was delicious, and the atmosphere was peaceful. It was a perfect way to end a full day.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the blue city, we made our way back to Hotel Parador. Reflecting on the day, I realized how perfectly balanced it had been – the tranquility of nature, the vibrancy of city life, and the simple pleasures of good food and good company.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Kasbah and Jamaa, diving deeper into Chefchaouen's rich history and culture. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at B & H Art Shop. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, the blue hues and mountain views forever etched in my mind. The blend of natural beauty and urban charm has truly captured my heart, making this trip to Chefchaouen unforgettable. I am also thinking about the Kasbah and Jamaa, the places we intend to visit tomorrow. I am sure those visits will be as memorable as today's.

And, I am reminded that I need to buy an adapter for Moroccan outlets and a light jacket for cooler evenings, as I forgot to pack those essentials. It’s a small thing, but it’s important to be prepared, especially when traveling.

Good night from Chefchaouen!
