Nafplio, Until We Meet Again

As my two-week solo adventure in Nafplio draws to a close, I can't help but feel a mix of contentment and a touch of melancholy. This coastal town has charmed me with its blend of history, culture, and laid-back Mediterranean vibes. Today was all about soaking in those last moments, exploring hidden corners, and savoring the unique experiences Nafplio had to offer.

My final day began with a delightful breakfast at The George. The warm morning sun streamed through the windows as I enjoyed a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and fresh fruit. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration and discovery. I made sure to savor every bite, knowing it would be one of my last Greek breakfasts for a while.

With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I set off to catch the City Tour Happy Train Nafplio. I'd seen it chugging around town and thought it would be a fun way to get a final overview of the city. The little train wound its way through the narrow streets, passing by historical landmarks and scenic viewpoints. It was a relaxing way to see the sights and learn a bit more about Nafplio's rich history, all while enjoying the gentle breeze. I must admit, it was a bit touristy, but sometimes you just have to embrace the cliché!

One of the highlights of the train tour was passing by the Kapodistrias Statue. After the train tour, I decided to walk back to the statue to take a closer look. Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of Greece, played a pivotal role in shaping the nation after its liberation. The statue, crafted from white Pentelic marble, stands proudly in Kapodistrias Square, a tribute to his contributions. I spent a few moments reflecting on his legacy and the impact he had on this beautiful country. It's fascinating to think about the weight of history that permeates every corner of Nafplio.

After my historical interlude, I decided it was time for a bit of retail therapy. I strolled along the charming streets, popping into various shops and boutiques. My destination was Papailiou - The fashion store, a place I had passed by several times and always admired from the outside. It was time to treat myself, I reasoned, to a little something to remember my trip by. The store was a treasure trove of stylish clothing, showcasing contemporary Greek fashion. I found a beautiful linen dress, perfect for the warm Lyon summers, and a delicate silver necklace. The staff were incredibly helpful, offering personalized recommendations and making the whole experience a delight. I felt like I was taking a piece of Nafplio back home with me.

By now, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I made my way to To Omorfo Tavernaki for lunch. This charming tavern had been recommended to me by several locals, and I was eager to try it out. Tucked away in a small alley, it exuded a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered a selection of traditional Greek dishes, including moussaka, tzatziki, and some delicious seafood. The food was fresh, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. It was the perfect place to relax and soak in the ambiance of Nafplio one last time. I savored every bite, knowing that I would soon be back in Lyon, missing the tastes of Greece.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to one last luxurious experience. I made a reservation for dinner at Amimoni Restaurant (Nafplia Palace), located in the stunning Nafplia Palace Hotel. I'd heard rave reviews about the restaurant's elegant atmosphere and exquisite cuisine, and I wanted to end my trip on a high note. The restaurant was perched on a cliff overlooking the Argolic Gulf, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The setting was simply magical. I indulged in a multi-course meal, featuring fresh seafood, local wines, and decadent desserts. The service was impeccable, and the food was a culinary masterpiece. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to Nafplio.

As I sat there, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Nafplio had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation. I had explored ancient ruins, wandered through charming streets, savored delicious cuisine, and met wonderful people. It was an experience I would cherish forever.

Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Athens to catch my flight to Lyon. While I'm excited to return home to Jean-Pierre and our cozy apartment, I'll definitely miss the warmth and beauty of Nafplio. This solo trip has been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with myself, explore a new culture, and create lasting memories. I'm already dreaming of my next adventure, and I know that Nafplio will always hold a special place in my heart.

Before I turn in for the night, I'm going to quickly repack my bag, making sure my new linen dress and necklace are safely tucked away. I also need to double-check my transportation details for tomorrow's journey back to Athens. It's always good to be prepared, especially when traveling solo.

As I close the chapter on my Nafplio adventure, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. This trip has reminded me of the importance of embracing new experiences, stepping outside my comfort zone, and connecting with the world around me. Until next time, Nafplio, farewell!
