Exploring the Volcanic Wonders of Iceland's Myvatn Region
Day 3: Avian Adventures and Volcanic Vistas: A Day of Discovery in Myvatn
Explore the wonders of Myvatn with a visit to a unique bird museum, scenic lava formations, and a Game of Thrones cave.

A Day Immersed in Myvatn's Wonders
Today was a day of exploration and unexpected discoveries in the Myvatn region. From the delicate beauty of Icelandic birds to the rugged landscapes shaped by volcanic forces, every moment was a testament to the unique charm of this corner of Iceland. Jean-Pierre and I set out with a sense of anticipation, ready to embrace whatever adventures the day might hold.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mylla Restaurant. Fuelled up, we were ready to embrace a day filled with avian wonders and geological marvels. The restaurant itself was lovely, offering a cozy atmosphere and a menu that blended Icelandic and European cuisine.

A Flurry of Feathers at Sigurgeir's Bird Museum
Our first stop was Sigurgeir's Bird Museum. I'd read about it, but nothing prepared me for the sheer dedication and passion that radiated from every corner of the place. Sigurgeir's Bird Museum was opened on August 17th, 2008. The goal of the Museum is to educate visitors about birds, the biota in Lake Mývatn, and how people in the area used the lake for transport and survival. Inside, we discovered a collection of over 330 specimens, representing nearly every Icelandic breeding bird. Each bird had its own story, a testament to the museum owner's passion. The museum is a tribute to the avid bird collector, Sigurgeir, who spent years carefully preserving and amassing an extensive collection.

Jean-Pierre, always the pragmatist, was initially skeptical. But even he was soon captivated by the sheer variety and beauty of the birds on display. From the tiny, delicate 모습 to the majestic gyrfalcon, each specimen was a work of art. The museum also showcased tools that were used to fish in Lake Mývatn. Wandering through the exhibits, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the natural world, a reminder of the delicate balance that sustains life in this unique ecosystem.
We learned about migratory patterns, nesting habits, and the vital role these birds play in the Icelandic ecosystem. It was a fascinating glimpse into a world often overlooked, a reminder to appreciate the intricate beauty of nature. I even managed to spot a few of the birds we'd seen at the museum later in the day, soaring freely above the lake. The museum is housed in a beautiful lakeside building that fuses modern design with traditional turf house.
To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.
Höfdi: A Walk Among Lava Pillars
Next, we ventured to Höfdi, a peninsula known for its unique lava formations and serene walking trails. As we strolled along the path, we were greeted by bizarre lava pillars rising from the lake, sculpted by centuries of wind and water. The views were simply breathtaking, the still water reflecting the dramatic sky above. The park is adorned with lava pillars, smeared in orange lichens, that rise out of the water and bear the haunting name of Kálfastrandavogar. The lava formations are topped with trees, which are a rare sight in Iceland.

Höfdi offered a tranquil escape, a chance to immerse ourselves in the raw beauty of the Icelandic landscape. We paused to admire the view, the silence broken only by the gentle lapping of water against the shore. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to reconnect with nature and appreciate the simple wonders of the world.
The park was peaceful, and the views across the lake were stunning. I tried to capture the beauty with my camera, but some things are just too grand to fit into a lens. It's easy to see why Kálfastrandarvogur and Höfði are known as some of the most beautiful areas around Mývatn.
Delving into the Depths of Stóragjá
Our final stop of the day was Stóragjá, a small cave known for its crystal-clear, geothermal water. This rift is often overlooked for Grótagjá cave, as this feature was shown in Game of Thrones. The cave itself was hidden beneath a rocky outcrop, requiring a bit of a scramble to reach. As we descended into the depths, the air grew warmer, the scent of sulfur filling our nostrils.

Inside, the water shimmered in the dim light, an inviting turquoise beckoning us closer. Although swimming is discouraged due to algae and bacteria, the allure of the geothermal pool was undeniable. I couldn't resist dipping my fingers in, the water surprisingly warm against the cool cave air. The water temperature has climbed to uncomfortable levels (varying between 43° and 48°), and is technically prohibited.
Stóragjá felt like a secret world, a hidden oasis tucked away in the heart of Iceland. It was a reminder of the powerful forces that shape this island, the geothermal energy that bubbles beneath the surface. It was an exciting experience to see the fault line that marks the tectonic border between Europe and America.
Culinary Delights
For lunch, we stopped at Bistro Sel & Pizza , and Jean-Pierre enjoyed a Geysir bread IPA, which uses geysir bread to make the beer sweeter and leaves a unique taste. It has a friendly and calm environment.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to a delightful dinner at Eldey Restaurant. The restaurant highlights local Icelandic ingredients, traditional flavors, and fresh dishes. The Arctic char is from Húsavík and the lamb and beef are from North Iceland and Eyjafjörður. All the fresh vegetables and fruits are from nearby farms in Hveravellir, grown in geothermally heated greenhouses and Vallarnes which grows organic products. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day's adventures. From the delicate beauty of the birds to the rugged grandeur of the lava fields, Myvatn had captured my heart.

A Touch of Home
Before heading back to our guesthouse, we made a quick stop at Krambúðin Reykjahlíð , the local grocery store, to pick up a few essentials. I couldn't help but smile as I browsed the shelves, a familiar sense of comfort washing over me. It's funny how even in the most remote corners of the world, a simple grocery store can feel like a little piece of home. The store features a curated selection of products, ranging from fresh produce to traditional Icelandic delicacies. The store's opening hours are from 9 AM to 7 PM daily.

As we drove back, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we'd shared. Myvatn had exceeded all expectations, offering a glimpse into a world of natural wonders and hidden treasures. I was eager to see what tomorrow would bring, with plans to visit Námafjall Hverir Viewpoint and Vogafjós Farm Resort. And perhaps, if we were lucky, we'd even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights dancing above the lake. We might stop by R5 Micro Bar tomorrow [sic], too. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of this day, a reminder of the beauty and magic that awaits those who dare to explore the world.
