Stepping Back and Forward in Time

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through Iceland's dramatic landscapes and rich history. From the otherworldly geothermal fields to the cozy embrace of a traditional turf house, and finally, the comforting flavors of farm-fresh Icelandic cuisine, it was a day that truly awakened the senses.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Kaffi Borgir. The café is nestled in one of the most scenic spots in the Mývatn area, offering a fantastic view of Dimmuborgir and the lake. It's a family-run restaurant, and you can feel the warmth and dedication in every bite. Jean-Pierre and I enjoyed some local specialties, fueling up for the day ahead. I made sure to grab an extra pastry, you know, for later! It’s become a bit of a tradition on our travels to find the best local bakeries, and Kaffi Borgir certainly set a high bar.

First up on our itinerary was the Námafjall Hverir Viewpoint. As we approached, the landscape transformed into something almost alien. Steaming vents, bubbling mud pots, and colorful mineral deposits stretched out before us. The air was thick with the scent of sulfur, a reminder of the powerful geothermal forces at play beneath our feet. We parked the car and took a moment to take it all in. The sheer scale of the place was breathtaking.

We decided to hike up Námafjall for a panoramic view. There are a couple of trails, one steeper than the other. We opted for the less strenuous path, wanting to conserve our energy for the rest of the day’s adventures. As we climbed, the views became even more spectacular. To one side, we could see the vast expanse of Lake Mývatn, its serene blue waters contrasting sharply with the fiery landscape before us. On the other side, the geothermal field stretched out into the distance, a swirling canvas of colors and textures.

Reaching the summit felt like stepping onto another planet. The wind whipped around us, carrying the scent of sulfur and the sound of hissing steam. We spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, taking photos, and marveling at the raw power of nature. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

To walk through Iceland is to witness the earth in its most primal form, a landscape sculpted by fire and ice.

After descending Námafjall, we drove to Grenjaðarstaður - the Old Turfhouse, an old turf house. This historic settlement is one of Iceland's largest turf houses, offering a glimpse into the country's past. The oldest part of the existing structure dates back to 1865, and it was inhabited until 1949. As we approached, I was struck by the simplicity and ingenuity of the design. The house blended seamlessly into the landscape, its walls covered in thick layers of turf.

Inside, we wandered through the various rooms, each filled with artifacts and furniture from centuries past. It was fascinating to see how Icelanders lived in these traditional homes, relying on the earth for shelter and warmth. The house was surprisingly spacious, with interconnected rooms that allowed residents to move about freely even during the harsh winter months. I could almost imagine families gathered around the fireplace, sharing stories and laughter as the wind howled outside. Jean-Pierre, with his keen interest in history, was particularly captivated by the rune stone in the cemetery, a relic from the Middle Ages.

Grenjaðarstaður wasn't just a museum; it was a portal to another time. It offered a tangible connection to Iceland's heritage and a deeper understanding of the resilience and resourcefulness of its people.

For lunch, we headed to Vogafjós Farm Resort, a place I had been eagerly anticipating. This family-owned guesthouse and restaurant is located on the east coast of Lake Mývatn, surrounded by lava rocks and birch trees. What makes Vogafjós truly special is its commitment to farm-to-table dining. The restaurant is located right next to the cowshed, and guests can even watch the cows being milked through a glass window.

We started with some homemade Geysir rye bread, baked in their underground bakery. It was warm, dense, and slightly sweet, the perfect accompaniment to the smoked trout we ordered next. For our main courses, Jean-Pierre chose the lamb shanks, while I opted for the beef burger, made with meat from their own farm. Every dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the freshness and quality of the ingredients. And of course, we couldn't resist trying the mozzarella, made from their own cow's milk ! It was creamy, delicate, and utterly delicious.

After lunch, we took a stroll around the farm, petting the calves and enjoying the stunning views of Lake Mývatn. It was a truly idyllic setting, a perfect blend of nature, agriculture, and gastronomy. Vogafjós wasn't just a meal; it was an experience, a celebration of Icelandic hospitality and the simple pleasures of life.

As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at R5 Micro Bar. While technically located in Akureyri, it was well worth the drive. This cozy bar is known for its wide selection of local beers and unique cocktails. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. We sampled a couple of Icelandic craft beers, chatting with the friendly bartender and soaking in the local vibe. It was a delightful end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Selfoss waterfall, another panoramic point of Lake Mývatn, and the Mývatn Geothermal Area. I’m especially excited about the Mývatn Nature Baths – I hear it’s the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate after a day of hiking!.

Back at our guesthouse, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the volcanic vistas of Námafjall to the historic charm of Grenjaðarstaður and the farm-fresh flavors of Vogafjós, it was a day that captured the essence of Iceland's diverse beauty. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible country with Jean-Pierre by my side. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share my experiences with all of you.

I almost forgot to mention, there is a marathon coming up at the end of the month, the Mývatn Marathon. Maybe we should sign up next year?
