Exploring the Volcanic Wonders of Iceland's Myvatn Region

A Fond Farewell to Mývatn

As our Icelandic adventure in the Mývatn region draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had. From the otherworldly landscapes to the soothing geothermal baths, this corner of Iceland has captured my heart. Today, Jean-Pierre and I set out to soak in the last moments, determined to make the most of our final day.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi.

Located within the Mývatn Nature Baths, it was the perfect spot to grab a bite before starting our day. I opted for the traditional geyser bread with smoked arctic char, while Jean-Pierre enjoyed a freshly made sandwich. The cozy atmosphere and the stunning views of the surrounding landscape made it a delightful start to our day.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we headed to Kalfastrond.

This scenic spot is known for its bizarre lava formations and tranquil surroundings. As we walked through the area, I couldn't help but marvel at the unique landscape. The dramatic cliffs, lush greenery, and remarkable coastline created a perfect backdrop for photographs and peaceful contemplation. Jean-Pierre, ever the photographer, was in his element, capturing the changing light conditions and the vibrant flora.

The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its landscapes, but in the quiet moments of connection with nature.

We continued our exploration of the Mývatn area, driving along the lake's edge and stopping at various viewpoints. The lake itself is a sight to behold, dotted with around 50 small islets and skerries. I learned that the lake's name comes from the large numbers of midges present in the summer. Thankfully, they weren't too bothersome during our visit in May!

For lunch, we decided to try Bistro Sel & Pizza.

This restaurant is part of the Sel Hótel Mývatn, and it's known for its friendly atmosphere and diverse menu. We shared a delicious pizza made with fresh, local ingredients. Jean-Pierre was particularly impressed with their handcrafted Mývatn Öl beer, especially the geysir bread IPA. He said the geysir bread added a unique sweetness to the beer.

In the late afternoon, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Vogafjós Farm Resort.

This unique resort features a guesthouse, a restaurant next to a cowshed, and a small boutique with local products. We sat at the bar, enjoying the view of Lake Mývatn and watching the cows being milked through a glass window. It was a truly authentic Icelandic experience! I remembered how much I missed farm life back in Massachusetts, and this was a lovely reminder of those simpler times.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Mylla Restaurant for our final dinner in Mývatn.

Located at the Berjaya Mývatn Hotel, this charming restaurant offers a fusion of Icelandic and European cuisine. We enjoyed a delicious meal in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Jean-Pierre chose a traditional Icelandic dish, while I opted for a European-inspired meal. The perfect ending to our trip.

Tomorrow, we prepare to leave this magical place, our hearts full of memories. While our time in the Mývatn Region has come to an end, the experiences and memories we've created here will stay with us forever. From the stunning landscapes to the delicious food and the warm hospitality of the locals, this has been a trip of a lifetime. As we head back to Lyon, I know that a part of me will always remain in this beautiful corner of Iceland. Thank you, Mývatn, for the adventure! I'm already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever it may be.
