Oases of Art and Culinary Delights

Today was a beautiful blend of art, nature, and exquisite flavors, a true feast for the senses here in Marrakech. I've always believed that travel is about immersing oneself in the local culture, and today was a perfect example of that. From exploring enchanting gardens to savoring diverse cuisines, every moment was a vibrant experience.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at the Henna Café. Aisha would have loved the honesty of the waiter, who dissuaded us from ordering too much food – a refreshing change! I opted for the lentil soup, which was absolutely divine. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration and discovery. The café itself was charming, a tranquil escape from the bustling medina, and I couldn't help but admire the intricate henna art adorning the walls.

Fueled and ready, we set off to Anima Garden, a place I had heard so much about. The free shuttle made the journey convenient, and as we approached the garden, I could already sense something magical awaiting us. Created by the artist André Heller, Anima Garden is a sensational fusion of art and nature. As I wandered through the shady paths, I was mesmerized by the exotic plants, vibrant flowers, and whimsical sculptures. It felt like stepping into a dream, a world where art and nature coexist in perfect harmony. The Atlas Mountains provided a breathtaking backdrop, their snow-capped peaks adding to the surreal beauty of the garden. I even spotted some art by Picasso, Haring and Rodin. It was a great experience to see art in such a beautiful setting.

In the heart of Marrakech, life is a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of ancient traditions and modern aspirations, where every corner holds a story waiting to be discovered.

After spending a few hours in Anima Garden, soaking in the tranquility and inspiration, we headed back towards the city center to visit La Ménara Pavilion. This historical site offered a different kind of beauty, a serene and timeless landscape that spoke of Marrakech's rich history. Established in the 12th century, the Menara Gardens are centered around a large water basin and reservoir, next to which stands a pleasure pavilion dating back to the 19th century. The gardens were originally designed as an orchard and a practical area for agricultural experiments. As I strolled through the olive groves, I imagined sultans of old seeking respite here, much like we were doing today.

The origin of the name Menara isn't firmly established, but the Arabic word means minaret, lighthouse, or lantern. It's often suggested that this refers to the two-story pavilion standing on the edge of the main reservoir. The reservoir itself was an impressive feat of engineering, fed by a sophisticated hydraulic system that channels water from the mountains about 30 kilometers away. It serves both as an irrigation reservoir and a cooling system for the surrounding areas.

For lunch, we ventured into the heart of the Medina to Narwama, a restaurant recommended to me by a local friend. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, blending traditional Moroccan decor with modern elegance. Mohsin, our waiter, was incredibly hospitable and knowledgeable, guiding us through the menu with passion and expertise. I decided to try a traditional Moroccan dish, and it was an explosion of flavors and aromas. Hans would have loved it. The blend of spices was perfect, and the presentation was exquisite. It was a truly immersive culinary experience.

As evening approached, we made our way to Naranj Libanese for dinner. I was keen to try something different after days of traditional Moroccan cuisine, and Naranj Libanese did not disappoint. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting ambiance, with a stylish interior design. We started with the Mezze Plate, a delightful assortment of dips and vegetables. For the main course, I opted for the Beef Shawarma, which was packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The Fatet Batinjane, a stuffed aubergine dish, was another standout item on the menu. It was a delightful culinary journey, a perfect blend of Lebanese flavors with a Moroccan twist. I must try to recreate this at home, perhaps Hans and Aisha will enjoy it too.

To cap off our day, we headed to Le Salama Sky-bar, a rooftop bar offering stunning views of the city. The atmosphere was lively and vibrant, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the evening air. I ordered their signature cocktail, Le Salama, a refreshing blend of gin, lemon juice, and orange blossom water. As I sipped my drink, gazing at the twinkling lights of Marrakech below, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with beauty, culture, and culinary delights. The panoramic views of Marrakech as the sun dipped below the horizon were breathtaking, making it an ideal setting for a memorable evening.
