Exploring the Wilderness of Sarek National Park with Family
Day 2: Into the Wild: Discovering Fulufjället's Untouched Beauty
Embark on a serene hike through Fulufjället National Park with family, exploring Sweden's natural wonders and savoring local flavors.
Embracing the Wilderness of Fulufjället National Park
Today, our family ventured deep into the heart of Fulufjället National Park, a realm where the whispers of ancient forests meet the grandeur of cascading waterfalls. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Bamberg, we immersed ourselves in the raw beauty of Sweden's natural landscape, forging memories that I know we will cherish for years to come. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and profound connection with nature.
Explore the breathtaking Fulufjället National Park, a natural wonder in Sweden with stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural history.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Krogen Stora Gungan. It’s funny, even in the wilderness, Hans can find a place that reminds him of traditional German Gasthaus. The cozy atmosphere and traditional Swedish fare set the perfect tone for our day of adventure. Aisha was particularly thrilled with the *plättar*, Swedish pancakes, which she devoured with a generous helping of seasonal *sylt* (jam). Fuelled up and ready, we set out to explore Fulufjället National Park.
The drive to the park's main entrance at Njupeskär was scenic, with glimpses of the vast wilderness awaiting us. As we approached, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement, eager to explore this protected area in Dalarna province, known for its rugged mountain vistas and stunning waterfalls.
Our first stop was Naturum Fulufjället, the park's visitor center. It was invaluable, providing us with maps and insights into the park's unique environment and wildlife. Aisha was fascinated by the exhibits on the local flora and fauna, especially the information about the Siberian jay, the park's symbol. We learned about the park's history, its diverse ecosystems, and the importance of preserving this natural wonder. It’s amazing to think that this park was inaugurated in 2002 to protect the region’s unique environment and wildlife.
Before embarking on our hike, we stopped by the Fulufjället National Park shop. I wanted to get a small token to remember our visit. I ended up buying a beautifully embroidered patch of the Fulufjället National Park. It will look great on my backpack, a reminder of this amazing trip.
With our map in hand, we set off on one of the well-marked hiking trails. The trails here are amazing, with over 140 km of marked routes, there is something for everyone. We opted for a family-friendly route that would lead us to Njupeskär waterfall, Sweden's highest waterfall with a free fall of 70 meters. The hike was invigorating, with the trail winding through old-growth forests and across open moorland. The landscape was breathtaking, a tapestry of greens and browns under the vast Swedish sky. Aisha, ever the curious explorer, was captivated by the vibrant flora and the sounds of the forest. Hans, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out various geological formations, explaining how the sandstone landscape was shaped over millions of years. It’s moments like these that make our family trips so special – a blend of adventure, learning, and shared experiences.
As we hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of disconnecting from our daily routines and immersing ourselves in nature. In Bamberg, my days are often filled with museum work and cultural events, wonderful in their own right, but sometimes overwhelming. Here, surrounded by the tranquility of Fulufjället, I felt a sense of peace and clarity that had been missing. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the greatest discoveries are found not in books or museums, but in the quiet corners of the natural world.
The trail to Njupeskär was relatively short but offered stunning views of the surrounding nature. The sound of rushing water grew louder as we approached the waterfall, building anticipation for the grand reveal. And when we finally reached the viewing platform, we were not disappointed. Njupeskär was magnificent, a powerful cascade of water plunging into a deep ravine. The mist from the falls created a rainbow, adding a touch of magic to the scene. We spent a long time simply admiring the waterfall, feeling the spray on our faces and listening to the thunderous roar. It’s moments like these that remind me of the sheer power and beauty of nature.
“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.”
After taking in the awe-inspiring sight of Njupeskär, we decided to have lunch. We found a cozy spot near Restaurant Krogen Stora Gungan, surrounded by the tranquility of the park. We enjoyed a simple meal of sandwiches and fruit, savoring the flavors while listening to the sounds of nature. Aisha entertained us with stories and observations from our hike, her eyes sparkling with excitement. It was a perfect moment of togetherness, a reminder of the simple joys of family and nature.
The weather in Fulufjället in June can be unpredictable, and today was no exception. As we were finishing lunch, the sky grew darker, and a light rain began to fall. We quickly packed up our things and started heading back towards the visitor center. The rain added a different dimension to the landscape, making the colors more vibrant and the air fresher. We walked at a leisurely pace, enjoying the sensation of the rain on our skin. Aisha, ever the optimist, declared that the rain made the forest even more magical. I love her ability to find joy in every situation.
As we made our way back, we passed by several other hikers, all bundled up in rain gear and smiling despite the weather. There was a sense of camaraderie among us, a shared appreciation for the beauty of Fulufjället, rain or shine. It reminded me that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people and sharing experiences.
Back at the visitor center, we took shelter from the rain and warmed ourselves with hot chocolate. Aisha insisted on buying a souvenir – a small plush Siberian jay, which she promptly named “Fjälli”. We spent some time browsing the exhibits, learning more about the park's conservation efforts and the challenges of preserving this unique environment.
Before leaving Fulufjället, we made one last stop at Restaurant Krogen Stora Gungan for dinner. We were all craving something warm and comforting after our rainy hike. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with hikers and nature enthusiasts sharing stories of their adventures. We ordered a hearty meal of traditional Swedish cuisine, savoring the flavors and reflecting on our day in the park. Aisha, exhausted but content, fell asleep in my arms before the meal was over. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
As we drove back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Fulufjället National Park with my family. It was a day of adventure, discovery, and profound connection with nature. We explored ancient forests, admired cascading waterfalls, and learned about the importance of preserving this unique environment. But more importantly, we created lasting memories that will stay with us for years to come.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Hamra National Park. I am excited to see what new adventures await us. I am also looking forward to a relaxing evening at the ICEBAR Stockholm by ICEHOTEL. It should be a nice contrast to our day in the wilderness.
As I sit here writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of contentment. Fulufjället National Park has left an indelible mark on my soul, a reminder of the beauty and power of nature. It’s a place that I know I will return to again and again, seeking solace and inspiration in its untouched wilderness. And as we continue our journey through Sweden, I am excited to see what other natural wonders await us.
I am also glad that I remembered to pack the camera, as I managed to capture some amazing pictures today! But I really wish I hadn’t forgotten the insect repellent. The mosquitoes were quite annoying, and I ended up with several bites. I also wish I had a portable phone charger, as my phone battery died halfway through the hike.
But these minor inconveniences did not detract from the overall experience. Fulufjället National Park is a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. It’s a reminder that the world is full of beauty and wonder, waiting to be explored and appreciated. And as we continue our journey, I am committed to sharing these experiences with you, my readers, in the hope of inspiring you to embark on your own adventures.
Until tomorrow, *hej då* from Sweden!
Join us on a family adventure to Sarek National Park, Sweden, as we explore the untouched wilderness and create lasting memories together.
