Whispers of the Old Forest

Today, our Swedish adventure took us to Hamra National Park, a place where time seems to slow down and the ancient forests whisper stories of centuries past. It's a journey into the heart of Sweden's natural beauty, a world away from the bustling city life I usually navigate. I was eager to immerse myself and my family in the serene landscapes and discover the unique biodiversity of this protected haven.

Our day began, as it has for the past few days, at the Restaurant Krogen Stora Gungan. While the consistency is comforting, I’m also looking forward to exploring new culinary horizons as we venture deeper into Sarek. Aisha, however, is quite content with the familiar pancakes, and Hans appreciates the strong Swedish coffee to get his day started. It’s these small, shared moments that make our family trips so special.

After a hearty breakfast, we packed our essentials and drove towards Hamra National Park. The drive itself was picturesque, with rolling hills and verdant meadows stretching as far as the eye could see. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation building as we approached the park entrance.

As we stepped into Hamra National Park, the air immediately felt different – fresher, cleaner, and filled with the earthy scent of pine and damp soil. The sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, creating an ethereal glow that illuminated the forest floor. It was like entering a different world, a sanctuary untouched by the modern world.

Our first stop was the visitor center, where we learned about the park's history and its unique ecosystem. Hamra National Park is one of Sweden's oldest national parks, established in 1909 to protect one of the few remaining untouched forests in central Sweden. The park has since been expanded to include a diverse range of habitats, from old-growth forests to vast wetlands.

We decided to embark on the Hamraleden trail, a path that promised to showcase the best of what Hamra had to offer. As we walked, I couldn't help but marvel at the towering trees, many of which were hundreds of years old. Their gnarled branches reached towards the sky like ancient arms, and their thick trunks were covered in moss and lichen. It was a humbling experience to be surrounded by such ancient life.

Aisha was particularly fascinated by the forest floor, which was carpeted in a thick layer of moss and dotted with colorful wildflowers. She loved spotting different types of fungi and collecting fallen pinecones. It was wonderful to see her so engaged with nature, her curiosity piqued by every new discovery. Hans, ever the pragmatist, kept a watchful eye on the trail, ensuring we didn't stray too far from the marked path. He’s always been the steady hand in our family, a grounding force that balances my more impulsive nature.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

As we ventured deeper into the park, we came across a vast wetland area. The landscape transformed into a mosaic of marshes, brooks, and pine-covered islets. The air was filled with the sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of reeds. It was a tranquil scene, a perfect spot to pause and soak in the beauty of our surroundings.

We found a lovely spot by a small tarn and decided to have our lunch. I had packed some traditional Emirati snacks – dates and small pastries – which we shared while enjoying the view. Aisha, of course, preferred her usual sandwich, but she did try a date and declared it “not bad.” High praise indeed!

After lunch, we continued our hike, eventually reaching a viewing tower that offered panoramic views of the park. From above, we could see the full expanse of Hamra National Park, its forests and wetlands stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a breathtaking sight, a reminder of the vastness and beauty of the natural world.

One of the most remarkable things about Hamra National Park is its rich biodiversity. The park is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species, many of which are rare or endangered. We kept our eyes peeled for wildlife, hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the park's more elusive inhabitants. While we didn't spot any large animals, we did see several interesting birds, including woodpeckers and owls, which Aisha was thrilled about. She’s been learning about different bird species in school, so it was exciting for her to see them in their natural habitat.

As the day drew to a close, we began to make our way back towards the park entrance. The setting sun cast long shadows across the forest floor, creating a magical atmosphere. I felt a sense of contentment wash over me, a feeling of having truly connected with nature.

Before leaving the area we had dinner again at Restaurant Krogen Stora Gungan. I decided to try their local dish which was delicious. Aisha enjoyed her pasta and Hans a grilled Swedish sausage.

Back in Stockholm, while Aisha and Hans decided to turn in for the night, I couldn't resist the allure of experiencing Stockholm's nightlife, even if just for a little while. I ventured out to the ICEBAR Stockholm by ICEHOTEL. The idea of a bar made entirely of ice was too intriguing to pass up, and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

The ICEBAR was an experience like no other. Everything inside, from the walls and furniture to the glasses, was made of ice. The temperature was kept at a constant -5 degrees Celsius, and visitors were provided with thermal capes and gloves to keep warm. Despite the cold, the atmosphere was lively and fun, with music and colorful lighting adding to the ambiance.

I ordered a cocktail served in an ice glass, which was both novel and refreshing. Sipping my drink in the sub-zero environment, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity and artistry of the ice sculptors who had created this unique space. It was a surreal experience, a temporary escape into a world of ice and wonder.

As I enjoyed my drink, I struck up a conversation with a couple of tourists from France. We shared stories about our travels and experiences in Sweden, bonding over our shared appreciation for the country's natural beauty and unique culture. It was a reminder of how travel can bring people together, creating connections that transcend borders and languages.

After an hour or so, I decided to call it a night. The ICEBAR was a fun and memorable experience, but I was also looking forward to getting some rest before our next adventure. As I walked back to the hotel, I reflected on the day's events, from the serene beauty of Hamra National Park to the icy wonderland of the ICEBAR. It had been a day of contrasts, a journey from the tranquility of nature to the excitement of urban nightlife.

Tomorrow, we are heading to Ängsö National Park. I’ve heard it’s another gem, known for its unique blend of cultural landscape and natural beauty. I am particularly interested in exploring the traditional farmlands and meadows, and Aisha is already excited about the prospect of seeing more wildlife. I’m sure it will be another day filled with exploration, discovery, and unforgettable family moments. And perhaps, I'll even pick up a few souvenirs at the Ängsö National Park shop to remind us of our time here.

As I write this, nestled in our cozy hotel room, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. These moments of connection, discovery, and appreciation for the world around us are what make travel so enriching. And I hope that through my blog, I can inspire others to embark on their own adventures, to explore the beauty of our planet, and to create lasting memories with their loved ones.

As the old German saying goes, “Wer reist, der lebt,” or “He who travels, lives.” And today, I truly felt alive, immersed in the beauty and wonder of Sweden's natural landscapes. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
