Whispers of the Past, Glimmers of the Present

Today in Kyoto, Lena and I embarked on a journey that seamlessly blended the ancient with the contemporary, a dance between the echoes of history and the vibrant pulse of modern life. It’s a testament to Kyoto's unique ability to honor its heritage while embracing the present.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Saishuan Shiraki. I had read some great reviews, but unfortunately it seems that Saishuan Shiraki is closed. I was looking forward to trying the vegan dishes and the cosy atmosphere. We had to find an alternative for breakfast.

Higashiyama Jisho-ji: A Silver Reflection

Our first stop was Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion. Unlike its golden counterpart, Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji embodies a more understated elegance, a reflection of the wabi-sabi aesthetic that I've come to appreciate. As we strolled through the meticulously raked sand gardens, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. The moss-covered landscapes and the serene pond created a perfect setting for contemplation. It was easy to see why this temple is considered a Zen retreat.

The Philosopher's Path, leading away from the temple, offered a peaceful walk alongside a canal lined with cherry trees. Though the peak bloom had passed, the scattered petals on the water added a touch of ephemeral beauty.

In the quiet corners of Kyoto's temples, I find a reflection of my own journey – a blend of seeking and serenity.

Chionin Temple: A Grand Legacy

Next, we ventured to Chionin Temple, the headquarters of the Jōdo-shū (Pure Land Sect) of Buddhism. The sheer scale of the temple complex was awe-inspiring. The Sanmon gate, one of the largest wooden gates in Japan, stood as a testament to the temple's grand history. As we walked through the vast compounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the generations of monks who have dedicated their lives to this sacred place.

One of the highlights of Chionin was the Uguisubari-no-rōka, the nightingale floor. With each step, the floorboards emitted a chirping sound, designed to warn of intruders. It was a fascinating blend of practicality and artistry.

Shorenin Temple: Imperial Elegance

Our temple tour continued at Shorenin Temple, also known as the Awata Palace. This temple has a close association with the imperial family, and its atmosphere exuded a sense of stateliness. Giant camphor trees, nearly a thousand years old, greeted us at the entrance, their branches spreading overhead like ancient guardians.

Inside, we explored halls filled with gorgeous screen paintings, both traditional and modern. The strolling garden, with its small pond and vibrant azaleas, was a delight to wander through. Lena was particularly captivated by the Ryujin no Ike, the Pond of the Dragon God, and the azalea bushes and stone pagoda.

Kyoto LOFT: A Modern Oasis

After immersing ourselves in the historical and spiritual, we decided to dive into the modern side of Kyoto with a visit to Kyoto LOFT. This multi-floor emporium was a treasure trove of contemporary Japanese lifestyle products. From innovative home goods to trendy stationery, there was something to pique everyone's interest.

Lena, with her graphic designer's eye, was particularly drawn to the unique stationery and design items. I found myself fascinated by the quirky gadgets and the sheer variety of products on offer. It was a great place to pick up some souvenirs and get a sense of modern Japanese culture.

Culinary Delights: Italian and Teppanyaki

For lunch, we decided to try Antonio, an Italian restaurant in Kyoto. Nestled in the Nakagyo-ku district, Antonio offers a unique blend of Japanese culture and Italian cuisine. The restaurant's traditional Japanese architecture and cozy ambiance made it an ideal spot for a relaxing meal. We savored authentic Italian dishes prepared with a Japanese twist, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. It was a delightful culinary fusion that perfectly captured the essence of our day.

As evening approached, we headed to Gion Mikaku for dinner. This long-established restaurant specializes in Wagyu beef, offering teppanyaki-style dining. The skilled chefs prepared the meat right before our eyes, showcasing their expertise and precision. The Wagyu beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, a true indulgence. The restaurant's location along the Shirakawa River added to the ambiance, making for a memorable dining experience.

A Nightcap and Thoughts of Tomorrow

As the day drew to a close, Lena and I found ourselves reflecting on the diverse experiences we had shared. From the serene temples to the bustling shops, Kyoto had offered us a glimpse into its rich tapestry of history and modernity. We strolled back to the Ace Hotel Kyoto, our minds already anticipating the adventures that tomorrow would bring.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Kyoto Railway Museum, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and Kyoto Tower. I'm particularly excited about the Railway Museum, a chance to indulge my inner child and marvel at the engineering feats of the past. And perhaps, if the mood strikes, we'll cap off the night at WORLD KYOTO, a nightclub that promises a different kind of cultural experience.

Until then, oysasumi nasai from Kyoto.

P.S. I really need to remember to pack an umbrella next time. The weather forecast was clear, but a brief afternoon shower caught us by surprise! And a Japanese phrasebook would definitely come in handy for those off-the-beaten-path encounters.
