Blooming Beauty and Ancient Spirits

Today was a day of serene exploration, diving deep into Kyoto's blend of natural beauty and spiritual heritage. Lena and I set out to experience some of the city's most tranquil spots, from the vibrant Kyoto Botanical Gardens to the sacred grounds of Kamigamo and Shimogamo Shrines. It was a day of reflection, appreciation, and a whole lot of walking, but every step was worth it.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. I'd read some great reviews online, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The restaurant specializes in Kyoto-style set meals made with seasonal ingredients. Lena particularly enjoyed the Obanzai all-you-can-eat option, which featured a variety of local vegetables prepared in traditional ways. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we made our way to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. I was particularly excited about this, as I’d read that April is a fantastic time to visit, with many cherry trees in bloom. And the gardens didn't disappoint! There were tulips dancing in the breeze as well. The gardens were a riot of color, with various cherry blossom trees in full bloom. We spent a good few hours wandering through the different sections, admiring the meticulously manicured displays and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

After the Botanical Gardens, we headed north to Kamigamo Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest and most important Shinto shrines. As we approached, the atmosphere shifted from one of simple beauty to one of profound reverence. The shrine's history stretches back centuries, and you could feel the weight of tradition in the air. We took our time exploring the grounds, admiring the intricate architecture and the serene surroundings. I was particularly struck by the main hall, with its imposing roof and ornate details.

While we were there, we learned about the Kamo Kurabeuma Horse Race, a traditional ritual held every May 5th at Kamigamo Shrine. It's part of the Aoi Matsuri Festival, and involves two horsemen racing through the shrine grounds as a tribute to the gods. I made a mental note to try and catch it if we're ever in Kyoto during that time.

From Kamigamo, we made our way to Shimogamo Shrine, located a bit further south. Like Kamigamo, Shimogamo is an ancient shrine with a rich history. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage site, and as soon as we stepped through the main gate, it was easy to see why. The shrine is set within the Tadasu no Mori forest, a tranquil oasis of towering trees and winding paths. We wandered through the forest, enjoying the dappled sunlight and the sound of birdsong. It felt like stepping into another world.

Before heading for dinner, Lena and I stopped by Daimaru Kyoto Store. Lena wanted to do a little shopping, and I was happy to tag along. Daimaru is a large department store with a wide variety of goods, from high-end fashion to local crafts. We spent a bit of time browsing the different floors, and Lena ended up buying a beautiful silk scarf. I picked up a few small souvenirs for my family back in Germany.

For lunch, we stopped at Anzukko, a gyoza bar located down a small alley near Sanjo Station. It was a small, cozy place with a friendly atmosphere. I tried the Anzukko Gyoza, which were delicious. Lena opted for the seafood boiled dumplings, which she enjoyed. It was a great spot for a quick and tasty lunch.

The highlight of the day was definitely dinner at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. I'd heard so much about Kobe beef, and I was eager to try it for myself. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a teppanyaki grill where the chef prepared the food right in front of us. We both opted for the Kobe beef sirloin, and it was melt-in-your-mouth amazing. The chef cooked the beef to perfection, and the flavors were incredible. It was definitely one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The garlic chips were also a favorite!

As we walked back to the Ace Hotel Kyoto, Lena and I reflected on the day. We'd seen so much beauty and experienced so much tranquility. It was a day that nourished both our bodies and our souls. Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Kodaiji Temple, Maruyama Park, and Yasaka Shrine. I'm excited to see what other wonders Kyoto has in store for us. I might try a Rocking Bar for the first time as well!

It's experiences like today that remind me why I love to travel. Getting out of my comfort zone, immersing myself in new cultures, and discovering hidden gems – it's what makes life so exciting. And sharing these experiences with Lena makes them all the more special. Even though my Japanese phrasebook is still in Germany, we manage to communicate and enjoy each other's company.

As I sit here writing this, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. Kyoto, you've captured my heart. I can't wait to see what else you have to offer.

I'm also reminded to pack an umbrella for our next adventure, just in case the weather decides to surprise us. After all, a little rain can't dampen our spirits when we're surrounded by such beauty and wonder.

And now, it's time to rest up and recharge for another day of exploration. Stay tuned for more tales from our cultural immersion in Kyoto!

Until tomorrow,

Matthew
