A Taste of Tradition and Modernity

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kyoto, a sensory explosion that blended the city's rich history with its vibrant modern life. Lena and I set out with the intention of experiencing Kyoto like locals, and I think we managed to do just that. It was a day filled with delicious food, captivating sights, and a few unexpected discoveries.

Our day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. Nestled away on a quiet backstreet not too far from Nishiki Market, this charming restaurant was the perfect spot to fuel up for the day. I opted for their famous 'Heavenly Vegan Pancakes,' while Lena chose the 'Kyoto Katsu Burger.' Mine were ultra-fluffy and soufflé-like, and I could see why they are all the rage in Japan. Lena enjoyed the Kyoto Katsu Burger, a delightful local specialty. It’s amazing how they manage to make vegan food so delicious and satisfying!

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we headed straight to Nishiki Market, Kyoto's bustling kitchen. From the moment we stepped inside, we were swept away by the sheer variety of sights, sounds, and smells. The market was packed, but the energy was infectious. Narrow stalls overflowed with everything imaginable, from colorful pickles and fresh seafood to mochi and green tea ice cream. We sampled our way through the market, trying various local delicacies. I was brave enough to try a skewered octopus head, while Lena stuck to some delicious tamago.

Exploring a place is not just about seeing the sights, but also about tasting the flavors and feeling the pulse of its local life.

The market was a fascinating mix of tourists and locals, and it felt like a truly authentic experience. We even stumbled upon Nishiki-Tenmangu Shrine, a small but charming Shinto shrine tucked away amidst the bustling stalls. After navigating through the crowds, we decided to take a break and grab some matcha ice cream. I had read online that some people consider Nishiki Market a tourist trap with below-average food, but I disagree. Yes, it's touristy, but it’s also a vibrant and exciting place to experience Kyoto's culinary scene. It felt like a true slice of Kyoto life.

After the market, we strolled through Pontocho, a narrow alleyway running alongside the Kamogawa River. During the day, it was relatively quiet, but I could already sense the vibrant nightlife that would come alive later. The alley was lined with restaurants and bars, many of which had outdoor seating overlooking the river. I made a mental note to return in the evening for a drink and soak in the atmosphere.

As evening approached, we made our way to Hanamikoji Street in the Gion district, Kyoto's most famous geisha district. The area was beautiful, with its traditional wooden machiya houses and lantern-lit streets. It felt like stepping back in time. We wandered through the streets, admiring the architecture and soaking in the atmosphere. While we didn't spot any geishas, the ambiance was captivating enough. I was mindful of the warnings I had read about being respectful in the geisha district, especially regarding photography. It's important to remember that this is a real neighborhood, not just a tourist attraction.

For dinner, we had reservations at Yoshikawa, a renowned restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine and tempura. The restaurant was located in a beautiful traditional building, and the atmosphere was serene and elegant. We opted for the Kaiseki course, a multi-course Japanese haute cuisine experience. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. From the delicate sashimi to the perfectly cooked tempura, every bite was a delight. The service was impeccable, and the staff were knowledgeable and attentive.

After such a refined dining experience, we decided to experience another side of Kyoto's nightlife and headed to Turquoise Bar. Tucked away in the Kiyamachi area, this cozy bar was a welcome change of pace. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the bartenders were skilled mixologists. I ordered a classic Old Fashioned, while Lena tried one of their signature cocktails. We chatted with the friendly bartenders, who shared their insights into Kyoto's nightlife and culture. It was the perfect way to wind down after a long day of exploring.

As we walked back to the Ace Hotel Kyoto, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the bustling Nishiki Market to the serene Hanamikoji Street and the exquisite Yoshikawa, Kyoto had captivated us with its blend of tradition and modernity. We're already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Fushimi-Momoyama-jō Castle, the Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum, and the Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace. I’m especially excited about the sake museum, and Lena is looking forward to exploring the Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade. It's hard to believe we only have a few days left in this amazing city. I want to make the most of every moment, soaking in the culture, tasting the food, and experiencing the magic of Kyoto.

Tomorrow will be Day 11, and with only a few days left, I'm trying to soak in every moment. It's a bit sad to think this adventure is nearing its end, but I know we'll be taking home a lifetime of memories. I'm also starting to think about what I've forgotten to pack. I really wish I had brought that umbrella – the weather forecast keeps hinting at rain. And a Japanese phrasebook would have been incredibly useful in some of the more local spots. Oh well, live and learn, right?

It's nights like these, reminiscing about the day's adventures while planning for the next, that make me realize how lucky I am to be doing this. Balancing my software development work with travel blogging isn't always easy, but experiences like this make it all worthwhile. And having Lena by my side, sharing these moments, makes it even more special. I wonder where our next adventure will take us after Kyoto? Perhaps somewhere closer to home in Canada? Or maybe another European city we haven't explored yet? The possibilities seem endless, and that's what excites me the most.

For now, though, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. Goodnight from Kyoto!
