A Day of Triumphs and Traditions

Another day, another adventure in the heart of Norway! Today was a blend of cultural immersion and physical challenge, a combination that always makes for a memorable experience. I ventured into the past at Lom bygdamuseun before taking on the famed Besseggen hike. Let me tell you all about it.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Lemonsjøen Fjellstue & Hyttegrend. Fuelled up, I set out to explore the Lom bygdamuseun.

It’s an open-air museum that showcases the history and culture of the Lom region, with buildings dating back to 1613. Wandering through the grounds, I was transported back in time, imagining what life must have been like for the people who lived here centuries ago. The museum is set in a green environment, only 300 meters from the center of Fossbergom. It offered a fascinating glimpse into traditional Norwegian life, with its well-preserved buildings and exhibits about local customs. I spent a couple of hours soaking in the history, truly appreciating the heritage of this beautiful area. There was something special about walking through these old buildings, connecting with the past in such a tangible way. It made me think about my own roots back in Kelowna and how important it is to preserve those stories for future generations.

After the museum, it was time for the main event: the Besseggen hike.

I’d heard so much about it, and seen countless photos, but nothing could quite prepare me for the real thing. Getting to the starting point required a bit of travel. I hopped on a bus to Gjendesheim, the gateway to the Besseggen trail. The bus ride itself was scenic, winding through valleys and alongside crystal-clear lakes. The anticipation was building with every kilometer!

The Besseggen hike is known as one of Norway's most famous hikes. It's a demanding trek, recommended for experienced hikers in good physical health. The ridge is steep, exposed, and can be windy, especially challenging in rainy weather. I made sure to check the forecast and ask locals for advice before setting off. The weather in Jotunheimen in June can be unpredictable, with average highs of 48°F (9°C) and lows of 36°F (2°C). There's also a chance of rain, so I packed accordingly.

Starting from Memurubu, the first hour was a steep incline. The trail then flattens out, leading to the most famous part: the narrow strip with the blue Bessvatn Lake on one side and the emerald Gjende Lake on the other. This spot offered a breathtaking view, perfect for catching my breath and taking in the scenery. The Besseggen ridge itself was quite narrow, requiring careful steps, especially when encountering other hikers.

The climb up the ridge involved some scrambling, using both hands and feet to navigate the steep sections. Reaching the top was an incredible feeling. Turning around, the view of the two lakes separated by the ridge was truly amazing. From there, the trail continued over Veslefjell Mountain, the 'roof of Besseggen,' marked by large piles of rocks. The remaining kilometers back to Gjendesheim were a welcome, though sometimes steep, walk.

The hike is about 14 kilometers long with an ascent of 1,100 meters, typically taking six to eight hours. I found the hike challenging but incredibly rewarding. The views were simply stunning, and the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the end was immense. I felt like I had truly earned my title of a 'serious hiker'.

After the exhilaration of the hike, I treated myself to a well-deserved late lunch at Andre Etasje.

It was the perfect way to refuel and reflect on the day’s adventures. As the sun began to set, I decided to check out Toppen Skybar.

Unfortunately, it seems Toppen Skybar is actually located in Lillehammer, not directly in Jotunheimen, so I was unable to visit it today. However, I did find a cozy spot to relax and enjoy a quiet evening, savoring the memories of the day. I ended the day with a hearty dinner at Jotunheimen Fjellstue.

Reflecting on the incredible experiences of the day. The hearty meal was the perfect way to end a day filled with both historical exploration and physical exertion.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, my plan is to explore Jostedalsbreen National Park and hike Veostien. Before heading there, I'll grab breakfast at Aasgaard stogo. Lunch will be at Brimi Sæter, and I plan to have dinner at Fossheim Hotell -Restaurant. I'll also need to stop by KIWI Lom to pick up some supplies for the journey back to Germany. It’s hard to believe this adventure is coming to an end. I’m already feeling a tinge of sadness, but also immense gratitude for the experiences I’ve had here. Norway, you’ve been amazing!

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment and contentment. This solo trip to Jotunheimen has been exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, challenge myself physically, and reflect on my life. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible part of the world, and I can’t wait to share more stories and photos with you all. I hope my adventures inspire you to embark on your own journeys, whether they’re across the globe or just in your own backyard. Until tomorrow, happy travels!

P.S. I really missed Lena today. I know she would have loved the views from Besseggen. Next time, I’m definitely bringing her along!
