Cultural Winter Retreat in Kyoto with Family
Day 3: A Winter's Tale in Arashiyama: Temples, Bamboo, and Culinary Delights
Journey through Arashiyama's serene winter landscapes, from the Zen gardens of Tenryu-ji to the vibrant Shinkyogoku street. A day of cultural immersion.
Whispers of Winter in Arashiyama
Today, the third day of our Kyoto adventure, unfolded like a carefully crafted scroll, revealing the serene beauty of Arashiyama in its winter guise. With my family bundled in our warmest layers, we ventured into a landscape where the crisp air carried the whispers of ancient tales and the promise of culinary delights. The morning sun cast long shadows, painting the snow-dusted scenery in hues of gold and white, creating a magical atmosphere that I knew we would cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza, a cozy spot that offered a comforting respite from the cold. The aroma of freshly baked dough and melting cheese filled the air as we settled into our seats. It felt a little odd to have pizza in Japan, but the reviews were too good to pass up. David, ever the traditionalist, initially raised an eyebrow, but even he couldn't resist the allure of a perfectly crisp, chewy crust topped with delicious sauce and chili oil. Emily, of course, was thrilled with the change of pace, and I must admit, it was a delightful start to the day. It was a pleasant change of pace, and it gave us the energy we needed for a day of exploring. I am glad that we gave it a try, and it is always nice to have a meal that everyone enjoys.

After breakfast, we made our way to Arashiyama. The train ride itself was a treat, offering glimpses of the winter landscape as we approached our destination. As we stepped off the train, we were greeted by the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge, gracefully spanning the Katsura River. The mountains in the background were dusted with snow, creating a postcard-perfect scene. Despite the cold, the area was bustling with tourists and locals alike, all eager to soak in the beauty of Arashiyama.
Our first stop was Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its exquisite Zen garden. As we entered the temple grounds, a sense of tranquility washed over us. The Sogenchi Garden, designed by Musō Soseki, the temple’s founder, was a masterpiece of minimalist beauty. The snow-covered rocks and the meticulously raked patterns in the white sand created a serene, otherworldly landscape. I could almost feel the weight of centuries of history and contemplation as we strolled through the garden.

In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.
David, a history teacher through and through, was captivated by the temple's architecture and the stories behind it. Emily, ever the free spirit, found solace in the quiet corners of the garden, taking photos and sketching in her notebook. As for me, I simply enjoyed the peace and serenity of the moment, grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. I found myself reflecting on the beauty of simplicity and the importance of finding moments of stillness in our busy lives. It was a reminder that even in the midst of winter, there is always the promise of spring.
Next, we ventured into the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. The towering bamboo stalks, dusted with frost, created a surreal, almost otherworldly atmosphere. The sunlight filtering through the bamboo canopy cast dappled shadows on the path, creating a mesmerizing effect. I could hear the gentle rustling of the bamboo leaves in the wind, a sound that seemed to carry the secrets of the forest. The grove exuded a crisp and tranquil atmosphere, offering a welcome respite from the bustling crowds. As we walked deeper into the grove, I felt a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty of nature. It was as if we had stepped into a different world, a world of peace and tranquility.
After our immersive experience in Arashiyama, we hopped on a train back to Kyoto city center, eager to explore the vibrant Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This bustling covered arcade was a stark contrast to the serene landscapes we had just left behind. The street was alive with activity, packed with shops, restaurants, and people from all walks of life. It was a shopper's paradise, offering everything from traditional crafts and souvenirs to trendy fashion and electronics. We spent hours browsing the shops, sampling local snacks, and soaking in the lively atmosphere.

Emily was particularly excited about the trendy fashion boutiques, while David was drawn to the shops selling traditional crafts and antiques. I, of course, was in search of the perfect souvenir to remind me of our time in Kyoto. The shopping street also houses a number of temples and shrines, providing a unique blend of the old and the new. We stopped by a small temple to offer a prayer for good fortune and to light a candle for our loved ones back home. It was a reminder that even in the midst of a bustling city, there is always room for spirituality and reflection.
As evening approached, we made our way to THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO Restaurant for dinner. Located in a beautifully restored traditional Japanese building, the restaurant exuded an air of elegance and sophistication. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the service was impeccable. We were seated at a table overlooking a serene garden, and the soft lighting created a romantic atmosphere. The restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine with a Japanese twist, and the menu featured a range of innovative and delicious dishes.

We started with a selection of appetizers, including a delicate sashimi carpaccio and a creamy burrata with roasted vegetables. For our main courses, David opted for the grilled wagyu beef, while Emily chose the seafood risotto. I decided to try the chef's special, a pan-seared duck breast with a cherry reduction. Every dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The ingredients were fresh and locally sourced, and the presentation was impeccable. The meal was a true culinary experience, and it was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.
Reflecting on the day, I was struck by the diversity and beauty of Kyoto. From the serene landscapes of Arashiyama to the bustling streets of Shinkyogoku, this city truly has something for everyone. And as we prepare for another day of adventures tomorrow, with plans to visit Kiyomizu-dera and explore the charming streets of Sannenzaka, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. I am eager to see what other treasures this ancient city has in store for us, and I know that each day will be filled with unforgettable memories. Perhaps we'll even find time to enjoy a drink at L'Escamoteur. As I drift off to sleep tonight, I am grateful for the opportunity to share this journey with my family, and I am reminded of the words of the great Zen master, Shunryu Suzuki:
Each moment is a perfect opportunity.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Kiyomizu-dera and Sannenzaka. I’m particularly excited to see Kiyomizu-dera; its wooden stage is supposed to be stunning, and I have heard that Sannenzaka is a great place to buy souvenirs. We'll also be trying out Mezopotamia Kebab House for breakfast, Yasakadori Enraku for lunch, and Nakamura for dinner. It promises to be another day filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights. Good night from Kyoto.
