Day 3: Immersed in Sami Culture: A Day of Discovery on the Finnmark Plateau
Exploring Sami heritage on the Finnmark Plateau: reindeer encounters, cultural insights, and Arctic landscapes under the midnight sun.
A Journey into Sami Heritage
Today was a day of deep cultural immersion, a chance to connect with the Sami people and their rich heritage here on the Finnmark Plateau. It's moments like these that truly make a trip unforgettable, offering a glimpse into a world so different from our own, yet so deeply connected to the natural world.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Fisherman's Cabin, fueling up for a day of exploration and learning. The simple, comforting meal set the tone for a day focused on authenticity and connection. Afterwards, we set out for Midt Finnmark Siida, eager to learn about Sami culture firsthand.

At Midt Finnmark Siida, we were welcomed into a world where tradition and modernity intertwine. Heidi and Nils Jovnna, the reindeer owners and hosts, greeted us with warm smiles, instantly making us feel like honored guests. Their children were also involved, showcasing how the Sami way of life is passed down through generations.
We were immediately immersed in stories of growing up in a reindeer-herding family. It was fascinating to hear about their daily lives, the challenges and rewards of working with the land and animals, and the deep connection they have with their culture. The passion they had for their heritage was palpable, and it was contagious.
A culture is no better than its arts; and art is no better than its affections.
One of the highlights was learning about traditional Sami clothing, crafts, and their harmonious relationship with nature. The exhibits detailed the Sami lifestyle, including reindeer herding practices and the significance of the natural environment. It became clear how closely intertwined their existence is with the Arctic landscape. I was particularly struck by the intricate details of their traditional clothing, each piece telling a story of the wearer's identity and connection to the land. Hans, with his engineering mind, was fascinated by the tools and techniques used in reindeer herding, asking many questions about the practical aspects of their lifestyle.
We also had the opportunity to participate in a storytelling session, where we heard captivating tales of Sami folklore. The stories were filled with mythical creatures, brave heroes, and lessons about respecting nature. It was a wonderful way to connect with the Sami culture on a deeper level, understanding their values and beliefs through the power of narrative. I found myself completely drawn in, imagining the landscapes and characters as if they were right before my eyes.
After spending the morning at Midt Finnmark Siida, we drove to Karasjok to visit De Samiske Samlinger, the Sami Museum. This museum is the main museum for Sami art, culture, and history, holding around 5,000 items, an art collection of about 800 works, and an open-air museum with dozens of buildings. Founded in 1972, it was the first Sami cultural institution in Norway.

Exploring the exhibits, we gained a broader understanding of Sami history, from ancient traditions to contemporary expressions. The museum beautifully showcased the evolution of Sami culture, highlighting both its resilience and its adaptability. I was particularly moved by the displays on Sami art, which reflected a deep connection to the land and a unique artistic vision. Hans was intrigued by the historical artifacts, carefully examining the tools and objects used by Sami people throughout the centuries.
One exhibit focused on the duodji traditions, the Sami artisan crafts that are still alive and well today. It was inspiring to see how these traditions are passed on to younger generations, ensuring the preservation of Sami cultural heritage. I was particularly drawn to the intricate beadwork and the beautiful designs woven into the textiles. It reminded me of the knitting I do back in Berlin, a connection to heritage and tradition that transcends borders.
As we walked through the museum, I couldn't help but reflect on the challenges the Sami people have faced throughout history, including assimilation policies and the suppression of their language and culture. Yet, despite these challenges, the Sami have persevered, maintaining their unique identity and revitalizing their cultural traditions. It was a testament to their strength and resilience, a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the face of adversity.
Before leaving Karasjok, we stopped by The Northern Lights Giftshop & Cinema, hoping to find a special souvenir to remember our day. While we didn't buy anything, it was a nice way to end our visit, surrounded by beautiful crafts and images of the Arctic landscapes. I did make a mental note to perhaps buy a small piece of Sami-inspired jewelry online when we get back to Berlin, a little reminder of our time here.

We had all our meals at the Fisherman’s Cabin today. The food was simple and hearty, providing the fuel we needed for our cultural explorations. It was comforting to know that we had a reliable place to return to for nourishment and rest.
As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves reflecting on the profound experiences we had encountered. The Finnmark Plateau, with its vast landscapes and rich cultural heritage, had truly captured our hearts. It was a day of learning, connection, and appreciation, a reminder of the importance of understanding and respecting different cultures.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Flatmoen Natur and Gabofossen. I am excited to see more of the natural beauty of this region, and I am sure it will be another day filled with wonder and discovery. And perhaps we'll stop by Sorrisniva for a drink in the evening, a perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking and exploration.
Back at our tent, as the midnight sun casts its gentle glow over the landscape, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the Sami culture firsthand. It’s a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with people, learning from their experiences, and broadening our understanding of the world. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for what tomorrow may bring, knowing that each day on the Finnmark Plateau is a chance to discover something new and meaningful.
