Solo Art Adventure on Naoshima Island
Day 9: Art and Tranquility: Discovering the Soul of Naoshima
Immerse yourself in Naoshima's art and nature, from the Cultural Melting Bath to the serene Kasaneiwa, a day of cultural immersion.
A Day of Serenity and Art
Today was a day of quiet contemplation and artistic exploration here on Naoshima. Leaving behind the bustling energy of Berlin, I found myself drawn into the serene embrace of this island, where art and nature intertwine in the most harmonious way. It's amazing how a place can shift your perspective, inviting you to slow down and truly appreciate the beauty around you.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Chikurin. It was a charming start to the day, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and delicious Japanese breakfast.

Cultural Immersion at the Melting Bath
After breakfast, I made my way to the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. The summer heat was already building, but I was eager to experience this unique outdoor artwork at the Benesse House Museum. Although the bathing experience is typically reserved for Benesse House hotel guests and available only on Sundays, the site itself was a fascinating blend of Feng Shui principles and artistic expression. The Cultural Melting Bath was built on the coast of Naoshima with the strongest flow of energy, based on the philosophy of Feng Shui. I could only imagine how relaxing it would be to soak in the Chinese herbal medicinal bath while gazing out at the Seto Inland Sea. Even without the actual bath, the location exuded tranquility and a sense of connection with nature. I took my time wandering around the area, sketchbook in hand, capturing the essence of the space with a few quick drawings. The way the light played on the rocks and the gentle sound of the waves created a truly meditative experience.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Finding Peace at Kasaneiwa
Next on my itinerary was Kasaneiwa, a site I had read about that promised both natural beauty and a sense of spiritual connection. The walk to Kasaneiwa was an adventure in itself. The path was a bit steep and rocky, but the anticipation of what awaited me at the top kept me going. As I climbed, I was rewarded with stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea, the water sparkling under the midday sun. Kasaneiwa itself was a sight to behold. These two rocks, mysteriously stacked one on top of the other, seemed to defy gravity. There is a small shrine, Kose-ishizuchi Shrine, which enshrines the two rocks, and I took a moment to sit and reflect on the history and mystery surrounding this place. No one knows whether these rocks were naturally or artificially placed this way. I spent some time simply being present, enjoying the panoramic views and the quiet energy of the site. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, a chance to clear my mind and connect with the natural world.

Lunch at EAT LOCAL 直島食堂
By now, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I headed to EAT LOCAL 直島食堂 for lunch. This restaurant is located in Tsutsujiso, a seaside park where you can stay in unique trailer-style accommodations. I decided to try the local seafood bowl, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The restaurant prides itself on using local ingredients, and you could really taste the difference. While enjoying my meal, I watched families playing on the beach and the ferries coming and going in the distance. It was a quintessential Naoshima moment – simple, peaceful, and connected to the local culture.

Evening Reflections at Little Plum
As the day began to wind down, I sought out a place to relax and reflect on my experiences. I decided to visit Little Plum, a cozy cafe-bar near the Miyanoura Port. It’s known as the only spot open after 9 pm on the entire island. This charming spot, housed in a renovated marine container, was just what I needed. I ordered a local beer and sat outside, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, with a mix of locals and tourists chatting and laughing. It felt like the perfect place to unwind and soak in the unique vibe of Naoshima. I was told that Little Plum also offers dormitory-style accommodations and bicycle rentals, making it a convenient hub for travelers.

Dinner at Luke's Table
For dinner, I had made a reservation at Luke's Table, a restaurant at My Lodge Naoshima. This establishment is known for its Setouchi slow food concept, using local ingredients and traditional recipes. As I enjoyed my meal, I thought about how much I appreciate the island's commitment to sustainability and community.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the *Art House Project: Kadoya* and visit the *Naoshima Fishing Park*. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems this island has to offer. Until then, goodnight from Naoshima.
I'm so glad I remembered to pack my travel-sized art supplies this time, they've been invaluable for capturing these moments. I still wish I had brought my reusable water bottle, though. The convenience stores here do sell water, but I always feel a bit guilty about the plastic waste. I'll definitely make sure to have it with me for tomorrow's adventures. I wonder what Hans is up to back in Berlin. I should give him a call tomorrow.
