Nature's Embrace: A Day of Discovery in Þórsmörk

Today was a day of serene exploration, immersing myself in the natural wonders that Þórsmörk has to offer. From the cascading beauty of Fremri-Fellsfoss to the tranquil embrace of Þrastaskógur forest, every moment felt like a step deeper into Iceland's soul. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the predictability of a 9-to-5 for the freedom of freelance photography and travel. Liam always jokes that I have a sixth sense for finding the most peaceful spots, and today, I think I outdid myself.

The day began, as most have on this trip, with a hearty breakfast at Volcano Huts Húsadalur. I needed the fuel for the adventures ahead. The buffet was simple but satisfying, offering homemade bread, eggs, and the ever-present skyr. Fuelled up, I set off towards my first destination: Fremri-Fellsfoss waterfall.

The hike to Fremri-Fellsfoss was invigorating. The trail wound its way through the landscape, offering glimpses of the Skógá River, which originates from the saddle between the Eyjafjallajökull and Katla volcanoes. The sound of rushing water grew louder as I approached, and soon enough, the waterfall came into view. It wasn't as massive as Skógafoss, but Fremri-Fellsfoss possessed a charm all its own, thundering 48 feet into a narrow section of the canyon. The spray kissed my face as I stood in awe, camera in hand, capturing the moment from every possible angle. I could see Innri-Fellsfoss in the background, which created a stellar vista.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

After spending a good hour at the waterfall, soaking in its beauty, I decided to head towards Þrastaskógur. This forest, near Selfoss, promised a peaceful retreat, and I was eager to wander through its lush greenery.

The drive to Þrastaskógur was scenic, with rolling hills and glimpses of the Icelandic countryside. As I entered the forest, I was immediately struck by the tranquility. The well-marked trails invited exploration, and I chose a path that meandered alongside the river. The air was filled with the scent of birch trees, and the sunlight filtered through the leaves, creating a magical atmosphere. I even spotted a few birds, their songs adding to the serenity.

I spent a couple of hours wandering through Þrastaskógur, losing myself in its embrace. It was the perfect antidote to the sometimes overwhelming grandeur of Iceland's landscapes. Sometimes, it's the quiet, unassuming places that leave the biggest impression.

As the afternoon wore on, my stomach started to rumble. It was time for lunch, and Kjarr Restaurant was calling my name. Located near Kirkjubæjarklaustur, it promised a taste of local flavors, and I was eager to experience it.

The drive to Kjarr took me through more of Iceland's stunning scenery. Upon arriving, I was greeted by a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with tempting options. I decided on the soup of the day, eager to try a traditional Icelandic recipe. It was hearty and flavorful, a perfect representation of the region's culinary heritage.

With a satisfied belly, I continued my exploration, making a brief stop at Skogafoss Bistro Bar. I didn't have a full meal, but I did indulge in a local beer, soaking in the views of the majestic Skógafoss waterfall. The bistro had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and I could easily see myself spending an evening there.

Finally, as the day drew to a close, it was time for dinner. SVO Restaurant & Bar in Hvolsvöllur was my chosen destination. This restaurant was known for its blend of Icelandic and European cuisine, and I was curious to see what they had to offer.

SVO Restaurant & Bar did not disappoint. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu was filled with creative dishes. I opted for one of their seafood dishes, eager to taste the fresh catches from local waters. It was expertly prepared and bursting with flavor, a perfect end to a day of culinary exploration.

As I sit here now, reflecting on the day, I'm filled with gratitude. Þórsmörk has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding you of the simple beauty that exists in the world. Tomorrow is my last day here, and I plan to make the most of it.

I'll start with breakfast at Volcano Huts Húsadalur before heading out to explore the area around the huts. I am also planning to visit the Skógar Museum, hoping to delve deeper into the region's history and culture. A hearty lunch at Restaurant Minilik is also on the cards, before rounding off the day with a farewell dinner at Ingólfsskáli Viking Restaurant. Before heading back to Reykjavik, I intend to pick up a souvenir or two at Icewear / Vík Wool. It's going to be a busy day, but I'm determined to soak in every last moment of this incredible adventure.

Even though Liam isn't here with me on this trip, I feel like I'm carrying a piece of him in my heart. His adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors have always inspired me, and I know he would have loved exploring Þórsmörk with me. Maybe we'll come back together someday, and I can show him all the hidden gems I've discovered.

For now, though, I'll cherish these memories and continue to share my experiences with you, hoping to inspire your own adventures. Goodnight from Þórsmörk, and stay tuned for my final dispatch from this magical land !
