A Day of Desert Magic

Today was everything I dreamed of and more. The Sahara has a way of seeping into your soul, and I felt it profoundly today. From the moment the sun peeked over the horizon, painting the dunes in hues of gold and rose, I knew it would be a day etched in my memory forever. It’s a landscape that demands to be photographed, yet the camera can only capture a fraction of its true essence.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Berbere Palace Hotel Merzouga. The spread was a delightful mix of traditional Moroccan fare – fresh bread, olives, cheese, and of course, the ever-present mint tea. The hotel itself seemed like an oasis, a welcome respite from the vast expanse of sand that awaited. It was a perfect spot to fuel up before diving headfirst into the day’s adventures.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out for the Merzouga desert experience. The air was crisp and cool, a welcome change from the warmer temperatures I had anticipated. November in Merzouga is proving to be quite pleasant, with daytime temperatures hovering around 22-24°C. The forecast predicted clear skies, perfect for capturing the play of light and shadow on the dunes.

I opted for a camel trek, a quintessential Sahara experience. My camel, a gentle giant named Omar, was surprisingly comfortable, and as we swayed rhythmically across the sand, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The silence was broken only by the soft padding of Omar’s feet and the occasional call of our Berber guide. It was meditative, allowing me to truly connect with the landscape.

The desert is a blank canvas, waiting for the sun to paint its masterpiece.

The Berber Camp Merzouga was my next stop, a cluster of traditional tents nestled amidst the dunes. I was immediately struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Berber people. They welcomed me with open arms, offering sweet mint tea and sharing stories of their nomadic life. The camp was simple yet comfortable, a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern amenities.

Lunch was at Cafe Restaurant Itran, a local gem known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I indulged in a tagine, a slow-cooked stew of meat and vegetables, infused with aromatic spices. It was a culinary delight, a true taste of Morocco. The cafe itself was cozy and inviting, a perfect spot to relax and soak in the local atmosphere. I overheard some other travelers discussing desert trips they had booked through the cafe, but based on some online reviews, it seems experiences can vary.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn to the towering dunes that surround Merzouga. I climbed to the summit of one, the sand giving way beneath my feet with each step. The view from the top was breathtaking – a vast expanse of undulating sand, stretching as far as the eye could see. I spent hours simply sitting there, watching the sun slowly descend, casting long shadows across the landscape. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the beauty and power of nature.

For dinner, I ventured to Restaurant & Cafe Zaid Merzouga, another local favorite. The atmosphere was lively, filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation. I opted for a traditional Berber dish, a hearty stew of meat and vegetables, cooked in a clay pot over an open fire. It was a rustic and flavorful meal, a perfect end to a perfect day.

As darkness fell, I made my way to Riad Tighmart Merzouga, a charming bar known for its tranquil atmosphere. I sipped on a refreshing drink, gazing up at the star-studded sky. The desert sky is like nothing else I’ve ever seen, an endless expanse of twinkling lights. It was a magical moment, a perfect way to end the day.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I spent some time chatting with the locals at the Riad. They shared stories of their life in the desert, their traditions, and their hopes for the future. I learned so much about the Berber culture, their resilience, and their deep connection to the land. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the importance of cultural exchange and understanding.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit more of the Merzouga Desert and embark on a Sahara Safari adventure. I’m excited to explore more of this incredible landscape and capture its beauty through my lens. I also intend to do some shopping at Dépôt Nomade. Hopefully, I will find some unique souvenirs to take back home. I need to remember to pick up a portable solar charger as I had forgotten that! I’m also regretting not packing extra memory cards.

I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. The Sahara has a way of surprising you, of revealing its hidden treasures when you least expect it. I’m ready to embrace whatever adventures await, to immerse myself in the beauty and culture of this magical place.

As I drift off to sleep tonight, I’m filled with gratitude for this incredible experience. The Sahara has touched my heart in a profound way, and I know that I will carry its spirit with me long after I leave. It’s a place that reminds you of the simple things in life, the beauty of nature, the importance of human connection. It’s a place that makes you feel alive.

I'm also reminded of Liam back in Canmore. I know he would have loved to experience this with me. Perhaps one day we'll return together, and he can see the magic of the Sahara for himself. But for now, I'll continue to soak in every moment of this solo adventure, knowing that I'm creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Goodnight from the Sahara.
