A Day of Discovery in the Desert Heart
Today marked the seventh day of my solo photography journey in the Merzouga Region, and it was all about immersing myself in the local culture and flavors. I ventured beyond the dunes to connect with the people and uncover the hidden gems of this desert landscape. It was a day of exploration, from engaging with local tour companies to discovering unique fossils and minerals.
My morning started with a hearty breakfast at CAFE RESTAURANT TENERE. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of Moroccan pastries. I savored each bite, knowing I needed the energy for the day ahead. The cafe was a cozy haven, a perfect spot to gather my thoughts and plan my itinerary. I overheard snippets of conversations in French, Arabic, and Berber, a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry that defines this region. It made me think of Liam back home, and I wished he could experience this with me. He would have loved the strong coffee and the lively atmosphere. I made a mental note to bring him back here someday.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore the tour options in Merzouga. I had bookmarked See Around Morocco and Mouhou Tours Company - Morocco Tours and decided to visit both to get a feel for their offerings. See Around Morocco struck me as a well-organized outfit. Their commitment to providing authentic and enriching experiences was evident. They highlighted immersive cultural tours and desert adventures that resonated with my desire to connect deeply with the region. I was particularly drawn to their focus on sustainable tourism, aligning perfectly with my values.

Next, I ventured over to Mouhou Tours Company. Their office buzzed with activity, guides animatedly discussing itineraries with eager travelers. Mouhou Tours seemed to specialize in customized itineraries, promising a unique Berber experience. Camel trekking and cultural immersion in Moroccan villages were among their popular offerings. I was impressed by their flexibility and willingness to tailor tours to individual preferences. Both companies seemed to have good reviews and testimonials from previous travelers. It was reassuring to know that others had positive experiences exploring the desert with these local experts. I gathered brochures and contact information, knowing I would need to carefully consider my options for the coming days. Perhaps tomorrow I would book something with Merzouga Desert Tours, according to my itinerary.

For lunch, I stumbled upon Snack le cedre, a charming eatery known for its delicious local cuisine. The aroma of spices and grilling meats wafted through the air, drawing me in. I ordered a traditional tagine, a slow-cooked stew with tender meat and vegetables, infused with aromatic herbs and spices. Each bite was an explosion of flavor, a testament to the culinary artistry of the region. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home. I savored every moment, knowing this was more than just a meal; it was a cultural experience.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at DRISS FOSSILS AND MINERALS SHOP. The shop was a treasure trove of geological wonders, showcasing the region's rich natural history. I marveled at the intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the fossils, each one a window into a bygone era. Driss, the shop owner, was a wealth of knowledge, sharing fascinating stories about the origins and significance of each specimen. I purchased a small fossil as a memento of my time in Merzouga, a tangible reminder of the ancient wonders that lie beneath the sands.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Resturant Nora for dinner. The restaurant exuded a warm and inviting ambiance, with soft lighting and traditional Moroccan décor. I ordered a couscous dish, a staple of Moroccan cuisine, consisting of fluffy semolina grains topped with a medley of vegetables and tender meat. The flavors were delicate yet satisfying, a perfect ending to a day of culinary exploration. As I dined, I reflected on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to connect with the local culture and discover the hidden gems of Merzouga.

Tomorrow, I am scheduled to go on Merzouga Desert Tours and visit the Magic luxury camp. I anticipate more exciting adventures and opportunities to capture the beauty of the Sahara through my lens. I might even stop at Merzouga sky camp for a drink, if time permits. I am also hoping for more clear skies, so I can try out the portable solar charger that I forgot to pack.
Each day here brings new experiences and perspectives, reinforcing my love for solo travel and the freedom it provides. I am eager to see what tomorrow holds, knowing that the desert always has more secrets to reveal.
