A Day of Motion in Kyoto

Today was all about movement, from the make-believe action on a studio lot to the real-life hustle and bustle of railway history. Kyoto, as I'm discovering, is a city that keeps you on your toes, always offering something new and exciting around every corner. I was eager to explore with Olivia and Ethan, and today's itinerary promised a blend of entertainment and education that I knew we'd all enjoy.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. It was a great start to the day, fueling us up for the adventures ahead. I always appreciate a good, solid breakfast; it sets the tone for the day, and Masayoshi didn't disappoint. Olivia enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Ethan opted for something a bit more familiar – grilled fish with rice. As for me, I decided to try their special omelet, which was fluffy and flavorful.

After breakfast, we headed to Kyoto Station Daikaidan (Great Staircase). I had read about its impressive design and the panoramic views it offered, and I wanted to experience it firsthand. The Great Staircase is an architectural marvel. The kids were amazed by the sheer size of the staircase. The station itself is a hub of activity, a place where modernity and tradition meet. We spent some time just watching people, soaking in the atmosphere of this bustling transportation hub. Ethan, of course, was fascinated by the trains coming and going, pointing out the different types and colors. Olivia, ever the photographer, snapped away, capturing the essence of the station's vibrant energy. We climbed to the top, taking in the views of the city skyline. It's amazing how something as simple as a staircase can become a destination in itself. I made a mental note to come back in the evening to see the light show that illuminates the steps.

Next on our list was Toei Kyoto Studio Park. This place was a real treat, especially for Ethan. Imagine stepping onto a movie set where samurai dramas are filmed – that's exactly what it felt like! The park recreates the Edo period with incredible detail. We wandered through the streets, peeking into shops and houses that looked like they were straight out of a historical film. Ethan was particularly thrilled by the ninja show. He watched, wide-eyed, as the performers demonstrated their skills, flipping and twirling with swords. Olivia and I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes exhibits, learning about the history of Japanese film and television. It was fascinating to see how these productions are made, from the costumes to the special effects. I even tried my hand at sword fighting, with Ethan cheering me on. Let's just say I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon! We also had the chance to dress up in traditional costumes, which was a lot of fun. Ethan chose a samurai outfit, while Olivia opted for a beautiful kimono. I, of course, had to try on a magistrate's garb. We took plenty of photos, creating memories that we'll cherish for years to come. The park was more than just a movie set; it was an immersive experience that transported us back in time. It reminded me of my days growing up in Show Low, Arizona, watching old Westerns and dreaming of being a cowboy. The Toei Kyoto Studio Park brought those childhood fantasies to life in a whole new way.

For lunch, we stopped at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. This restaurant is known for its steaks, and it was a welcome change from the traditional Japanese cuisine we had been eating. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I ordered a ribeye steak, while Olivia went for the sirloin. Ethan, surprisingly, also chose a steak – a smaller cut, of course. The steaks were cooked to perfection, tender and juicy. It was a satisfying meal that left us feeling energized for the rest of the day.

Our final stop of the day was the Kyoto Railway Museum. As a bit of a history buff, I was particularly excited about this one. I’ve always been fascinated by trains, and the Kyoto Railway Museum did not disappoint. The museum houses an impressive collection of locomotives and railway cars, showcasing the history of Japan's railway system. Ethan was in heaven, running from one exhibit to another, marveling at the size and power of the trains. We climbed aboard some of the trains, exploring the interiors and imagining what it must have been like to travel on them. The highlight for me was the steam locomotive exhibit. There's something magical about these old machines, with their intricate designs and their powerful presence. I could almost hear the whistle blowing and feel the ground shaking as they chugged along the tracks. Olivia, while not as enthusiastic about trains as Ethan and I, appreciated the historical significance of the museum. She enjoyed reading the exhibits and learning about the impact of the railway on Japanese society. The museum was a great way to end our day, providing a blend of education and entertainment that we all enjoyed.

For dinner, we had reservations at Kikunoi Roan, a renowned kaiseki restaurant. This was a special treat, and I was looking forward to experiencing the art of Japanese haute cuisine. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a serene atmosphere that immediately put us at ease. The meal was a multi-course masterpiece, each dish carefully crafted and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle and complex, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. Olivia and I savored each bite, appreciating the artistry and the attention to detail. Ethan, while not as adventurous in his food choices, found a few dishes that he enjoyed. The staff were attentive and accommodating, making sure that we had a memorable dining experience.

After dinner, Olivia and I decided to check out the nightlife scene. We dropped Ethan off at the hotel, promising him a fun day tomorrow, and headed to WORLD KYOTO, a popular nightclub. I have to admit, I was a bit hesitant at first. I haven't been to a nightclub in years, and I wasn't sure if I still had it in me. But Olivia convinced me to give it a try, and I'm glad she did. The club was lively and energetic, with a mix of locals and tourists. The music was a mix of techno and house, and the dance floor was packed. We grabbed a couple of drinks and joined the crowd, letting loose and having fun. It was a great way to end the day, a chance to unwind and forget about our worries. The club was definitely a change of pace from the rest of our day, but it was a welcome one. It reminded me of my younger days, when I used to go out dancing with my friends in Show Low. It was good to know that I could still cut a rug, even at 42.

As I sit here writing this, I'm exhausted but content. Today was a whirlwind of activity, a mix of culture, history, and entertainment. Kyoto continues to surprise me, revealing new facets of its character with each passing day. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that we'll cherish forever.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Fushimi Inari Taisha, with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountainside. I’ve heard it’s a breathtaking sight, and I’m eager to capture its beauty with my camera. We’ll also explore the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, hoping to find some serenity amidst the bustling city. And if time allows, we’ll visit Eikandō Temple, known for its stunning autumn foliage – though I imagine it's still beautiful even in late April. It’s another day packed with adventure, and I can’t wait to see what Kyoto has in store for us.

For now, though, it’s time to rest and recharge. Good night from Kyoto!
