A Day of Discovery and Delight

Today was all about diving deeper into what makes Yakushima tick. It's easy to get swept up in the stunning natural beauty, but I wanted to understand the island's history and culture a bit better. Plus, I had some fantastic meals planned, and who am I to argue with a good culinary adventure?

My day started with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's funny, I usually try to avoid airport food, but this place came highly recommended, and I figured, why not start the day with some local flavors ? I wasn't disappointed. It's a great spot for travelers to enjoy authentic Japanese regional cuisine, emphasizing fresh ingredients from the surrounding nature. The friendly staff shared their knowledge about the local dishes, making the experience even more special. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I even took a moment to jot down some notes in my travel journal, capturing the essence of the morning before heading out.

Next on the agenda was the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. This museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of Yakushima, highlighting the island’s traditions, folklore, and historical events. The Yakushima Town History and Folk Museum is located close to the Miyanoura River. It can easily be visited while waiting for a boat to Kagoshima or Tanegashima. The single-story exhibition hall displays a variety of exhibits explaining the local history and culture of Yakushima. There are original Edo Period documents, wood and wicker folk tools, handicrafts, masks, pottery, and festival items on display. Outside the main building is a reconstruction of a rural house where roof tiles known as hiragi were made. There is also a section dedicated to the nearby, volcanic island of Kuchinoerabu Island. The exhibits are labeled in Japanese, but visitors are supplied with a returnable laminated sheet in English. There are also exhibits on Yakushima's native monkeys and deer, sub-species of their larger cousins on the main islands, including a wooden monkey trap. Of particular interest were the exhibits relating to festivals on the island, including costumes and a rice straw rope used in a tug-of-war festival between different villages.

As I wandered through the exhibits, I was struck by how much the island's history is intertwined with its natural environment. From the traditional tools used to harvest yakusugi cedar to the fishing implements used to catch flying fish, it was clear that the people of Yakushima have always had a deep connection to the land and sea. The museum provided a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of the islanders, from the Jomon period to the present day. There were displays of wooden tools, handicrafts, masks, and pottery, each telling a story of the island's past.

The more I learn about Yakushima, the more I appreciate its unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

After immersing myself in history, I headed over to the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. The Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center is located near Miyanoura Port. This center exhibits displays along an upward-sloping route that represents the transition from the subtropical coast to the cooler mountains. The displays are divided into sections on water, ocean, villages, forests, and mountain faith. A large wide-screen theater brings to life the island's natural environment. The featured film, Yakushima, Symphony of Forest and Water, is shown in Japanese multiple times a day. Simple English signage and an English-language guide (walkie-talkie pen) are available. It’s a great place to get a sense of the island’s unique ecosystem and learn about the efforts being made to preserve it. The exhibits were thoughtfully curated, and I particularly enjoyed the wide-screen theater that brought the island's natural environment to life. It was like taking a virtual hike through the forests and mountains, all from the comfort of a theater seat.

By this point, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I made my way to At Pesca for lunch. This spot had been recommended for its tasty and quick tempura meals, and I was definitely in the mood for something satisfying. At Pesca is a charming restaurant with island beach vibes, offering a variety of delicious Japanese dishes like chimaki, musubi, bentos, and local juices. The decor is inviting with a Hawaii theme, and the friendly staff create a sense of peace and relaxation for visitors. I opted for the vegetable tempura bowl, which was indeed great and filling. The atmosphere was cozy, with awesome Hawaiian music playing in the background. They also offer takeout containers, perfect for taking your meal on the trails.

With a full belly and a happy heart, I decided to take a leisurely stroll through the town of Miyanoura. I love wandering through local shops and soaking up the atmosphere of a place. I stumbled upon a small art gallery featuring the work of local artists, and I spent a pleasant hour admiring the paintings and sculptures. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding – discovering hidden gems and connecting with the local culture on a personal level.

As evening approached, I made my way to Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter for dinner. The name alone intrigued me, and I was eager to see what culinary delights awaited. The restaurant had been praised for its fantastic food and unique dining experience. I settled in for a memorable meal. I decided to be adventurous and try some local specialties that I hadn't encountered before. The chef recommended a dish featuring flying fish, which is a Yakushima delicacy. It was unlike anything I'd ever tasted – a delicate, slightly sweet flavor with a satisfyingly crispy texture. The warm tofu was especially comforting. The staff were incredibly friendly and made me feel right at home. It truly felt like a once-in-a-lifetime encounter, a perfect end to a day of exploration.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Fisherman's Bar NINA. I'm not usually one for bars, but I'd heard that this place was a local institution, known for its fresh seafood and lively atmosphere. Fisherman's Bar Nina is known for serving locally sourced dishes made with fresh fish caught by the chef himself, as well as ingredients from Yakushima. I figured it would be a good opportunity to mingle with the locals and get a sense of the island's nightlife. The bar was buzzing with energy, and I struck up a conversation with a friendly fisherman who shared stories about his life on the island. I enjoyed a local beer and soaked in the atmosphere, feeling grateful for the experiences I'd had throughout the day.

As I walked back to my accommodation under the starry sky, I reflected on everything I'd seen and done. From the historical insights at the museums to the culinary delights at the restaurants, today had been a true immersion into the heart and soul of Yakushima. It's amazing how much you can learn and experience in a single day when you open yourself up to the possibilities. I felt a deep sense of connection to this island and its people, and I knew that the memories I'd made today would stay with me long after I left.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore more of Yakushima's natural beauty, with a visit to the botanic gardens and a hike up Mt. Miyanoura. I'm excited to see what new adventures await, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible island. I'm also looking forward to trying the local breakfast at Yakushima No Kokusan Tatami Nakajima Tatami Shop, having lunch at Iso no Kaori, and ending the day with dinner at Shiosai.
