Today was all about immersing ourselves in the stunning natural landscapes that Zao Onsen has to offer. With Lena, Sophie, and me ready for a day of exploration, we set out to discover the wonders of Zaō Quasi-National Park and the scenic Zao Echo Line. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, delicious food, and a taste of local culture that made our family adventure even more memorable.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Shiba Mama no Omise. I had heard so many good things about this place, especially their vegetarian options, and I was eager to try it out. It’s always a pleasant surprise to find a restaurant that caters so well to different dietary preferences, and Shiba Mama's certainly didn't disappoint. The cozy atmosphere and the friendly staff made us feel right at home.

I opted for the vegetable curry udon, while Lena chose the vegetable full toast sand. Sophie, of course, went for something simple, but even she couldn't resist trying a bit of our meals. Everything was incredibly fresh and flavorful, a testament to Shiba Mama’s commitment to using local ingredients. I even managed to chat with Shiba Mama herself, a warm and welcoming woman who shared stories about her restaurant and the local area. It felt like we were getting a true taste of the community, something I always appreciate when traveling.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we headed towards Zaō Quasi-National Park. The park is a sprawling expanse of natural beauty, encompassing mountains, forests, and the famous Okama Crater. Given Sophie's boundless energy, I knew she would love running around and exploring. The Quasi-National Park spans across both the Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures. The park’s diverse landscapes provide a haven for various wildlife and vibrant alpine flora, making it a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts.
As we drove into the park, the scenery transformed into a lush, green paradise. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city. We parked the car and decided to take a leisurely stroll along one of the many trails. The park offers trails for all levels of hikers, so we chose one that was easy enough for Sophie to manage. Along the way, we marveled at the towering trees, the vibrant wildflowers, and the occasional glimpses of wildlife. Sophie was particularly thrilled when she spotted a deer grazing in the distance. She was so excited that Lena had to calm her down to avoid scaring the animal away. I managed to snap a few photos, hoping to capture the serene beauty of the moment.
Nature's beauty is a gift that enriches our lives, offering moments of peace and wonder that stay with us forever.
After our walk, we drove along the Zao Echo Line. This scenic mountain road stretches for 26 kilometers, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. The Echo Line is a mountain road that traverses the Zao mountain range from east to west. It was opened in November 1962 and connects Zao Town in Miyagi Prefecture with Kaminoyama City in Yamagata Prefecture. The drive was exhilarating, with winding roads and panoramic vistas at every turn. We stopped at Takimidai, an observatory along the way, to get a better view of the Sankai and Fudo waterfalls. The waterfalls cascaded down the mountainside, creating a stunning spectacle that left us in awe. The Zao Echo Line offers refreshing views of the surrounding mountain landscapes any time of year.

Lena, always the practical one, made sure we took plenty of breaks to avoid car sickness, especially for Sophie. We stopped at a few viewpoints, letting Sophie stretch her legs and burn off some energy. She loved throwing pebbles into the nearby streams and chasing butterflies. It was heartwarming to see her so carefree and happy, surrounded by nature.
By lunchtime, we were all quite hungry. We decided to stop at Touen for a bite. This restaurant came highly recommended for its local cuisine, and we were eager to try it out. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic charm, and the menu featured a variety of dishes made with ingredients sourced from the region. I opted for the Yamagata beef yakiniku, while Lena chose the Inaniwa Udon. Sophie, predictably, wanted something simple, so we ordered her a bowl of rice with some grilled chicken. The beef was tender and flavorful, and the udon was perfectly cooked. Even Sophie enjoyed her simple meal, devouring every last grain of rice.

After lunch, we continued our drive along the Zao Echo Line, soaking in the stunning scenery. We eventually made our way back to Zao Onsen, feeling refreshed and invigorated by our time in nature. Before heading back to Der Barte, we decided to stop at stand MY for a quick drink. This bar was known for its relaxed atmosphere and its selection of local craft beers, something that always piques my interest. We settled in at a table and ordered a couple of beers and a juice box for Sophie. The beer was crisp and refreshing, the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

As we sipped our drinks, we chatted about our favorite moments from the day. Sophie loved seeing the deer in Zaō Quasi-National Park, while Lena enjoyed the scenic drive along the Zao Echo Line. For me, it was the combination of everything – the stunning landscapes, the delicious food, and the quality time spent with my family. It was a day that reminded me of the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life.
For dinner, we decided to try Izakaya Kiwa. This lively spot was perfect for experiencing the local nightlife and cuisine. The atmosphere was bustling, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the variety of small plates and drinks. We ordered a selection of dishes, including yakitori, sashimi, and some local sake. The food was delicious, and the sake was smooth and flavorful. Sophie enjoyed the yakitori, while Lena and I savored the sashimi and sake. It was a wonderful way to immerse ourselves in the local culture and enjoy the vibrant energy of Zao Onsen.

Before I turn in for the night, I wanted to share a thought that’s been on my mind throughout the day. It’s something that Shiba Mama said to us during breakfast, a simple yet profound observation about the importance of slowing down and appreciating the present moment. In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush of daily life, to forget to savor the small joys and simple pleasures that surround us. But here in Zao Onsen, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the warmth of the local people, I’m reminded of the importance of being present, of fully experiencing each moment as it unfolds. It’s a lesson I hope to carry with me long after we leave this beautiful place.
