A Fond Farewell

As our two-week adventure in Zao Onsen draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared as a family. From the soothing hot springs to the stunning landscapes, this trip has been a wonderful blend of relaxation and exploration. Today, our final day, was no exception, filled with cultural discoveries and delightful culinary experiences.

The day started with a hearty breakfast at Unite Cafe. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Lena enjoyed a Western-style pastry and coffee. Sophie, of course, went straight for the pancakes. Unite Cafe had a cozy atmosphere, and it was a great way to fuel up for our day of exploration.

Our first stop was the Birthplace of Figure Skating in Japan, Goshikinuma. As a Canadian, I have a deep appreciation for ice sports, so visiting this historical site was particularly special. It’s amazing to think that this serene pond was where figure skating in Japan began. Sophie was fascinated by the monument dedicated to the sport's origins, and we spent some time reading about the history and the skaters who trained there.

Next on our itinerary was The Miyagi Museum of Art in Sendai. The museum boasts a diverse collection, with a focus on works related to the Miyagi Prefecture and the Tohoku region. I was particularly drawn to the works by local artists from the Meiji period to the present day. Lena, with her background as a kindergarten teacher, appreciated the children's art workshops that the museum offers. Sophie enjoyed wandering through the sculpture garden, admiring the various installations. The Miyagi Museum of Art provided a rich cultural experience for all of us.

For lunch, we decided to try Sushi Kiraku in Yamagata. This restaurant is known for its fresh, high-quality sushi, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. I ordered a selection of nigiri and sashimi, while Lena opted for a vegetarian sushi set. Sophie, surprisingly, enjoyed the tamago (egg) sushi. The sushi was expertly prepared, and the fish was incredibly fresh.

After lunch, we made a stop at Yoneya Department Store. I was on the hunt for some last-minute souvenirs, and Yoneya had a great selection of local crafts and delicacies. I picked up some Yamagata cherries, a few traditional sweets, and a beautiful ceramic sake set. Lena found some lovely textiles, and Sophie chose a cute Kokeshi doll. It was the perfect place to find those special mementos to remind us of our time in Zao Onsen.

As the day wound down, we treated ourselves to a final dinner at Zaonoie. This charming ramen restaurant is known for its hearty and flavorful dishes. I ordered their signature ramen, while Lena tried a vegetarian option. Sophie enjoyed a smaller bowl of noodles with some gyoza. The warm and inviting atmosphere of Zaonoie was the perfect setting for our last meal in Zao Onsen.

Reflecting on our time here, I realize how much Zao Onsen has offered us. The hot springs have been incredibly relaxing, especially after long days of exploring. Sophie has absolutely loved the onsen experience, and it’s been wonderful to see her embrace this part of Japanese culture. The landscapes have been breathtaking, from the lush greenery to the misty mountain views. We’ve taken countless photos, trying to capture the beauty of this place, but I know that the memories we’ve made here will last a lifetime.

One of the highlights of our trip has been the opportunity to slow down and spend quality time together as a family. With our busy lives back in Heidelberg, it’s not always easy to find the time to connect. But here in Zao Onsen, we’ve been able to disconnect from the distractions of modern life and focus on what truly matters: each other.

I’ve also appreciated the chance to immerse myself in Japanese culture. From the traditional ryokan experience at Der Barte to the local cuisine, I’ve learned so much about the customs and traditions of this fascinating country. Lena, with her German background, has also enjoyed experiencing a culture so different from her own. And Sophie, well, she’s been like a little sponge, absorbing everything around her.

Of course, no trip is without its challenges. Forgetting the power adapter was a bit of a hiccup, but we managed to find a replacement in Yamagata [TripDetails]. And the language barrier has been a bit tricky at times, but we’ve found that a smile and a little bit of Japanese go a long way.

As we prepare to leave Zao Onsen tomorrow, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude. This trip has been a wonderful reminder of the importance of family, the beauty of nature, and the richness of different cultures. I’m so glad that we decided to come here, and I know that we’ll be talking about our Zao Onsen adventure for years to come.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home to Heidelberg [TripDetails]. It’s always bittersweet to leave a place that you’ve grown to love, but I’m also excited to return to our familiar routines and share our experiences with friends and family.

Before I sign off, I want to share a few final thoughts for anyone planning a trip to Zao Onsen. First, be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. There’s so much to explore on foot, and you’ll want to be prepared. Second, don’t be afraid to try new things. Whether it’s soaking in a hot spring or sampling a local delicacy, embrace the unfamiliar and open yourself up to new experiences. And finally, remember to slow down and savor the moment. Zao Onsen is a place of tranquility and beauty, and it’s best enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
