A Day of Serenity and Culinary Delights
Today was all about embracing the heart of Zao Onsen. It was a day dedicated to soothing my muscles in the famed hot springs and indulging in the local culinary scene. Lena, Sophie, and I were eager to experience the traditional Japanese lifestyle that this mountain village offered.
The morning started with a hearty Japanese breakfast at Jupeer. Sophie was particularly excited about the miso soup, which she has come to love. I enjoyed the grilled fish and rice, fueling up for a day of exploration and relaxation. Lena appreciated the variety of the spread, noting how fresh and locally sourced everything tasted. Eating at Jupeer felt like a warm welcome to the day, setting a positive tone for our adventures.

After breakfast, we ventured to Zao Onsen Yutabiya TAKAYUDO. This wasn't just a shop; it was an experience. It was a hot spring coordination shop” offering a delightful array of hot spring-related goods. Lena was immediately drawn to the stylish and practical items, such as the comfortable cotton 'hot spring monpe' pants, perfect for relaxing after a bath. Sophie was captivated by the Marukoro-chan goods, miniature kokeshi dolls with adorable designs. I found myself intrigued by the original blended coffee, a collaboration with Tsuki Café in Yamagata City. We picked up a few souvenirs, promising ourselves to enjoy a cup of that coffee back in Heidelberg, reminiscing about our time in Zao Onsen. This place had a wide selection of items to make your stay at Zao Onsen a pleasure.

There’s something profoundly relaxing about immersing oneself in the sulfuric waters of a Japanese onsen, feeling the stress melt away with each passing moment.
The experience was nothing short of magical. The outdoor bath, surrounded by lush greenery, felt like a hidden oasis. The water, sourced directly from the spring, was rich in minerals and had a distinctive sulfuric scent, which is said to rejuvenate the skin. Sophie, initially hesitant about the strong smell, quickly warmed up to the idea once she was in the water, giggling as she splashed around with Lena. I appreciated the spaciousness of the men’s bath, which featured two rock baths. The indoor bath, fragrant with cypress, offered a serene escape from the summer heat. It was a truly relaxing experience, and I could feel the tension easing from my muscles.
For lunch, we decided to try Sugenoya, a charming Japanese restaurant known for its traditional culinary practices and local ingredients. The restaurant had a cozy and elegant ambiance, perfect for a family meal. We ordered a variety of dishes, including sushi, sashimi, and noodle dishes, each showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Japan. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the presentation was exquisite. Sophie particularly enjoyed the sushi, while Lena savored the delicate flavors of the sashimi. I opted for a hearty bowl of ramen, which was both filling and flavorful. The meal was a delightful exploration of Japanese cuisine, leaving us feeling satisfied and content.

In the late afternoon, while Lena and Sophie took a nap back at Der Barte, I decided to explore a bit of Zao Onsen's nightlife. I ventured to stand MY, a local bar known for its laid-back atmosphere. It was a small, intimate space with a friendly bartender who greeted me with a warm smile. I ordered a local craft beer, eager to sample the flavors of the region. As I sipped my beer, I chatted with a few locals, learning about the history and culture of Zao Onsen. They shared stories about the snow monsters in winter and the vibrant summer festivals. It was a great way to connect with the community and gain a deeper understanding of this charming mountain village.

For dinner, we chose Hachiman, a yakiniku restaurant located on Takayu Street. This cozy spot is known for showcasing Yamagata's famous ingredients, including Zao beef, lamb, and Yamagata pork. We ordered a selection of meats and vegetables, grilling them at our table. The Zao beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. Sophie enjoyed grilling her own pieces of pork, carefully watching them cook to perfection. Lena appreciated the cozy atmosphere and the friendly service. Hachiman provided a delightful and interactive dining experience, making it a memorable end to our culinary journey in Zao Onsen.

As the day drew to a close, we took a leisurely stroll through the village, enjoying the cool evening air. The streets were quiet and peaceful, with the gentle sounds of the nearby river creating a soothing ambiance. We stopped by a local shop to pick up some snacks for the next day, including some delicious cherry-flavored treats, a specialty of Yamagata.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much we had immersed ourselves in the local culture. From the rejuvenating hot springs to the delicious cuisine and the friendly locals, Zao Onsen had captured our hearts. It was a day of serenity, culinary delights, and cultural immersion, leaving us with cherished memories that we would carry with us long after we left.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Zaō Quasi-National Park and visit Ginzan Onsen. I'm particularly excited about Ginzan Onsen, as I've heard it's like stepping back in time with its traditional architecture and charming atmosphere. Sophie is eager to see the park and hopefully spot some wildlife. Lena is looking forward to more scenic views and relaxing moments. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery in this beautiful part of Japan.
