Day 6: Spiritual Heights and Marsh Melodies: Discovering Zao's Hidden Gems
Explore Zao Onsen's spiritual side at Zaojizoson and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Iroha Marsh. A day of reflection and wonder.
Finding Serenity in Zao's Embrace
Today was a day of exploration and reflection here in Zao Onsen. We ventured beyond the hot springs and ski slopes to discover the spiritual and natural heart of this region. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, tranquil moments, and a deeper connection to the Japanese landscape.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Jupeer. Fuelling up with a mix of familiar and new tastes is always a good way to start the day. Sophie, of course, was most excited about the pastries, while Lena and I enjoyed the more traditional Japanese options. With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set out for Zaojizoson.

Reaching Zaojizoson involved a scenic ride, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. As we ascended, the air grew crisper, carrying with it a sense of anticipation. Zaojizoson is a Jizo statue enshrined on Mount Zao. It took over 30 years to complete, becoming a center of faith and protection from disaster since 1775. The statue is one of the Three Divinities of Zao.
The statue itself was an imposing figure, standing tall against the backdrop of the mountains. The serene ambiance made it an unforgettable sight. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to appreciate the blend of nature and spirituality that defines this place. Lena lit a small incense stick, and we all took a moment to offer a silent prayer for health and happiness. Sophie, ever curious, peppered us with questions about the statue and its significance, which gave us a chance to share a bit about Japanese culture and beliefs.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the quietest moments of reflection.
After soaking in the spiritual atmosphere of Zaojizoson, we descended back down to explore the natural beauty of Iroha Marsh.

The bus ride from Zao Onsen to the marsh was short, about 20 minutes. From the bus stop, it was a pleasant 10-minute walk to the marsh entrance.
Iroha Marsh is a picturesque escape into nature, offering stunning landscapes and vibrant wildlife. The well-maintained walking paths meandered through the marsh, allowing us to soak in the views and capture the rich biodiversity. The marsh was teeming with vibrant flora and fauna, a testament to the area's commitment to preserving its natural beauty.
Sophie was fascinated by the dragonflies and butterflies flitting among the reeds, while Lena and I appreciated the tranquility of the surroundings. We strolled along the wooden paths, stopping to admire the reflections in the water and listen to the gentle rustling of the wind through the marsh grasses. It was the perfect spot for meditation and relaxation, a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
For lunch, we stopped at Zaonoie.

It was a delightful experience, savoring local dishes while surrounded by the beauty of Zao. I tried their Yamagata beef, which was incredibly tender and flavorful. Lena opted for a vegetarian dish featuring local vegetables, and Sophie enjoyed a simple but satisfying bowl of udon noodles.
As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Kasheru, a cozy bar in Zao Onsen.

I decided to sample some local sake, while Lena enjoyed a cup of green tea. Sophie, of course, was treated to a special non-alcoholic beverage. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Zao Sky Cable Uwanodai Station and the Zao Super Slider. Sophie is already excited about the Super Slider, and I'm looking forward to the panoramic views from the Sky Cable. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.
Reflecting on today, I’m reminded of how travel isn’t just about seeing new places, but also about experiencing new perspectives. The blend of spiritual reflection at Zaojizoson and the natural immersion at Iroha Marsh offered a unique and profound experience. As someone who spends his days in a brewery, surrounded by the science of fermentation, it’s refreshing to connect with nature and history in such a tangible way. Lena, with her background as a kindergarten teacher, has a knack for finding educational moments in every experience, making our travels enriching for Sophie. These are the moments that make our family trips so special, creating memories that we’ll cherish long after we’ve returned to Heidelberg. The power adapter I forgot is still bugging me, but I'll get one soon enough.
