Day 14: Spiritual Retreat and Craft Exploration: A Day of Serenity in Sendai
Discover Sendai's hidden temple, immerse in traditional crafts, and savor local flavors—a perfect blend of culture and relaxation.
Finding Peace and Craft in Sendai
Today was a day of exploration and reflection, a chance to delve deeper into the cultural heart of the Sendai region. From serene temples to bustling craft villages, it was a day filled with new experiences and a deeper appreciation for Japanese traditions. Sophie was especially excited about the prospect of crafting something with her own hands, and Lena and I were keen to soak in the tranquility that this area is known for.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Jupeer, the hotel restaurant. After fueling up with a mix of Japanese and Western breakfast options, we set out for our first destination: Mitakisan Fudoin Temple.

Mitakisan Fudoin Temple: A Hidden Gem
Located in the heart of a busy shopping arcade, Mitakisan Fudoin Temple was a surprise. It was easy to miss, tucked away amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, but that's part of its charm. Dedicated to Fudo Myoo and known for enshrining Sendai Shiro, the god of business, the temple offered a peaceful escape. I remember reading about Sendai Shiro, a figure believed to bring good fortune to businesses, and it was fascinating to see his presence so revered here.
The temple itself was small but powerful, with locals quietly praying for good fortune. Sophie was intrigued by the incense and the gentle chanting, while Lena appreciated the contrast between the temple's serenity and the lively street outside. We took a moment to light some incense and offer our own prayers for continued health and happiness. It’s amazing how these little pockets of peace can be found even in the busiest of cities.

From the tranquility of the temple, we headed to the Akiu Traditional Craft Village, eager to immerse ourselves in the local arts.
Akiu Traditional Craft Village: A Celebration of Art
The Akiu Traditional Craft Village was a short bus ride from Sendai, nestled in a scenic area known for its natural beauty. The village is home to workshops showcasing various traditional crafts, from woodwork to textiles and Kokeshi dolls. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the modern city we had just left.
Our first stop was at a woodworking shop where we watched artisans creating intricate pieces using techniques passed down through generations. The level of detail and precision was astounding. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the process of carving wood into delicate shapes, and she peppered the craftsman with questions about his tools and techniques.
Next, we visited a Kokeshi doll workshop. These traditional wooden dolls are a symbol of the Tohoku region, and we learned about the different styles and the history behind them. Sophie was excited to try her hand at painting her own Kokeshi doll, carefully choosing colors and patterns to create a unique souvenir. Lena and I joined in, and soon we were all engrossed in our artistic endeavors. Sophie, of course, declared hers the best, a masterpiece worthy of display back in Heidelberg.
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.
We also explored a textile studio, where we saw artisans weaving beautiful fabrics using traditional looms. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors were stunning, and Lena, with her keen eye for design, was particularly impressed by the skill and artistry on display. She chatted with one of the weavers about the natural dyes used in the process, learning about the different plants and techniques used to create the rich hues.
Before leaving the village, we stopped at a small shop selling local crafts. We picked up a few souvenirs, including a hand-painted Kokeshi doll for Sophie and a beautiful woven scarf for Lena. I couldn’t resist buying a small wooden sake cup for myself, a reminder of our time in Akiu.

Jingisukan Lodge: A Culinary Delight
For lunch, we headed to Jingisukan Lodge, a restaurant known for its Jingisukan, a Mongolian-style grilled lamb dish. As a brewery technician, I appreciate the nuances of flavors, and this meal was no exception. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the grilling process added a delicious smoky char. We sat around the grill, cooking our own meat and vegetables, enjoying the interactive and communal dining experience. Sophie, surprisingly, enjoyed the lamb, declaring it even better than her favorite German sausages. Lena and I shared a bottle of local beer, a perfect complement to the savory flavors of the dish.

Zao Brewery: A Taste of Local Craft
After our delicious lunch, we decided to take a detour to Zao Brewery. Given my profession, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to sample some local craft beer. The brewery was located in a picturesque setting, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Yamagata region. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the brewery's offerings.
I ordered a flight of their beers, eager to taste the different styles and flavors. From light and refreshing lagers to rich and hoppy ales, each beer was expertly crafted and full of character. Lena, who usually prefers wine, even enjoyed a sip of the cherry ale, commenting on its fruity and refreshing taste. Sophie, of course, stuck to her apple juice, but she enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the brewery.
I chatted with the brewmaster about the local ingredients and the brewing process, learning about the unique techniques used to create their distinctive beers. It was fascinating to hear about their passion for their craft and their commitment to using local resources. I even picked up a few bottles to take back to Heidelberg, eager to share the taste of Zao with my friends and colleagues. I was hoping to find something similar to Redchurch Brewery's Boh Beh Zao, but settled for a pale ale instead.

Dinner at Hachiman: A Farewell Feast
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Hachiman for dinner. This restaurant came highly recommended for its traditional Japanese cuisine, and we were eager to experience another taste of local flavors. The restaurant was cozy and intimate, with a traditional Japanese decor that added to the ambiance.
We ordered a selection of dishes, including fresh sushi, grilled fish, and a hearty bowl of ramen. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Sophie, who is usually a picky eater, surprised us by trying everything on the table, even the seaweed salad. Lena and I savored each bite, appreciating the delicate balance of flavors and the artistry of the presentation.

Looking Ahead
As we head into our final day here in Zao Onsen, I am really looking forward to visiting the Birthplace of Figure Skating in Japan (Goshikinuma) and The Miyagi Museum of Art. I might even do a spot of shopping at the Yoneya Department Store before heading back to Germany. I am going to miss the food here, so I will make sure to try Unite Cafe for breakfast, Sushi Kiraku for lunch and Zaonoie for dinner.
Today was a day of contrasts, from the quiet serenity of Mitakisan Fudoin Temple to the bustling creativity of Akiu Traditional Craft Village and the delicious flavors of Jingisukan Lodge and Hachiman. It was a day that deepened our appreciation for Japanese culture and created memories that we will cherish for years to come. As we prepare to leave Zao Onsen, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we have shared and the beauty we have witnessed. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of slowing down, connecting with local cultures, and cherishing the moments we have with our loved ones.
It’s these kinds of days that make traveling so worthwhile, and I can’t wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings.
