Reaching New Heights in Zao Onsen

Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and local culture of Zao Onsen. From exploring museum parks to scaling Mount Zao and indulging in local sake, it was a day packed with unforgettable experiences. Sophie was especially excited, and Lena and I were just as eager to explore.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at KOTOBUKI. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Lena enjoyed a lighter, more Western-style meal. Sophie, of course, went straight for the pastries. Fueled up, we were ready to start our adventure.

First on the agenda was the Zaomiharashinooka Museum Park. The park was a delightful blend of art and nature, with unique sculptures scattered throughout the expansive green spaces. Sophie loved running around, discovering each new piece of art. Lena and I appreciated the tranquility of the walking paths and the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. It was the perfect place to start our day, offering a serene and inspiring atmosphere.

After spending a couple of hours at the museum park, we decided it was time to tackle the main event: Mount Zaō. We took a bus from Zao Onsen to the Zao Ropeway, which would carry us up to the summit. The ride itself was an experience, with breathtaking views of the lush green forests blanketing the mountainside. As we ascended, the temperature dropped, and we were grateful for our light jackets.

At the summit, we were greeted by a landscape that felt both otherworldly and majestic. The air was crisp and clean, and the views were simply stunning. We could see for miles in every direction, with rolling hills and picturesque valleys stretching out before us. Sophie was in awe, pointing out the tiny houses and cars far below.

We spent a good amount of time exploring the summit, taking photos, and simply soaking in the scenery. I was eager to hike to Okama Crater, but Lena reminded me that Sophie might not be up for a long trek. So, we compromised and took a shorter path that still offered incredible views. The trails were well-maintained, but there were a lot of small volcanic rocks, so I was glad we had our comfortable walking shoes.

As we walked, I couldn't help but think about the history of this mountain. Mount Zaō is an active volcano, and its volcanic activity has shaped the landscape in profound ways. The mountain has also been a place of spiritual significance for centuries, with ancient trails once used by Shugendo monks during their ascetic training rituals. It’s amazing to think about all the people who have walked these paths before us, seeking enlightenment or simply connecting with nature.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After our hike, we descended via the Zao Ropeway, which offered a different perspective on the landscape. As we made our way back to Zao Onsen, we were all feeling a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Mount Zaō had challenged us, inspired us, and rewarded us with its unparalleled beauty.

Back in town, we decided to treat ourselves to a late lunch at Shiba Mama no Omise. This charming café is known for its healthy meals made from locally sourced ingredients. I had heard great things about their vegetable curry udon, and it did not disappoint. Lena opted for a salad, while Sophie enjoyed a simple but delicious toast sandwich. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the staff was incredibly friendly. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our mountain adventure.

In the late afternoon, while Sophie took a nap back at Der Barte, I decided to explore the local sake scene. I ventured to Tsumami: Yamagata Sake Museum & Bar, a unique establishment that combines a museum with a bar. I learned about the history and production of sake in the Yamagata region, which is known for its high-quality rice and pristine water. Then, I indulged in a tasting, sampling a variety of different sakes. I discovered that I have a particular fondness for Junmai Ginjo, which has a smooth, refreshing taste with a delicate sweetness.

The bartender was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about sake. He shared stories about the different breweries in the area and offered recommendations based on my preferences. I even got to try a rare sake that had received high praise at competitions. It was a truly immersive experience, and I left with a newfound appreciation for this traditional Japanese beverage.

For dinner, we decided to stay local and try Zaonoie. This charming ramen restaurant is known for its rich culinary heritage and warm atmosphere. I ordered their signature ramen dish, which featured a rich broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and carefully selected toppings. Lena opted for a vegetarian option, while Sophie enjoyed a simpler bowl of noodles. The meal was delicious and satisfying, and it was the perfect way to end a long and eventful day.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can still feel the crisp mountain air on my skin and taste the smooth, refreshing sake on my tongue. Today was a day of exploration, discovery, and connection. We challenged ourselves physically, immersed ourselves in local culture, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Zao Liza World and the Zao Onsen Ski Resort (Central Run). Sophie is especially excited about Zao Liza World, which features various attractions and activities for children. I’m also looking forward to exploring the ski resort, even though it’s not ski season. I hear the views from the top are incredible. We’ll also be having breakfast at Zaonoie, lunch at Izakaya Kiwa, and dinner at Kasheru. And, if we have time, I’m hoping to check out 36SHOP for some local souvenirs.

Until then, kampai!
