Family Adventure and Relaxation at Zao Onsen, Japan
Day 2: Summit Views and Volcanic Wonders: A Day Exploring Zao's Heights
Ascend to breathtaking vistas and explore the volcanic heart of Zao Onsen—a day of stunning scenery and unique experiences awaits.
Reaching for the Sky in Zao Onsen
Today was all about embracing the heights and wonders of Zao Onsen. Lena, Sophie, and I set out to explore the mountain's famous attractions, blending a bit of adventure with the serene beauty that Japan is so well-known for. It was a day of stunning views, surprising discoveries, and, of course, delicious food.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Unite Cafe. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Lena enjoyed a western-style pastry with coffee, and Sophie devoured a bowl of warm rice with some fruit. It's always a win when everyone starts the day with a full belly and a smile. The cafe itself had a cozy, resort-like atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to plan our ascent.

Fueled and ready, we headed towards the Zao Ropeway, our gateway to the mountain's summit. The plan was to reach Jizo Sancho Station and then hike to Okama, the volcanic crater lake. The Zao Ropeway is easily accessible from Zao Onsen Bus Terminal. As we boarded the cable car, Sophie's eyes widened with excitement. The views started unfolding immediately – lush greenery blanketing the mountainside, dotted with quaint little houses. Even in August, there was a refreshing coolness in the air, a welcome change from the humidity we had experienced in Tokyo.
The ascent to Jizo Sancho Station was in two stages, requiring a transfer at Juhyo Kogen Station. At each stage, the views became more dramatic. I couldn't resist snapping photos at every opportunity, trying to capture the essence of the landscape. Lena was equally captivated, pointing out interesting rock formations and patches of wildflowers. Sophie, of course, was most thrilled by the sheer height and the sensation of floating above the trees.
The journey is the destination, especially when that journey takes you to breathtaking heights.
Upon reaching Jizo Sancho Station, we were greeted by a crisp mountain breeze and a panoramic vista that stretched for miles. The station itself is quite charming, with a restaurant and souvenir shop. We took a moment to stretch our legs and admire the Zao Jizoson statue, a guardian figure that watches over the mountain. It's incredible how this statue is almost completely buried in snow during the winter months, a testament to the region's heavy snowfall.

From Jizo Sancho Station, we embarked on a hike to Okama. The trail was well-maintained, but I was glad we had worn our comfortable walking shoes. The hike took us through a landscape that felt both serene and slightly otherworldly. Patches of volcanic rock dotted the path, and the air carried a faint scent of sulfur. Sophie, ever the curious explorer, was fascinated by the different textures and colors of the stones. I tried my best to explain the geological forces at play, drawing on my limited knowledge from old documentaries.
Finally, we reached Okama, and it was truly a sight to behold. The crater lake, nestled between Mount Katta, Mount Goshiki, and Mount Kumano, shimmered with an ethereal green hue. Known as Goshiki Numa, or the Five-Color Lake, its waters change color depending on the sunlight and the fluctuation of water acidity. The sheer scale of the crater, formed by a volcanic eruption in the 1720s, was humbling. We spent a good hour simply taking in the view, marveling at the power and beauty of nature.

After soaking in the views at Okama, we decided to hike a bit further to Kattadake Peak. It was an easy 10-minute trail from Okama Crater to the top of Mount Kattadake. From there, we were able to take in the awesome views of Okama Crater. We also visited the nearby Kattamine Shrine.
For lunch, we descended a bit and found ourselves at Izakaya Kiwa. This cozy spot was a delightful surprise. We were ready for a hearty lunch after our hike, and Izakaya Kiwa did not disappoint. Lena and I shared a delicious Zao beef bowl, while Sophie enjoyed a plate of chicken karaage. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the owner was incredibly friendly, chatting with us about the local area and recommending other places to visit.

With our bellies full, we made our way back down to Zao Onsen, but not before making one more stop. I had heard about Zao Brewery and couldn't resist the chance to sample some local craft beer. Luckily, it was on the way, next to the red Otorii gate. The brewery had a modern, stylish vibe, and the staff was passionate about their craft. I opted for a tasting set, sampling four different beers, each with its unique flavor profile. My favorite was the SNOW MONSTER [WHITE ALE], a refreshing white beer with a hint of citrus. Lena enjoyed a non-alcoholic fruit ale, and Sophie was happy with a juice box and some pretzels. It was a perfect way to wind down after a day of exploring.

Before dinner, we took a relaxing stroll through Zao Onsen town. The town has a charming, old-world feel, with narrow streets, traditional shops, and the constant aroma of sulfur from the hot springs. We popped into a few souvenir shops, picking up small gifts for friends and family back home. Sophie was particularly excited about a little wooden snow monster figurine.
For dinner, we decided on Sushi Kiraku. Despite being in a mountain town, the sushi was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The restaurant was run by an elderly couple, and it felt like dining in someone's home. We ordered a variety of sushi rolls, sashimi, and a comforting miso soup. It was a perfect way to end our day, savoring the flavors of Japan in a cozy, intimate setting.

As we walked back to Der Barte, the stars began to emerge, twinkling against the dark sky. The cool mountain air was refreshing, and the sounds of the town were hushed and peaceful. It was a day of incredible experiences, from the breathtaking views of Okama to the warm hospitality of the local people. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these moments with my family.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Zao Onsen Ski Resort. While it's not ski season, I'm hoping we can still enjoy some of the hiking trails and take in the panoramic views from the ropeway. Sophie is already excited about the prospect of seeing more of the mountains and maybe even spotting some wildlife. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this beautiful corner of Japan.
Zao Onsen continues to surprise and delight us. It's a place where nature, culture, and culinary delights blend seamlessly, creating an unforgettable experience. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
