Solo Adventure in the Huaraz Region
Day 8: Farewell Huaraz: A Fond Look Back and a Promise to Return
Reflecting on my solo journey in Huaraz: From serene plazas to vibrant flavors, a heartfelt goodbye filled with cherished memories.
Adios, Huaraz!
My last day in Huaraz has arrived, marking the end of my solo adventure in this stunning corner of Peru. It's a bittersweet feeling, as I'm eager to return home to Lena and Sophie, but I'm also reluctant to leave behind the breathtaking landscapes and warm hospitality I've experienced here. Today was all about soaking in the last moments, revisiting some favorite spots, and savoring the flavors of Huaraz one last time.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hierba Buena Restaurante. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, fueling up for a day of leisurely exploration. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it the perfect spot to start my day. I remember Lena mentioning how much she'd love the fresh ingredients and unique flavors – definitely adding this to our list for a future family trip! I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes back in Heidelberg, maybe even experiment with a Peruvian-inspired brew at the brewery.

With a full stomach and a sense of purpose, I set out to explore Plazuela de Belén. This charming little square, away from the main tourist drag, offered a glimpse into the daily life of Huaraz locals. I sat on a bench, watching children play, old men chatting, and the world going by at a slower pace. The nearby church added a touch of serenity to the scene, and I found myself reflecting on my journey, the challenges I overcame, and the incredible sights I'd witnessed. It reminded me of the small town squares back in Kamloops, where community spirit thrives and life's simple pleasures are celebrated.

“The journey may end, but the memories last a lifetime.”
Next on my list was Plazuela de la Soledad. This plaza had a different vibe, perhaps a bit more subdued, but equally captivating. I took a stroll around, admiring the architecture and soaking in the atmosphere. I learned that the plaza was undergoing some renovations, with the aim of enhancing its appeal as a tourist attraction. While I appreciate the effort to improve the space, I hope they manage to preserve its authentic charm and character.

Lunchtime found me at Ala qué rico, a restaurant known for its grilled specialties. I indulged in some delicious grilled meats, savoring the local flavors and spices. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the food and company. It was a reminder that food is a universal language, bringing people together from all walks of life. I thought about Sophie, and how she would have loved the grilled chicken. She's such a foodie already!

In the evening, I decided to treat myself to a farewell dinner at Taita. This restaurant came highly recommended, and I was eager to try their traditional Peruvian dishes. I opted for the ceviche de chocho, a local specialty, and it was absolutely divine. The restaurant's decor, filled with historical photographs of the region, added to the ambiance and made for a memorable dining experience. I raised a glass to Huaraz, to the Andes, and to the incredible journey I had undertaken.

Before heading back to Hotel La Joya, I couldn't resist a final nightcap at Kuya Kuya Coctelería Profesional Novoandina. This bar offered a unique experience, with innovative cocktails inspired by local ingredients. I sipped on a Chilcano, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the friendly banter with the bartenders. It was the perfect way to end my last night in Huaraz.

As I packed my bags, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Huaraz had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. From the challenging hikes in the Cordillera Blanca to the warm encounters with the local people, every moment had been special. I'm already looking forward to returning, hopefully with Lena and Sophie in tow, to share the magic of Huaraz with them. Maybe we could even come during one of the local festivals , like the Festival Indie Rock in Huaraz or the 17 ANIVERSARIO BwB, Colegio Jorge Basadre Grohman, to immerse ourselves in the local culture.
Tomorrow, I'll be making my way back to Lima, and then onwards to Frankfurt. The journey home will be long, but I'll be carrying with me a treasure trove of memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. Huaraz, you've captured my heart, and I promise to return!
Until then, adios!
