A Solo Adventure in Chefchaouen: Exploring Morocco's Blue Pearl
Day 8: A Final Day in Tetouan: Art, Parks, and Culinary Delights
Explore Tetouan's artistic side, relax in its parks, and savor Moroccan flavors on the last day of a solo adventure.
Farewell, Morocco!
As my Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant experiences and cultural gems I’ve encountered. Today was all about soaking in the last moments of Tetouan's unique charm before heading back to Germany. While Klaus couldn't join me this time, I know he would have loved wandering through the art centers and parks with me. This final day was a delightful mix of art, nature, and of course, delicious food.
My day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Restaurant Chourafa. I savored the traditional flavors, fueling up for a day of exploration. The restaurant, located on Rue Assaida Alhorra in Chefchaouen, offered a cozy and relaxed atmosphere. The friendly staff made me feel right at home, and I enjoyed a delightful meal before setting off to explore Tetouan.

With a full stomach, I decided to immerse myself in the local art scene. My first stop was the Tetuan Modern Art Center. Housed in a beautifully restored former train station designed by architect Julio Rodriguez Roda in 1918, the building itself is a work of art. Inside, I wandered through five exhibition rooms filled with modern paintings and sculptures. The center showcases the artistic heritage of northern Morocco, highlighting both established and emerging artists. It was fascinating to see the diverse range of contemporary artworks and gain insights into the local culture. The center is a true symbol of the artistic memory shared between Morocco and Spain.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After my artistic interlude, I decided to enjoy the natural beauty of Tetouan at Feddan Park. Known as one of the most beautiful places in Tetouan, Feddan Park is a lush oasis offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the white-washed houses of the city. It's a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, providing a tranquil escape from the bustling city streets. As I strolled through the park, I found myself reflecting on the wonderful experiences I’ve had during my time in Chefchaouen. I found a bench and simply sat, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind and appreciate the beauty of the city.

As the day progressed, my stomach started to rumble, reminding me it was time for lunch. I opted for Restaurant Jbaria, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant is adorned with traditional decor, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. I decided to try the couscous, a Moroccan staple, and it was absolutely delicious. The staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel like a welcomed guest.

With my appetite satisfied, I ventured into Tetouan's old Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I was keen to find the Tetouan's old Medina map to help me navigate the labyrinthine streets and alleys. The Medina is a vibrant hub of culture and history, and I enjoyed wandering through its narrow passages, soaking in the atmosphere. The medina was rebuilt in the 15th century by those fleeing Granada. The maze of streets were full of small shops and hidden corners.

Before dinner, I wanted to find a special souvenir to remind me of my time in Chefchaouen. I headed to B & H Art Shop, hoping to find a unique piece of local art. The shop was filled with colorful ceramics, intricate metalwork, and vibrant textiles. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, perfect for displaying my homegrown herbs back in Heidelberg. It was a lovely reminder of my time in this artistic city.

For my final dinner in Morocco, I chose Café Restaurant Marisco Twins, known for its delightful Moroccan and health-conscious cuisine. Located in the heart of Chefchaouen, this family-friendly restaurant offered a vast menu with vegan and vegetarian options. I savored a flavorful vegetable tagine while enjoying the lively atmosphere of the square. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey in Morocco.

As I packed my bags, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the incredible experiences I've had in Chefchaouen. From the mesmerizing blue streets to the warm hospitality of the locals, this solo adventure has been nothing short of magical. I'm already looking forward to sharing my stories and photographs with Klaus and Olivia. Perhaps we can plan a family trip here next time!
Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Germany. It’s always bittersweet to leave a place that has captured my heart, but I know I’ll carry the memories of Chefchaouen with me always. Until next time, Morocco!
I will miss the blue streets, but I am excited to see Klaus and tell him all about my adventures. It is always nice to return home to Heidelberg.
Before I completely sign off, I wanted to share a German idiom that perfectly captures my feelings about this trip: Alle guten Dinge sind drei – All good things come in threes. This being my third solo trip, it certainly lived up to the saying! Auf Wiedersehen!
