A Dream in Blue

After a long journey from Heidelberg, I finally arrived in Hotel Barcelona, ready to immerse myself in the blue pearl of Morocco. The anticipation had been building for months, and I couldn't wait to wander through the famed blue-washed streets and experience the local culture. As a horticultural consultant and photographer, I was particularly excited to capture the unique beauty of this city, a place that seemed to exist somewhere between reality and a dream.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Clock [i]. Nestled in a cozy corner, the cafe offered a delightful array of Moroccan and Middle Eastern dishes. I opted for the Berber eggs, a flavorful mix of tomatoes, herbs, and local cheese. Sipping on strong, sweet mint tea, I planned my day, eager to explore the Medina, Plaza Uta el Hamman, and the Kasbah. It felt good to finally put my German idioms to rest, and start absorbing some local culture. It's always a thrill to learn about a new place, and I was ready to dive in headfirst.

Stepping out of the cafe, I was immediately enveloped in the mesmerizing blue of Chefchaouen's Medina. The narrow, winding streets were a labyrinth of azure hues, with every building, doorway, and alleyway painted in a different shade of blue. It was as though I had stepped into a painting, a surreal and captivating experience that I knew I would never forget. I took my time, camera in hand, capturing the intricate details of the architecture, the vibrant colors of the shops, and the smiling faces of the locals.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its color, but in the way it embraces you, inviting you to lose yourself in its tranquil embrace.

My wanderings led me to Plaza Uta el Hamman, the heart of Chefchaouen's Medina. This bustling square is surrounded by historic buildings, cafes, and shops, creating a vibrant atmosphere where tourists and locals mingle. I paused to admire the Great Mosque with its unique octagonal minaret and the imposing Kasbah, a fortress built in the 15th century. The square was alive with activity, people chatting, children playing, and the aroma of spices wafting from nearby restaurants. I found a spot at a local cafe and ordered a refreshing orange juice, watching the world go by. It was the perfect place to soak in the energy of the city and appreciate the beauty of my surroundings.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Bab Ssour, recommended by several locals for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was tucked away in a small alley, its entrance unassuming but inviting. I ordered a tagine with kefta (meatballs), a flavorful dish slow-cooked in a traditional clay pot with tomatoes, spices, and herbs. It was absolutely delicious, a true taste of Morocco that left me feeling satisfied and content. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home.

After lunch, I decided to explore the Kasbah, a historic fortress that stands as a testament to Chefchaouen's rich past. Built in the 15th century by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid, the Kasbah served as a defense against Portuguese invaders and later as a residence for governors and a military arsenal. Today, it houses an Ethnographic Museum, a beautiful Andalusian garden, and offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Rif Mountains.

Wandering through the Kasbah, I was transported back in time, imagining life within its walls centuries ago. The Ethnographic Museum showcased a fascinating collection of artifacts, including musical instruments, weapons, and traditional costumes, providing insights into the local culture and history. The Andalusian garden was a peaceful oasis, a tranquil space filled with lush greenery, fountains, and flowers. Climbing to the top of the Kasbah, I was rewarded with breathtaking views of Chefchaouen, its blue-washed buildings cascading down the hillside, framed by the rugged peaks of the Rif Mountains.

In the late afternoon, I indulged in some retail therapy at Blue. concept store. This charming boutique offered a curated selection of locally made handicrafts, including jewelry, textiles, and home decor items. I purchased a beautiful hand-woven scarf as a souvenir, a reminder of my time in this enchanting city. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was happy to find such unique and beautiful items.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Restaurant Al Wiam for dinner. Located near Plaza Uta el Hamman, this restaurant offered a delightful menu of traditional Moroccan dishes. I chose the Moroccan chicken, a flavorful dish cooked with spices and served with couscous. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were attentive and friendly. Dining al fresco, I enjoyed the cool evening breeze and the twinkling lights of the city. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on my first day in Chefchaouen, I was filled with a sense of wonder and gratitude. This city had exceeded all my expectations, captivating me with its beauty, its culture, and its warm hospitality. I'm so glad I remembered to pack my comfortable walking shoes, they definitely came in handy today! As I walked back to Hotel Barcelona, I couldn't help but feel excited about what tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Ras El Ma, Darb Limoun, and the City View Point. I'm also looking forward to trying out Chez Aziz for breakfast and Mandala for dinner. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of blue streets and Moroccan adventures.

Chefchaouen is a place that stays with you, long after you've left. It's a reminder that there are still places in the world that can surprise and enchant, that can transport you to another time and place. I can't wait to see what the rest of my journey holds.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Ras El Ma, Darb Limoun and the City View Point. I'm also looking forward to trying out Chez Aziz for breakfast and Mandala for dinner. I might even visit Bar Oum Rabie for a nightcap. Until then, goodnight from Chefchaouen!

It's nights like these that make me so grateful for my adventurous spirit. I encourage everyone to embrace their wanderlust and explore the world, one blue city at a time.
