A Solo Adventure in Chefchaouen: Exploring Morocco's Blue Pearl
Day 6: Stepping Back in Time: Discovering Chefchaouen's Historical Heart
Explore the rich history of Chefchaouen with visits to the Kasbah and Bab Chaouen, savoring local flavors and sunset views.
A Day Immersed in History and Flavors
Today was all about delving into Chefchaouen's historical roots and savoring its unique culinary offerings. From exploring ancient fortresses to enjoying a stunning sunset with a refreshing drink, every moment felt like a step back in time. It's days like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace and truly immerse myself in the local culture.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Chez Foad. After a restful night at Hotel Barcelona, I was eager to start exploring, and Chez Foad, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine, seemed like the perfect place to fuel up. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea and local pastries. I made a mental note to try making the pastries when I got home to Heidelberg, perhaps Klaus would enjoy a taste of Morocco. It was a great way to start the day, surrounded by locals and the aroma of freshly baked bread.

With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I set off to explore the Kasbah. This historic fortress, built in the 15th century, was originally constructed to defend the city against Portuguese invasions. As I wandered through its walls and towers, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like centuries ago. The Kasbah now houses an ethnographic museum, which I found fascinating. The museum showcases a range of Moroccan artifacts, including traditional musical instruments, pottery, and weapons. I was particularly drawn to the displays of traditional clothing, admiring the intricate embroidery and vibrant colors. As a photographer, I was captivated by the play of light and shadow within the Kasbah's architecture, capturing numerous images that I knew would become cherished memories of my solo adventure. The entry fee was 60 MAD, which I thought was a bit steep, but the experience was worth it.

Next on my list was Bab Chaouen. This iconic gate is one of the main entrances to the old city and a significant landmark in Chefchaouen. As I approached Bab Chaouen, I was struck by its intricate design and the vibrant blue hues that surrounded it. I took some time to simply sit and observe the locals going about their daily lives, soaking in the authentic atmosphere of this enchanting city. It was a perfect spot for people-watching, and I enjoyed seeing families, children playing, and vendors selling their wares.

For lunch, I decided to try Restaurant Triana. This restaurant is known for its Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, offering a delightful change of pace from the traditional Moroccan dishes I had been enjoying. I opted for a seafood salad, which was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The service was excellent, and the prices were reasonable. The atmosphere was lively, with live music adding to the overall charm. As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a diverse range of culinary delights in one small city. Klaus would have loved this place; I know he would have enjoyed the octopus.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are made when you wander without a specific destination, allowing the journey to unfold organically.
In the late afternoon, I returned to the Kasbah for a second look, wanting to capture the light at a different time of day. I found myself drawn to the seasonal art exhibitions housed in a gallery near one of the towers. The art was contemporary, yet it reflected the spirit and tradition of Morocco. It was inspiring to see how local artists were interpreting their heritage in new and innovative ways. I purchased a small painting as a memento of my visit, a piece that I knew would remind me of Chefchaouen's unique blend of history and creativity. I made sure to have a chat with the artist, asking about his inspiration and techniques. It's these personal connections that make travel so rewarding. As a horticultural consultant, I often find myself inspired by the colors and textures of nature, and the art I encountered in the Kasbah was no exception.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Sunset at Sunset, a bar known for its captivating views. I arrived early to secure a good seat and ordered a refreshing cocktail. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. Hues of orange, pink, and purple painted the landscape, creating a breathtaking spectacle. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and reflection. I struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler from France, and we shared stories of our adventures and our love for Morocco. We talked about the International Festival of Environmental Films of Chefchaouen, which will be held later in June. The atmosphere at Sunset at Sunset was relaxed and inviting, making it easy to connect with others and simply enjoy the moment.

For dinner, I decided to indulge in a final Moroccan feast at Restaurant Dar El Salam. This restaurant is known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine and its elegant ambiance. I ordered a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and savored every bite. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the skill and artistry of Moroccan cooking. The staff was attentive and friendly, making me feel welcome and valued. As I finished my meal, I reflected on the day's experiences and felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore Chefchaouen. The Staff was great and the food was good.

Before heading back to Hotel Barcelona, I took one last stroll through the medina, soaking in the sights and sounds of the city at night. The blue-washed streets took on a different character under the moonlight, creating a magical and enchanting atmosphere. I paused to listen to the sounds of local musicians playing traditional Moroccan music, their melodies filling the air with a sense of joy and celebration. I couldn't help but smile, feeling a sense of contentment and fulfillment.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Chefchaouen's hidden gems, including Rue Ibn Asskar and El Mellah. I also hope to venture into the Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve, eager to experience the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. And of course, I'm looking forward to trying more of the local cuisine, with breakfast at Restaurant Populaire and lunch at Restaurant Blue Dream. I might even do some shopping at Bazar Sahara.
As I prepare for my final day in Chefchaouen, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement. This solo adventure has been everything I hoped for and more, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings. I'm so glad I didn't forget my camera, as I'll want to take lots of photos. I really wish I had brought my travel guidebook, though.
Chefchaouen has a certain charm about it that reminds me of my childhood home in Whanganui. The people here are so kind and welcoming. I'm looking forward to sharing all of my photos with Klaus and Olivia when I return to Heidelberg. I know they'll both be eager to hear about my adventures in the Blue Pearl of Morocco. I think I'll start learning some German idioms to spice up my next blog post.
