A Day Amongst Giants
Today was a day of delving deep into the geological heart of Gros Morne, a journey that took us from interactive exhibits to an otherworldly landscape. It’s amazing how a day can be filled with so much learning and awe, leaving us with a profound appreciation for the forces that have shaped our planet. From the moment we stepped out, the crisp Newfoundland air invigorated us, setting the stage for a day of exploration and discovery.

Our day began with a visit to the Discovery Centre. This place is a treasure trove of information, and it’s the perfect starting point for anyone wanting to understand the geological significance of Gros Morne. The interactive exhibits are incredibly well-done, bringing the story of the park's formation to life. We spent a good couple of hours here, immersing ourselves in the displays about the park’s geology and indigenous culture. Klaus was particularly fascinated by the exhibit on the Tablelands, which, as we would soon see, is a truly remarkable place.

Leaving the Discovery Centre, we set off for the Tablelands Trail. The drive itself was stunning, with the landscape transforming dramatically as we approached the Tablelands. This area is like nowhere else on Earth; it feels like stepping onto another planet. The ochre-colored earth, devoid of the lush vegetation we’d seen elsewhere in the park, is stark and beautiful.

The Tablelands are, in fact, part of the Earth’s mantle, pushed to the surface by colliding continents millions of years ago. The rock is rich in iron and magnesium, but lacks the nutrients necessary to support most plant life, hence the unique landscape. As a horticultural consultant, I found this particularly intriguing. It’s a testament to the resilience of nature that anything can grow here at all.

We took the 4-kilometer Tablelands Trail, which is an easy walk that skirts the base of the mountain. Even in late November, the trail was accessible, though we were bundled up in our warmest gear. The wind was biting, but the views were more than worth it. Klaus, ever the architect, was captivated by the sheer scale and unique geological formations of the area. He kept remarking on the textures and colors, already envisioning how he might incorporate some of these elements into his designs.

As we walked, we noticed the unusual plants that have adapted to this harsh environment. These hardy species, like the serpentine barrens plants, are a testament to nature's ability to find a way, even in the most challenging conditions. I made a mental note to research these plants further; they could offer valuable insights for sustainable gardening practices back in Heidelberg.

Sometimes, the most extraordinary experiences come from simply being present in nature and letting its wonders unfold around you.

After our hike, we were both feeling quite peckish. We decided to head to Trout River for a late lunch at the Seaside Restaurant. The restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and stunning ocean views. It’s located right on the beachfront, offering spectacular sunsets, though we were a bit early to witness one.

The Seaside Restaurant was a delightful experience. We shared a plate of freshly caught cod, prepared in a traditional Newfoundland style. The fish was flaky and moist, and the batter was light and crispy. Klaus, who is usually quite particular about his seafood, declared it one of the best fish dishes he’d ever had. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were friendly and attentive.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to explore Woody Point. This historic town is nestled on the shores of Bonne Bay, surrounded by stunning scenery. We wandered through the charming streets, admiring the colorful houses and the quaint shops. Woody Point has a vibrant arts scene, and we popped into a few galleries to admire the local talent.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at the Merchant Warehouse Retro Cafe & Wine Bar. This place is a real gem, combining culture, nature, and pub & grub dining in a beautifully restored historic warehouse. The warehouse sits right over the water, offering unobstructed views of Bonne Bay.

The Merchant Warehouse has a retro vibe, with vintage décor and a relaxed atmosphere. We ordered a couple of glasses of local craft beer and settled in to enjoy the view. There was live music playing, a local band strumming traditional Newfoundland tunes. The music, the view, and the beer created a perfect end to a perfect day.

We chatted with some of the locals, who were incredibly friendly and welcoming. They shared stories about the town’s history and the surrounding area, giving us a deeper appreciation for this special place. It’s these interactions that make traveling so rewarding, connecting with people and learning about their lives and experiences.

Before heading back to our cabin, we made a quick stop at Earle's Restaurant in Rocky Harbour. Although we were still full from our late lunch, we couldn't resist trying their famous blueberry pie. The pie was warm and comforting, a perfect treat for a chilly evening.

As we drove back, the stars began to appear, twinkling in the clear night sky. We reflected on the day’s adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Gros Morne. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Bonne Bay Marine Station and Woody Point Lighthouse, continuing our exploration of this beautiful park. I’m particularly excited about the marine station, as I’ve always been fascinated by marine biology. And Klaus is looking forward to photographing the lighthouse, which I’m sure will provide some stunning shots.

But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of discovery. Gros Morne continues to surprise and delight us at every turn, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

I must remember to charge my portable phone charger tonight, as I forgot to pack it. I also regret not bringing a first aid kit, but I will buy one tomorrow in Treasure Box in Woody Point. I also read about the Gros Morne Hiking Festival, and I'm sad we missed it. Maybe next year we can come in early September to participate!

Back at our cozy cabin, Klaus and I sipped herbal tea, recounting our favorite moments from the day. It’s evenings like these that make our travels so special – sharing experiences and creating lasting memories in the heart of nature.

Gute Nacht from Newfoundland!

P.S. I overheard some locals talking about the Gros Morne Fall Fest, which features local crafts, food, and music, all set against the stunning autumn backdrop of Gros Morne. It takes place in September in Cow Head, and I wish we were here for it!
