Exploring the Majestic Dades Valley with Friends
Day 9: Hiking Through History and Nature's Masterpieces in Dades Valley
Michelle and friends explore the stunning Dadès Gorges, hiking through breathtaking landscapes and savoring authentic Moroccan cuisine.
A Day of Exploration in the Dades Gorge
Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the raw beauty and rich culture of the Dades Valley. The dramatic landscapes, combined with the warmth of the local people, made for an unforgettable experience. I’m excited to share the highlights of our day, from our invigorating hike to the delicious Moroccan meals we enjoyed.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant zinyou sud. The simple, yet delicious, spread of local bread, honey, and strong Moroccan coffee was the perfect way to fuel up for our morning adventure. The café had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home. It’s amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day, and today, it certainly did.
With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off for our main activity of the day: a hike through the Dadès Gorges. The Randonnee Vallee Dades au Maroc promised stunning views and a chance to connect with nature, and it did not disappoint. As we started our trek, the sheer scale of the gorge was awe-inspiring. The towering rock formations, sculpted by centuries of wind and water, created a landscape that felt both ancient and timeless.

The trail wound its way through the gorge, offering breathtaking vistas at every turn. The autumn sun cast long shadows, highlighting the intricate details of the rock faces. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of dry earth and wild herbs. I couldn't resist stopping every few minutes to snap photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the scenery. It felt like being in a natural cathedral, a place of peace and reverence.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet whispers of nature and the simple connections we make along the way.As we hiked, we encountered a few local Berber people tending to their gardens and livestock. Their warm smiles and friendly greetings added another layer of richness to our experience. It struck me how seamlessly they coexisted with this rugged landscape, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of nature. I even tried out a few German idioms on them, much to the amusement of my friends. I think they appreciated the effort, even if my pronunciation left something to be desired.
After a few hours of hiking, we worked up quite an appetite. Luckily, our lunch spot, Maison isabel on the rocks, was perfectly situated along our route. This charming restaurant offered stunning views of the gorge, and their menu featured traditional Moroccan dishes with a modern twist. I opted for a tagine with chicken and preserved lemons, while Klaus chose the Berber omelet. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and the fresh ingredients made all the difference. We savored every bite, enjoying the peaceful ambiance and the company of our friends.

After lunch, we continued our exploration of the Dadès Gorges, driving along the winding roads that snaked through the valley. We stopped at several viewpoints to take in the panoramic vistas, each one more stunning than the last. The fingers of monkeys rock formation was particularly impressive, a testament to the power of natural erosion. It's incredible to think that these formations were shaped over millions of years, a reminder of the Earth's immense history.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a refreshing drink at Café-restaurant Timzzillite Chez Mohamed. This quirky café is perched on a cliff overlooking the gorge, offering unparalleled views of the hairpin turns below. Sipping on mint tea while gazing at the landscape, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. The café itself was a delightful surprise, offering a unique vantage point and a chance to relax before continuing our adventure.

For dinner, we chose La famille kasbah, a restaurant known for its authentic Berber cuisine and warm hospitality. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional Moroccan decor and a lively atmosphere. We started with a selection of mezze, including hummus, baba ghanoush, and olives, followed by a hearty couscous dish with vegetables and lamb. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It felt like being invited into someone's home for a family meal.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our experiences. The Dadès Gorges had exceeded all our expectations, offering a blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality. I was particularly struck by the resilience and resourcefulness of the Berber people, who have thrived in this challenging environment for centuries. Their traditions and way of life are a testament to the human spirit.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Gorge Miguirne and Canyon des doigts de singe. I’m particularly excited to see the unique rock formations and learn more about the geological history of the area. We’ll also be stopping at a local shop, BELLE VUE DADES, to pick up some souvenirs and support the local economy.
I am also reminded that I forgot my portable charger at the hotel in Marrakech. A rookie mistake, but I will need to buy one tomorrow. I also wish I had brought a warmer jacket, as the evenings are getting quite cool.
Before heading back to our guesthouse, we made one last stop at Café-restaurant Timzzillite Chez Mohamed for an evening drink. The atmosphere was even more magical under the starlit sky, with the sounds of Berber music filling the air. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
As I write this, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. The Dadès Valley has captured my heart, and I know that this is an experience I will cherish forever. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings, as we continue our exploration of this incredible region. I think I will try to learn a new German idiom to impress the locals tomorrow!
I’m so glad I decided to come to Morocco with my friends. It’s always special to share these experiences with people you care about, and their laughter and companionship have made this trip even more memorable. I can’t wait to see what adventures await us tomorrow.
I think Klaus is enjoying himself as well. He has been taking lots of photos, and I know he will be excited to share them with Olivia when we get back to Heidelberg. It’s always nice to have a piece of our travels to bring back home with us.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I’m reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, the famous Moroccan explorer:
Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
And that’s exactly what I hope to do – to share the stories of my travels and inspire others to explore the world with open hearts and minds. Goodnight from the Dadès Valley!
