Exploring the Artistic Treasures of Florence with Friends
Day 9: A Florentine Finale: Art, Churches, and Leather Goods in Oltrarno
Exploring the artistic heart of Florence one last time, from the Palatine Gallery to the leather workshops of Oltrarno.
Last Day in Florence: A Whirlwind of Art and Authentic Finds
As our Florentine adventure draws to a close, I wanted to soak up every last drop of this city's artistic and cultural essence. Today was all about delving deeper into the Oltrarno district, a treasure trove of art, history, and artisan crafts. With Fatima and the kids back home in Bielefeld, I felt a pang of longing, but also a surge of excitement to bring back stories and maybe a few souvenirs from this last day. I was also excited to see what treasures I could find today, and to share them with you all!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Gatto e la Volpe | Florence. Energized, I set off to explore the artistic wonders of the Palatine Gallery.
Palatine Gallery: A Feast for the Eyes
The Palatine Gallery, housed within the Pitti Palace, is an experience that overwhelms the senses in the best possible way. Unlike the Uffizi, which meticulously organizes art chronologically, the Palatine Gallery embraces a more opulent, almost chaotic display. The Medici family's personal taste and lavish lifestyle are palpable here. Imagine room after room adorned with intricate frescoes, ornate stuccowork, and then, amidst this splendor, masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, and Rubens. It's as if you've stepped into a Baroque dream.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
What struck me most was the sheer density of art. Every wall was covered, every corner occupied by a painting vying for attention. The gallery's layout feels more like a private collection than a public museum, which is precisely its charm. I found myself lingering in the Sala di Giove, captivated by the monumental works of Rubens, his figures practically leaping off the canvas with their vibrant energy. The Caravaggio's were also a highlight, the dramatic use of light and shadow drawing me into their intense narratives. I could have spent hours just in that one room, but there was so much more to see.
Leaving the Pitti Palace, I strolled towards the Basilica di Santo Spirito, eager to experience a different facet of Florentine artistry. Along the way, I couldn't help but admire the architecture of the Pitti Palace. Its massive facade, with its irregular stones, is a unique and imposing sight.
Basilica di Santo Spirito: Brunelleschi's Vision
The Basilica di Santo Spirito presents a stark contrast to the opulent Palatine Gallery. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, the architect behind the Duomo's iconic dome, Santo Spirito embodies Renaissance ideals of harmony and proportion. Its unassuming facade belies the serene beauty within.

Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the basilica's sense of calm. The interior is bathed in soft light, illuminating the clean lines and balanced spaces that define Brunelleschi's style. Unlike many Florentine churches, Santo Spirito feels almost understated, allowing the architecture itself to take center stage. The story of the basilica is as compelling as its design. Built on the site of a 13th-century Augustinian convent, Santo Spirito represents a departure from Gothic traditions, embracing a new vision of space and light. Brunelleschi's death early in the project led to modifications, but the basilica still stands as a testament to his genius. I learned that Michelangelo himself contributed a wooden crucifix to the church, a piece I was eager to find.
The basilica's 38 side chapels each offer a unique artistic experience, showcasing works from various periods. I was particularly drawn to the Nerli Chapel, which houses Filippino Lippi's altarpiece, a beautiful Madonna and Child with Saints. After exploring the chapels, I ventured into the sacristy, designed by Giuliano da Sangallo. Here, I found the famed wooden Crucifix attributed to Michelangelo. Carved when he was just 17, the crucifix is a remarkable display of anatomical detail, a testament to Michelangelo's dedication to understanding the human form. The story goes that Michelangelo was allowed to study corpses from the convent hospital, giving him unparalleled insight into anatomy. The basilica's connection to the Augustinian order is also significant. The Augustinians arrived in Florence in the 13th century, establishing a center for theological and philosophical studies. Santo Spirito became a hub of intellectual and cultural exchange, hosting luminaries like Leonardo Bruni and Poggio Bracciolini. The basilica's history is intertwined with Florence's own evolution, reflecting the city's embrace of Renaissance ideals and its commitment to artistic innovation.
Piazza Santo Spirito: A Breath of Fresh Air
Exiting the basilica, I found myself in Piazza Santo Spirito, a vibrant square that embodies the Oltrarno's local spirit. The square has a rich history, serving as a gathering place for prayers, demonstrations, and festivals since the Middle Ages. Today, it's a lively hub filled with artisan shops, restaurants, and bars. The atmosphere was buzzing with activity. Locals chatted over coffee, children played near the central fountain, and tourists soaked up the Florentine ambiance. I took a moment to simply observe, appreciating the unscripted theater of daily life. I learned that the piazza hosts various events throughout the year, including a handicraft market on the second Sunday of each month and an organic market on the third Sunday. I imagined Fatima would have loved to explore the organic market, selecting fresh ingredients for a Libyan feast. There wasn't any event today, but the square was still full of life.

For lunch, I decided to try Cantinetta delle Terme, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Florentine cuisine. I wasn't disappointed. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the menu featured a range of traditional dishes. I opted for the *pappardelle al ragu di cinghiale* (wide noodles with wild boar sauce), a hearty and flavorful choice that perfectly captured the essence of Tuscan cooking. I savored each bite, reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had in Florence.

Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique: A Touch of Florentine Craftsmanship
No trip to Florence is complete without indulging in some leather shopping. After lunch, I made my way to Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique, a shop known for its high-quality, handcrafted goods. I wanted to find a special souvenir, something that would remind me of this trip and perhaps serve as a gift for Fatima. The boutique was a treasure trove of leather jackets, bags, belts, and wallets. The aroma of genuine leather filled the air, a testament to the craftsmanship within. I spent a considerable amount of time browsing, admiring the intricate details and the supple textures of the leather. The staff was helpful and attentive, offering insights into the different types of leather and the construction techniques used. I finally settled on a beautiful leather handbag for Fatima, a classic design with a modern twist. I knew she would appreciate its quality and timeless style.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to a memorable dinner at Il Palagio, a Michelin-starred restaurant nestled within the Four Seasons Hotel Florence. The setting was elegant and refined, and the service was impeccable. The menu featured contemporary dishes that showcased the best of Tuscan ingredients. I opted for the tasting menu, a culinary journey that delighted my senses. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The *risotto with tomatoes and pecorino di grotta* was a particular highlight, a simple yet exquisite dish that perfectly balanced acidity and richness. It was the perfect way to celebrate my last night in Florence.
