A Warm Welcome to San Cristobal

After a long journey from Toronto, with a stopover in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, we finally arrived in San Cristobal de las Casas. The drive was scenic, offering glimpses of the stunning Chiapas landscapes, but nothing could have prepared us for the charm of this colonial city. Aisha, Zayn, and I were all eager to stretch our legs and dive into our family adventure.

Our first day in San Cristobal was nothing short of magical. Even though I had forgotten our travel adapter and sunglasses, the city's vibrant atmosphere quickly made me forget my packing mishaps. The cool mountain air was a welcome change from Toronto's late spring warmth. San Cristobal, nestled in the highlands of Chiapas, immediately captivated us with its colorful architecture and bustling streets.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

Exploring the Zócalo

The Zócalo, also known as Plaza 31 de Marzo, is the main square and the perfect starting point for any visit to San Cristobal. The square was alive with activity; locals and tourists mingled, street vendors offered their wares, and the air was filled with the sounds of marimba music. Zayn was immediately drawn to the central bandstand, imagining himself conducting the musicians. Aisha and I enjoyed watching him, soaking in the lively atmosphere. We found a bench under a leafy tree and simply enjoyed the people-watching, a perfect way to start our immersion into the local culture.

The square often hosts cultural events, live music performances, and traditional dance showcases, providing a glimpse into the vibrant local culture. While we were there, we saw a group of local dancers performing a traditional Chiapanecan dance. The colorful costumes and energetic movements were mesmerizing, and Zayn was captivated.

Just a stone's throw from the Zócalo stands the Catedral de San Cristóbal de las Casas, a striking yellow and white building that dominates the city skyline. Built in 1528, the cathedral is one of the most historically significant structures in the city. Its architecture is a blend of Baroque, Moorish, and indigenous influences, reflecting the complex history of the region.

Inside, the cathedral was serene and awe-inspiring. The main altar, dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption and San Cristóbal Mártir, was stunning. The intricate details and gold leaf accents were breathtaking. We lit a candle and took a moment for quiet reflection, appreciating the spiritual significance of this place.

Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, the first bishop of the diocese and a fervent defender of the indigenous people, once presided here. Knowing his history added a layer of depth to our visit. The cathedral has undergone several modifications since its construction in the 16th century, with its current façade dating back to the 18th century.

After visiting the cathedral, we took a leisurely walk down Andador Eclesiástico De San Cristóbal, a charming pedestrian street lined with shops, cafes, and historical buildings. The street was bustling with activity, and we enjoyed browsing the various shops, each offering unique local crafts and souvenirs.

The vibrant atmosphere of Andador Eclesiástico was infectious. Street performers entertained passersby, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted from the cafes. Zayn was particularly fascinated by a street artist creating intricate sand paintings.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at El Secreto, a charming spot known for its handmade dishes. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made us feel right at home. I ordered huevos rancheros, while Aisha opted for a traditional Chiapanecan breakfast. Zayn, of course, chose pancakes. The food was delicious, and it was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploring.

For lunch, we ventured to BELIL SABORES DE CHIAPAS, enticed by its promise of authentic regional flavors. The restaurant did not disappoint. We sampled a variety of Chiapanecan dishes, including sopa de chipilín and tasajo. The rich, complex flavors were a testament to the region's culinary heritage. Zayn, surprisingly, enjoyed the sopa de chipilín, a traditional soup made with chipilín leaves. Aisha and I were thrilled that he was embracing the local cuisine.

As evening approached, we made our way to Tierra y Cielo Restaurante for dinner, a place recommended for its haute cuisine and regional specialties. The restaurant's ambiance was elegant yet inviting, and the menu was a celebration of Chiapas' culinary diversity. We savored every bite, from the appetizers to the desserts. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

No trip to San Cristobal is complete without exploring its artisan markets. We visited Artesanías Kuxul de Chiapas, a shop known for its beautiful handcrafted clothing and textiles. The vibrant colors and intricate designs were captivating. We purchased a few items, including a hand-embroidered blouse for Aisha and a small toy for Zayn. I was particularly impressed by the shop's commitment to supporting local artisans and preserving traditional techniques.

As we browsed, I learned that Artesanías Kuxul de Chiapas is more than just a shop; it's a social enterprise that empowers women in the region by providing them with sustainable livelihoods. Knowing that our purchases were making a positive impact made the experience even more meaningful.

Looking Ahead

As the day drew to a close, we strolled back to Hotel Helvérica, our hearts full of the day's experiences. San Cristobal had welcomed us with open arms, and we were already eager to see what tomorrow would bring. We're planning to visit the Museo del Ámbar, Museo Mesoamericano del Jade, and Museo de Culturas Populares de Chiapas [see Itinerary of Tomorrow]. And perhaps, if Zayn is up for it, we'll check out the Clover Irish Pub for a bit of evening fun [see Itinerary of Tomorrow].

Our first day in San Cristobal de las Casas was a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. It was a reminder of why we love to travel as a family: to experience new things, learn about different cultures, and create lasting memories. I am already looking forward to sharing more stories as our adventure continues. Good night from San Cristobal!
